Nelson, Willie - Me And Paul Lyrics

It's been rough and rocky travelin',
But I'm finally standing upright on the ground.
And after takin' several readings,
I'm surprised to find my mind's still fairly sound.
I thought Nashville was the roughest,
But I know I said the same about them all.
We received our education
In the cities of the nation, me and Paul.

Almost busted in Laredo,
But for reasons that I'd rather not disclose,
But if you're stayin' in a motel there and leave,
Just don't leave nothin' in your clothes.
And at the airport in Milwaukee,
They refused to let us board the plane at all,
They said we looked suspicious,
But I believe they like to pick on me and Paul.

And on a package show in Buffalo
With us and Kitty Wells and Charlie Pride.
The show was long and we was just sittin' there
And we'd come to play and not just for the ride.
And we drank a lot of whiskey,
So I don't know if we went on that night at all.
But I don't think they even missed us
I guess Buffalo ain't geared for me and Paul.

It's been rough and rocky traveling
But I'm finally standin' upright on the ground.
And after takin' several readings,
I'm surprised to find my mind's still fairly sound.
I thought Nashville was the roughest,
But I know I said the same about them all.
We received our education
In the cities of the nation, me and Paul.

  4. A.... M....

I have a brother named Paul .... I love this song, changed up the lyrics to sing it as a kind of revenge song against the prep schools we attended that will remain nameless, but I sent them a video of me singing my version ... "we got our prep school education in the worst schools in the nation, me and Paul" ... :)

    A.... M....

Ann Matranga God bless You an Paul 👍

  5. T.... S....

Bought this album in the "cut out" secion at a record store in Lubbock TX probably 72 ... Paul was his drummer, I believe.

Any drummer that could keep time with Willie leading needs an award.

    M.... T....

    Keeps them on their toes.

  7. R.... P....

Interesting fact. "Paul" was what he named his butt plug

    R.... P....

Is that what he told you?

    R.... P....

  9. H.... R....

    H.... R....

WTF is wrong with asshats like you? If you don't like the song, just move on, but don't disrespect a national treasure like Willie!

  10. C.... T....

I am/was a solid Jazz fan. Willie and Ken Burns have changed that, Thanks to BOTH of you!!!

  11. J.... D....

Willie was still had a bit traditional country in this song. Things were about to change and change a lot as Willie fronted the new country outlaw sound.

  12. C.... T....

    just great music!!!

  13. S.... ....

    Mercy...

  14. t.... c....

116 people felt like they needed to thumbs down, Im wondering if ts these same dumb asses that go from video to vid doing this, is it some kind of attention needy thing?

  24. P.... W....

Anyone know what "taking several readings" means? I used to hear it as "taking several beatings..."

    P.... W....

@Patrick Weston: Measuring or checking multiple times.

(If you're asking how he's using it metaphorically in a more euphemistic way, I'd have to guess.)

  25. N.... H....

Thank u WILLIE ,for written and singing we all luv u

  26. H.... ....

    What A Song!........Good Going Willie!........Just Beautiful!

  27. l.... ....

I just watched the country music special on PBS. It brought me here! I am not really a country music. But I’m a big Wille Nelson fan.

    l.... ....

I've also just finished watching the episode of this fine series that closes with this classic being played in the credits. The lyrics take on extra meaning for me now hearing some of the stories during Mr. Nelson's run in Nashville. I didn't know that Willie put out 14 albums during his time there before heading home to Texas. And those early days of driving from one gig in Connecticut to the next one in California- whew! That jazzy, behind the beat phrasing of his might have waited patiently for 15 years or so for the world to catch up, but for the true music listeners- it been worth it! The images this great song paints in your mind is something else indeed.

    l.... ....

Same here. I'm a native Californian who finds herself living just outside of Nashville late in life and it's a culture shock. Not a huge country fan, especially not today's country but how can you not love Willie? Ken Burns knocked it out of the park!

  28. T.... O....
