Neil Young - High School Graduation Lyrics
The brick jail doors
that closed behind are cracking
The school boy told the woman in the street
Last night
I heard the bells of summer rapping
The emptiness of summer must begin it
The nagging of the mother of the wild
Convinced me that I had no way to win it
She took it from my hand and then she smiled
The coldness
of the closeness of the moonbeam
The walking in the dawn to greet the night
The water and the flower is a bad dream
It's over 'cause it's older than the midnight
The school boy told the woman on the street
The joining of the weekend - Monday daylight
Will leave the black rose meeting incomplete.

Joey- thank you for sharing this cut. Can you tell us which musicians are performing on what instruments on this cover version? Any other details about this recording (date in 1980? Location? Producer(s) if any?).
Nice to hear what sounds like the late, great Clarence Clemons on sax here (if it is indeed him)!

Joey, thanks for the great info. Had no idea you gained access to the Elektra Demos and ultimately got them to Neil for release on Archives Vol 1. Is Ken still a super Neil fan?
I obtained the Copyright Leadsheet from Cotillion Music in New York. I was also the original source of the 11/18/65 Elektra Demos that were on Neil's Boxset. I was interviewing former Elektra Producer Peter Siegel for a Book on Jackson Browne.
Peter lent me the 10 inch master reel to copy and I transferred it for Ken Viola to pass on to Neil.
Ken did a really credible job on this, and it's a joy and revelation to hear the song - finally, after all these years. A real shame that Neil has never released his piano demo - I had no idea a Neil recording even existed. Thanks again for this super rare treat! Btw, who was Neil's publisher at the time? He's obviously been managed by Lookout Management for decades, and Joel Bernstein was his former archivist. Did you get lyrics from one of them?
After Ken recorded this, he visited Neil's Publisher and they played him a demo of the song with Neil on Piano. Unfortunately, they wouldn't give him a copy. I've been searching for that demo ever since. Ken also told me that Neil really liked this cover.
Innaresting!
Wow! This a true neil rarity! Apparently Neil wrote the lyrics to this song in the 60s, but allegedly never recorded it, with it first appearing on The Sounds of Asbury Park album, circa early 1980s, sung by super Neil fan Ken Viola. Thanks for the great upload! http://blogs.app.com/rhythmroom/2011/03/28/celebrating-the-sounds-of-asbury-park-album-at-the-wonder-bar/
