went to a public theater in ojai a few years back to see "heart of gold." almost the whole time i was so emotional i couldn't contain myself. tried to control my tears because didn't want to make a spectacle of myself or distract from the fine show but it was very hard.  neil just gets to me sometimes and i love it.  but i'd rather not have people hear or see me cry. would rather play some of his songs and make them cry.

Absolutely love this song, on the Decade album its followed (preceded?) by Deep Forbidden Lake and the combo just knocks me flat everytime all these years later.

Yes, the combo was magic. I had the two songs recorded towards the end of a cassette tape and DFL (came after Winterlong) ran out at the very end, always followed by a mad rush to flip it out and switch it over and push the play button and get back to the last notes... To listen to Young's multi-layered music, in which his guitar perfectly matches and amplifies the emotions of his lyrics, you have to be lying still and at peace somewhere. It goes head to toe.

i feel exactly the same. most people hear the same 3 songs over and over and yet his catalog is so rich and with so much depth. anyone who can say he's a superficial songwriter is a complete idiot -- and from my conversations with people about Neil Young, I find there are many complete idiots.

First listen of the studio version. Only familiar with the stellar Fillmore East version. Couple of interesting touches with the pedal steel and Neil harmonizing with himself on the melody.

Great song deserving of all the acclaim it can muster and then some.

Only Neil Young could have written this song.
