Reading all these comments overwhelms me, I hope all of you who have lost someone can find peace and those who are struggling with addiction can find strength and both know that my prayers are with you. I lost my nephew at 27, it just seems so senseless to me.
I learned to play this song way back in 1979 but I didn’t really get the tragedy of this drug “with fentanol” until it touched my life

Love neil young.nothing like sixty's music.never see anything close as far as raw creativity. It was a politically charged time. Anti war anti big goverment. The young people wanted to be left alone.goverment was old fashioned.high and tight.up tight. The 60's music provided the pefect sound track for news reels. The vietnam war with the rolling stones in the background. Awesome. Rock on 60's. It was America.

@ Angel, I really hope you’re doing well. If you’re having too many problems....maybe a rehab would get you back on track, there’s no shame in rehab. I sincerely wish you the best. Keep at it, it doesn’t always work the first time or the tenth time. But, eventually you’ll realize that there is life after drugs. My oldest brother, whom I was the closet to had a decades long herion addiction. One night in bad weather he was coming home from someplace he never should have been. We lost him that night @ the age of 64....I won’t go into details but he sadly suffered a horrible death. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy & I’m honestly pretty mean !! Please, let us know how you’re doing...

My dad passed away a year ago today, the needle did it’s damage. Help the ones you love, make an impression on everyone.

I came from the same generation as Young only Young came from an upper class up bringing & I came from a working class up bringing. You'd think I would be more prone to using drugs than him, but I was smart enough to see the stupidity in it & yes, I was in Rock bands also where the idiots took drugs. I really don't feel sorry for those who take drugs of any form & would never waste my time writing a song about it! My theory is, "you reap what you sow" For decades now, they have been preaching the dire consequences of drugs, but yet people want to continue being stupid & using them! I like my clear mind where I can think like a humans suppose to! I've written well over 100 songs which are on the internet, some Rock & some Jazz. Wanting to be someone who is revered to me is a mistake, because it takes away your personal life & hands it over to the public. Elvis Presley wished that he had stayed a truck driver because his life was constantly pestered by people & fame. You'll find that 95% of famous people came from upper middle class to wealthy families & it's because they feel the need to be important like there fathers or parents & they don't want to let them down. That's the type of mind set they are brought up with. My thought is, if you hear a song constantly played on the Radio, just about any one will most likely end up liking the song, thus Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone, it took me a long time to get use to that song & I always thought Dylan was a bad singer, as I also think Neil Young is, but like I said, if you hear them long enough, you get use to there voices. As for me, I prefer hearing voices like Geoff Tate's! The best Metal band singer I've ever heard to this day! I spent my whole life getting stoned, drunk, snorting oxies, acid, you name it, but still able to do my work as a timber cutter, and hitting everything hard ...it took a demon looking me square in the face telling me.."TROND! YOUR EITHER GOING TO LIVE OR YOUR GOING TO F-CKING DIE! and I challenged him (out loud..) your going to need some f-cking help with that!.., and he pushed me backwards by my face, and on my way over I remembered that I said I would help him, so I split my head open on the graveled driveway in front of my family and some guest, and they rushed me to the hospital but I was violent and refused service and told everybody "this is my deal, I'm taking care of this myself" I holed up that night in the woods so they couldn't find me with my head split open and towels soaked in blood wondering, what did he mean, "I'm either going to live or I'm going to die" and I realized " you idiot, you just smashed your own head open!" and then I thought... We'll, I hate quitters,...how can I justify that? and It might have been God because he quietly told me, " Trond, you can say that you have done that, and now you are not going to...." and now I am not going to. Been clean several years now.

Today's needle is the mobile phone. It (and technology addiction in general) is why we will never hear great music like this produced again. Our humanity is dying of technology.

@Karen Nielsen thank you much. you gave me hope just now. I was thinking I have enough pills to go as slow as I want. I honestly thought it was not possible to be on 0 mg even with a super slow taper, even with my dose currently at exactly 4mgs a day. [2mgs twice a day]. everyone says 'I will always feel it, and only a few of many get to none a day while feeling normal.' addiction is so weird I don't know to believe them, or not. its the only thing I cant figure literally[that and politics] but if you got to none and don't feel 'withdrwall ' I 100% believe you and will try by choice to QUIT. [ before it is not my choice and is not a convienent time, like now I have months free time and no pressing matters as of now ect.. if I were 100 % assured the withdrwall feeling would go away id wait months feeling horrible. it has been so long scince feeling regular without drugs I was 'told' it was too late and 'youll always need something[drug-wise]. and was convinced. im so glad you told me whats up. you know doctors they want $ a lot of the time. sorry for too long note, I ramble from brain damadge or brain problems. may GOD bless you and your family and friends. It was alcohol that sent me down the road of addiction, and that was hard enough, but I have huge respect for those who get clean from heroin. Almost 12 years for me now with no relapse. I pray for those who are trying. Hang in there and remember you don't have to be life's victim. We don't become addicted because we are weak. It happens because we're too sensitive. 💖

My good friend lost her son to health issues resulting from drug use even though he'd gotten clean. He was in his 30's. SO very sad. I have always loved Neil Young and CSNY...and this song is so powerful.

Have not had a hit 10/10/76. Because a good friend shared Jesus with me Thank God. Was able to bring 5 close friends out of the scene to Jesus.

I thought of this song when I was realizing I had to get sober or I was just going to '...fade away.' I always figured I'd burn out in a spectacular show of, well, something, and it hit me that that wasn't going to be what happened. Another couple of NY lines: '..well, she puts the kid away and she's gone to get a hit. She hates her life and what she's done with it.' Thank you, Neil Young, your words were simple and meaningful, and they helped change my life.
