Neil Young - Grey Riders Lyrics
The night was cold
And the wind was howling
I was awaken by the sound
Of hoof beats pounding.
on the ground
Our hound dog was growling
Grey Riders flew across my lawn
I looked again
and they all were gone.
That voice was calling
And it cut through the night
Come on boys, let her go.
They rode in one long column
They were freezing with the chills
Of the new day dawning.
Their hair long and grey
They heard just one voice calling
Grey Riders on the morning sky,
The sun made diamonds
of their road-weary eyes.
That voice is calling
And it cut through the night
Come on boys, let her go.
The night was cold
And the wind was howling
I was awaken by the sound
Of hoof beats pounding.
Outside the window, on the ground
Our hound dog was growling
Grey Riders flew across my lawn
I looked again
and they all were gone.
That voice was calling
And it cut through the night
Come on boys, let her go.

Very creative Neil.
Hounting, scary, great.

Bit of confusion here since this was the tail end of the International Harvesters saga and they added some Nashville "cats" which turned out to be a major upgrade to the band. Thus, they changed the band name to the Grey Riders just for this short tour before Neil went back to Crazy Horse and the Rusted Out Garage tour later that year or the following year. Hargus "Pig" Robbins on piano was stunning on this tour and there is a twenty minute version of "Down By The River" with Hargus playing the Danny Whitten parts on piano that is not just the best version of the song ever done but might be the best version of any song ever done. It had such an "in the moment" power I felt at the time it was "holy music." Joe Allen on bass cut a groove a mile wide for the musicians to bounce off of and was just amazing. The tour was like seeing a bright comet in the sky light it up but then gone in an instant leaving you wondering what the heck was that? Here is some of what I've been writing about this time period and this very tour over on my dear friends website about Neil Young called Thrasher's Wheat...

This is how Neil Young remembers that night and he calls the version of "Down By The River" saying, "it's just ridiculous what happened to that song when this band played it" and I couldn't agree more with Neil on that. "Just the whole band with Joe playing the bass, Karl playing the drums, it is an amazing performance that I think stands up to anything that has ever been done on that song."

His unreleased songs would make a masterpiece 3-cd set like no other performer could ever dream of, with the possible exception of Dylan's unreleased gems.

Neil played this during his " International Harvesters Tour "
Another great song that took ages to be heard by everyone who didn't buy collectors CDs. Why he never put this on a legit album is beyond me.
@Droukis Daniel The beauty of it is there's always another Neil gem hidden somewhere!
Hope that remains true for ages
his record company in the 80's said most of the songs on this album were not commercial enough (including this one) this song was recorded somewhere between 1984 and 85 (live)
Originally recorded for Old Ways in 1983. Live version on "A Treasure" from 1984.
Love this song. Kicks ass
Heard this song for the first time on the weekend covered by Gordon Downie and the Sadies at the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic. Thanks to the guy standing next to me who told me the title and original artist.
+Rod Nolan Hey Rod . We are from the same part of the Web World obviously as i recognized all those references. Lol. Wasn't Neil supposed to play the picnic that year and had to back out for some reason? Maybe why Gord and the Sadies played a version?
I heard that Neil rumour too. That would have been a treat for sure! There's always next year, though. I'll be a dedicated Greenbelt Harvest Picnic fan 'til the day my legs can no longer get me there. ;-)
Rod Nolan

1st time i ever heard this song i was on a flight from Scotland to the USA. Our route took us over Greenland at night. This song came on about the time Greenland came into sight between the clouds and the snow caped mountains it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. 1st time of hearing this while going 750mph over a snow caped widerness one of the most special moments in my life. Still get chills listening to this wonderful song from a wonderful writer/preformer
Wow!! Far-- out man!!

@JerryJayfall Rock n Roll can never die !
@JerryJayfall
Didn't you hear? Neil was talking about seeing Tim & Rufus & Ben again someday and jamming with them and how great it would be and then he said "I hope you can make it too". I know I sure plan on being there.
Heaven, Neil, heaven, love you
@lightlyone just type youtube to mp3 into google and you can paste in the url
Great musical work with great imagery. Different keyboard work than we're used to with old Neil. Interesting pace and transitions. Needs to be on an album to get it 'out there' greater. Thanks for the magnifico post. Also reminds me of motorcycle riding for us old guys, too. Gotta get this on an mp3 somehow.
He's releasing this song finally commercially on a new archives live album called 'A Treasure' that is 12 songs compiled from his 84/85 tour with the International Harvesters.
@Ma874 It's not on any album. This is a live version from the '85 tour with the International Harvesters (the only time it was played). It may or may not have been recorded for the Old Ways album, but is not on it. I think it probably wasn't (written after).
fucking hell of a song. Go on Neil
where are crazy horse now
@MrFartboy79 yes neil is the greatest, even though he is often not considered the greatest
excellent post ,,thanks
when was this recorded? any more info? Is that a pure prairie league LP cover I see in the video?
when was this recorded
Yes the man has many, many, many unreleased tunes. Many personal songs...he felt too personal to release. we're all hoping Archives Vol. 2 will be filled with unreleased material...the hitchhiker, Mexico, Love Art Blues, Kansas, the original Tonight's The Night- in its entirety! Many, Many, many gems. Neil is truly the greatest...him and Dylan. No one comes close to those two! I saw Neil live a few weeks ago....phenomenal as always!
MrFartboy79
keep on rockin' Neil
@nosupercualponerme
That sounds real nice on paper (like a John Lennon song). In reality the greedy power hungry will make us all slaves. You won't travel any where except to your factory job. I'll give you a thumbs up for dreaming.

Damn! I hate the thought of him passing...
very nice!
A guy called out at The Hammersmith Odeon in London ... "I am a child" ... Neil looked up, leaned into the microphone, and answered: "Me too, man!" Neil is the man. I too have lived much of my life listening to his crosses and bows.
Was that the show in two parts? Acoustic first then all out rock for the second half? I remember there was some good banter. Someone shouted out, "say something Neil!" Neil, leans in and says, "these quiet moments between us are very special" haha
Gee this guy's got some great stuff. Just loved the Hounddog howl too!
I remember this song from the international harvesters tour. Yet another incredible unreleased Neil song. The guy is incredible.
