Neil Young could be like long haired hippy layabout who says ''Man'' at the end of every sentence and has done all these songs with acoustic guitars droning on about Cortez The Killer etc etc.
Then he decides to start a side project. Normally artists who've been around so long explore the Great American Songbook or dress up like Sinatra or start working with Mary J Bilge or even do some Opera.
Neil Young: He forms a punk rock group.

Nice narrative but inaccurate. He formed Crazy Horse long before punk rock (they released their first album in 1969) and they could hardly be called a side project. They are 'his' band. As well as his solo albums he occasionally performs or records with bands other than Crazy Horse. THEY are 'side projects'. Cortez the Killer is not an acoustic song. In fact it was recorded with the same 'punk' band (as you call them) you see here: Crazy Horse, and is a regular part of their repertoire. Neil Young has done plenty of exploration of 'the great American songbook': covers of Springsteen, Dylan, Hendrix, whole albums of 'traditional' folk songs and covers, including with his (again, as you put it) 'punk band', Crazy Horse (I recommend you listen to their wonderful 'Americana' album). Opera, you are right about though: Neil was born to rock, he will never be an opera star.
