Neil Young - Hawks & Doves Lyrics
Ain't getting old,
ain't getting younger though
Just getting used
to the lay of the land
I ain't tongue-tied,
I'm proud to be livin' in the U.S.A.
Ready to go, willin' to stay and pay
U.S.A., U.S.A.
So my sweet love can dance
another free day
U.S.A., U.S.A.
In history we painted pictures grim
The devil knows
The big wind blows,
so the tall grass bends
But for you don't
push too hard my friend.
Ready to go, willin' to stay and pay
U.S.A., U.S.A.
So my sweet wife can dance
another free day
U.S.A., U.S.A.
Got people here
down on their knees and prayin'
Hawks and doves
are circlin' in the rain
Got rock and roll,
got country music playin'
If you hate us, you just
don't know what you're sayin'.
Ready to go, willin' to stay and pay
U.S.A., U.S.A.
So my sweet love can dance
another free day
U.S.A., U.S.A.

Neil Young Hawks & Doves Comments
Just bought this on vinyl. Such a criminally underrated album. Also snagged Re•Ac•Tor.
So sad and a great pick to end the Tillman story. Long live Dr.Amp and those of us that miss democracy!
Thinking of Pat.
I remember when I first got this album back in 1992 the shop I got it from was called sell n buy in Ruislip England
The album is not very long about 28 minutes long
But I must say it's a great country album the single from the album was staying power and the b side of the 7inch was captain Kennedy
You can also get the other single hawks n doves the b side was union man some copys of the single are in mono
Neil's Canadian and he loves the US for its culture and music. But he hates southern men and Trump and Reagan. Read his autobiography
My mantra round 20 thanks Neil!
Came close to treading on the "Family Feud" theme song. Still dig this.
Neil is a cool liberal. Lol
Masterpiece
POTUS sucking russian dick
This is the first song that brought me over into Neil's camp.
god I love neil!!
slightly outa tune for a purpose. Love this song.
Pat Tillman.
If you hate us, you just don't know what you're sayin'
Underrated album. Love the artwork as well as the songs. The stand outs in my opinion are Little Wing, Captain Kennedy, and this one.
An interesting mix of country and rock. Unfortunately, this track never got much air play in the states. Great track though, God bless Neil Young wherever he is.
I'm proud to be livin' in the USA....Let freedom ring!
Ready to go, willing to stay and pay so my sweet love can dance another free day. I guess that's Ann Hillary O'Brien singing the great harmony?
Love it 🎼
You do all realize he's being ironic in this song, just like Springsteen's Born in the USA. Which is exactly why it was used in the Tillman documentary.
You do realize that Neil released this album the day before the presidential election of 1980, Carter vs. Reagan. You think Neil was making fun of patriotic Americans and the military?? Do some reading and learn the difference between irony and sarcasm, if you're gonna use those words.
It was why it was used in the the Tillman documentary. What an heartbreaking and powerful film and absolutely sickening story.
Rick B nah
And Neil is Canadian...
@Gary V Neil does surprisingly well at country twang for a guy who's a rocker!
POWERFUL WORDS....SOME LYRICS NEVER FADE AWAY.....NICELY DONE NEIL !!1
Next President of Enycountry. that is my oppinion, i dont hav to vote no more
Trump! Trump! Trump!
One of Neil's best. Still holds up after almost 30 years.
Don't you mean almost 40 years?
This music is a perfect example of what a great artist Neil Young is. It is right on so many levels.
"If you hate us, you just don't know what you're sayin'."
Exactly!
Great song.
"I'm Pat fucking TILLMAN!"
My all time favorite Neil record.
In history we painted pictures grim. The devil knows we might feel that way again.
brings a tear to my eye to hear this once again....i had it on vinyl in the '80s and haven't heard it since
I have the 8-track..hhehehe
Vinyl brought me here. Can't find it. Had to go YouTube'n.
I still have it on vinyl.
I remember giving my vinyl copy up, I've often regretted that. Sounds just like it did way back then.
Yes, Neil Young was born in Canada and started performing at 15 before moving to California six years later where he still resides. But that's six years performing while living in Canada and 47 years performing while living in California.
He's still Canadian living in the USA. Every somewhat political or social commentary song that's "American" is from an outsider's perspective.
The intro makes me wanna go buy a tele
You guys do know that Young was being sarcastic in his lyrics here, right? Listen to *any* of his other songs/albums ("Ohio", "Rocking in the Free World", "Throw Your Hatred Down", "Let's Impeach the President" - hell, all of Living With War), and if you still think he's sincerely falling on the conservative side here, then it's time to get your head examined. You're misinterpreting one side of one of his 50+ albums.
Seriously? The guy supported Reagan. He's got a very strong conservative side, and he always has. If you don't know that then you really don't know Neil Young. Yes, he was against Bush II. Yes he uses biofuel in his big Hummer. He isn't and never has been simply "conservative" or "liberal." Taking all of Neil Young's discography into account, there is no reason to believe this song is ironic.
Politically, Neil has been all over the map throughout the years. In 1980, he supported Reagan. I guess you never heard "Coming Apart at Every Nail" from the same album. INSIGHTFUL NEIL!!!!
@Jeffrey Barlow Agreed, that's how I've felt about him.
Well he gave permission to be used in the Tillman documentary, so it means something much more than it did then. Irony anyone?
Quit your bitching.
bush and clinton and bammy goin down for tillmans murder... we got you pat
one of his best albums
Maybe, just maybe, this is his greatest song!
this song is better than any lee greenwood song, that draft dodging hypocrite!
great song! Pat Tillman! the last great american hero. obama & bush = devil. wake up sheep!!
About a patriotic soldier going to war. "Ready to go, willin' to stay and pay/U.S.A. U.S.A./So my sweet love can dance another free day/U.S.A., U.S.A."
One of his finest! Thanks for posting.
comon letgso
This has always been one of my favorites. Neil said it all, "if you hate us you just don't know what your sayin'".
I used to have the 33 speed LP of this as a single in blue vinyl. Damn thieves in Anadarko, OK.
RIP Pat
Thank You for posting this!!! It's been many years since I heard this album :) Brings back some memories
