Neil Young - Grandpa's Interview Lyrics
"grandpa here's your coffee,"
Said edith as she filled his cup,
"nobody'll find you here
And earl is glad you guys showed up
You might have to stay for a while
There was a helicopter flyin' over your house
When i talked to your neighbor kyle"
"who the hell do they think they are?
Invading our home like that
Grandma and i had to leave so fast
We couldn't even catch the cat
The helicopter scared the shit out of it
Down past the railroad track
Towards the county jail"
"jed you really screwed up now
What'd you have to do that for?
Everybody wants to hang your ass
Here's a note from lenore"
She touched the cold steel bars
As she pushed the paper in
Jed took it up and read it
And couldn't hide a grin
Outside the jail window
A crow flew across the sky
Completely disappearing behind each bar
Then a helicopter flew by
"say hi to earl and edith
Tell'em i'm doin' fine
Tell'em you're ready to leave home now
And they should cut the line
Can grandma come and see me?
I've got a new song to sing
It's longer than all the others combined
And doesn't mean a thing"
The noise was unfamiliar...
A walkie talkie squealed
Generators were runnin'
Vans parked in the field
Tv crews and cameras
They wanted to interview grandpa on the porch
They came through the gate and up on the lawn
Knockin' down edith's tiki torch
Grandpa saw them there
Looking through the venetian blind
"those people don't have any respect
So they won't get any of mine
I ain't gonna talk about jed...
I don't watch channel 2 or 6 or 9
I don't have time to talk that fast
And it ain't my crime
It ain't an honour to be on tv
And it ain't a duty either
The only good thing about tv
Is shows like 'leave it to beaver'
Shows with love and affection
Like mama used to say
A little mayberry livin'
Can go a long way"
He took earl's gun from the closet
And loaded up both barrels
Went out on the porch and fired them off
And up walked a woman named carol
"susan carol from early magazine
I've got some questions to ask"
"well you can stick 'em where the sun don't shine,"
Grandpa said with a gasp
Then he fell face first and let out a sigh
Edith came out in shock
Grandpa was whispering to her from down on the floor
He looked like he was tryin' to talk
"that guy who just keeps singin'
Can't somebody shut him up?
I don't know for the life of me
Where he comes up with this stuff"
They laid his head on a newspaper
With a picture of carmichael on the front page
Posing with a little league baseball team
And a seedy shot of jed with a motorcycle.
Grandpa died like a hero
Fightin' for freedom of silence
Tryin' to stop the media
Tryin' to be anonymous
Share your lovin' and you'll live so long
Share your lovin' and you'll live so long
Share your lovin' and you'll live so long
Live so long

Neil Young Grandpa's Interview Comments
Too much of a ramble IMO - Ordinary People from Chrome Dreams II is far more accessible.
Love this album , seen him play this tour in Albuquerque New Mexico..raced outa the concert grabbed our guitar after and we played greendale to him and all who were there while he loaded up on his bus and drive away..was so cool!someone was at the bottom of the bus stairs looking out crouched down filming us😉 guess were in his groupie archives🌿BE THE RAIN🌿
Hellz Yea🤘
Got the CD. Had a cool bonus DVD of Neil doing the whole album solo "Live at vicar st.". He tells more of the story between the songs. In fact the picture above is the same CD. Solo and acoustic in Dublin, Ireland. Then a new version came out with a different bonus DVD called "Inside Greendale" and I had to buy it. Its Crazy Horse in a studio/barn(?) playing the album as you hear here. On the walls are Green Screen with scenes of the movie playing. I love the way Neil gives so many bonus DVDs. I also own the movie Greendale. Also had great seats at the live show, what a great old school production with cheesy stage props. Ben Keith played Grandpa. Neil's son Ben was there, hell everyone was there! Had to buy the shirts, playbill. Wife also got a hat. I figure just off GREENDALE Neil made a mint off me. And I have been following Neil since 1970's so in away I helped put his kids through school. Thanks Neil!
Great song
Long live the Godfather of Grunge!!! love that guitar tone
Neil always stayed true to his sound & music
can't ever get enough of it . "it' doesn't need a thing ".
Justin, except for maybe some cowbell.
I DON'T KNOW FOR THE LIFE OF ME WHERE HE COMES UP WITH THIS STUFF
caveman123ization I don't know either but I'm sooo glad he does.
I am a huge fan and have seen Neil about 15 times from 1982 - 2003. I last show I saw was Greendale at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater. No previous concert by Neil, or anyone else, has ever compared to it. The music kicked butt, naturally, but having the people on stage acting out all the songs was totally unique.
Saw this tour in Kansas City , a lot of fans didn't approve but I thought the performance with Crazy Horse's live music , several video movie screens and choreographed dancers , all the while being acted out on stage with live actors as well was tremendous .
Imagine você ás 03 horas da manhã tocando esta música na beira de um rio...
falar o que? fodaço o cara
Neil is a complex guy. Gotta understand growing up as a Canadian. Dad took off. Music was his path very early in High School. yet tragically he suffers from well epilepsy. He became a big success in the Bay Area and bought a huge track of land south .Yet the edge never left... shows uo in any interview. Yes he is grandpa here. You got it right.
Alex Delvecchio he survived polio
Seriously, thr most hilarious yet touching songs of his entire career. Sort of like he's (Neil s) grandpa, the singer that won't shut up and thr guy about to get gassed. I love this song
neil the best
~I don't watch channel 2 or 6 or 9.
Opening guitar riff lifted from Baby Its You by the Beatles. One of Neils best songs!
Can anyone tell me why there are tracks 2, 9 & 10 are deleted?
+Theresa De Gennaro
On the playlist ? They are on the record. Maybe copyright violation. My favourite is 'Sun Green'.
+Loren Davis gotta love Sun Green
One of my greatest gifts ever was when my BFF took us to see this, this rock opera. She told me i was in for a treat; it blew my mind it was so cool! Neil wanted to tell a story, and he did it in a perfectly conducted experience! Don't you agree?
Saw the show in LA, one of the best concerts I've seen, did Greendale in it's entirety as a theatrical performance, 45 minute intermission then did 90 minutes of thier previous music for the 60s through the 90s, Young did these extended improvised guitar solos that blew my mind...one one the best guitarist no doubt... among other things..
@alpha java saw same tour in Albuquerque. Great to see Ben Keith as grandpa.
It's a story. Spark one up if you please and listen to "Greendale' in entirety. The distorted guitar is Neil Young's intention. Great story.
@Michael Horsford
Cool
+Loren Davis Grandpas Interview, I saw it live man; ;)
Makes me wanna cry
+Loren Davis These days it seems to be spark up the vape pen!!!
Theresa De Gennaro almost always fucking cry at this track, almost all of greendale is so emotional for me I don’t know why
He even distorts (way out of tune) one of the strings of his guitar in the solo acoustic version "Live at vicar st." There is no other like Neil who doesn't just play, but exudes the music with all his heart and soul.
This song is a perfect platform for Crazy Horse to bang out a simple and effective beat to a brilliant and timeless story.
Yes you are right. The Horse loves this tempo
meeting this man is definitely on my bucket list!
+luis ramirez Mine as well I'm 41 & he's been my hero since I was 7 LIVE RUST made my life more complete the Roadeye's amazed my young mind forever THANK YOU NEIL I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!
i cut his grass in winnipeg in the late sixties i know him great genius of our time
Electric guitar, bass guitar and drums, throw in faded Levi's and a flannel shirt...... that's ALL you need for good music. Share your lovin' and you live so long.....
Green Genes...so what? Hungry heart by Springsteen sounds similar too if you speed up the tempo...songs are bound to sound similar sooner or later, there are only so many notes and after several centuries of song writing and music making, there are always going to be similar sounding songs
i like grandpa, for not liking tv,400 stations all more empty then the universe, logic lightyears away.
freedom not to talk to media
who is this cat on here talking about plagerism, about this song sounding like Waiting on a Friend?...sheesh, no rule at all about playing a major chord and adding a 6th to it, plus the cadence is different.....and then he gets all azzbite on people, bad manners, dude
Also, this song is fantastic for it lyrics alone even without the music.
neil for world president has my vote
hero of silence,is hero to be.
Best song on the album imo
There's a guitar riff on this song that's lifted straight off of "Waiting On A Friend" by the Rolling Stones; very much a rarity for Neil.
@Green Genes Sure, I'd make up I knew Randy & the others...It's important to me you believe it...You probably have some of my stuff in your dusty old record collection but not gonna go there...Hey, burn one for me if you would
@johny ransome If you're referring to me, I debate music all the time being it's a passion..I'll get into a debate over Dylan's most meaningful lyric or Neil Young's most productive period etc..You're so important it looks like both words in your name are misspelled...By the way, I AM important to a select group of ppl..
johny,
before you start worshiping habib, go to his profile page and read his post on 9/11. He writes about the pilots in heroic terms and wishes Bin Laden was still alive, calling him a genius. This guy is an enemy of the U.S. and is, at the very least, an al-Qaeda sympathizer if not a terrorist cell member. I would be a little more careful about who I aligned myself with. You can bet your ass that the NSA has a file on him.
You're a fool johny.
worried?
The weirdest song on the album but one of my favourites for some reason, just love the music on this album and one song just ties into the next...
"Grandpa died like a hero. Fighting for freedom of silence!" Brilliant.
Amazing and emotional
Yes it is very.
From his cell Jed says "I got a new song to sing..." so Grandpa might be meaning can't someone stop Jed from doing dumb things(shooting a cop) OR- Grandpa may be referring to the Media that seems to keep on singing(writing stuff) and Grandpa wants someone to stop media. I havent seen movie, it might be clearer as to what Grandpa's final words mean.
gitar says it all, grandpa has style.
Coool-i shall check it out, have u read it?The film is awfy good.
It is for sale on Amazon
Didnt know that-id like to check that out...ta 4 the heads up there.
What does he mean when Grampa says his final words: "That guy just keeps singin'. Can't somebody shut him up..."?
great....
Man I love this song. The funny pare is that I actually recorded a little interview of my own grandfather, nothing like this, but it's hilarious. right on my page. I promise you'll laugh
perfect song/music
This track goes through merger and bones. Love greendale album.
Also a comic book graphic novel from DC Comics.
Amazing movie/album...nuff said.
