Neil Young - Flying On The Ground (Is Wrong) Lyrics

Is my world not falling down
I'm in pieces on the ground
And my eyes aren't open
And I'm standing on my knees
But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down,
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you.

Turn me up or turn me down
Turn me off or turn me round
I wish I could have
met you in a place
Where we both belong
But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down,
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you.

Sometimes I feel
like I'm just a helpless child
Sometimes I feel like a king.
But baby, since I have changed
I can't take nothing home.

City lights at a country fair
Never shine but always glare
If I'm bright enough to see you,
You're just too dark to care.
But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down,
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you.

"If I'm bright enough to see you, you're just too dark to care" ... one of the most brilliant lyrics ever written ..... thank you so much, Neil.... you gave this to the world when I was 16 -- still brilliant and poignant.

This is the first time hearing this. I'm more familiar with the cover done by The Guess Who. Have to respect the original author's version!

    T.... K....

The Guess Who Covered This??? I think you mean The Buffalo Springfield did the Original version. But Richie Fury Sang Lead On it ..... Neil Young Wrote The Song . It's On The Buffalo Springfiels' First Album .....!

obviously you never heard Kendra Smith sing this song...not your fault it was a hard record to find in 1984 and a genuine interpretation ,not better not worse, just genuine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-pvP0cjgh8

This song reminds me so much of my dad who died 3 years ago. I can't get through it without breaking down. Beautiful song!

I'm sorry for your loss. Even though listening to it is difficult, it's good that you have a song that connects you to him that way.

  10. n.... ....

Going through my worst break up at the moment, listened to Cellar Door concert through to the end and this song felt like it was written for my situation.
Neil Young, you are always surprising me with your lyrics, hope to see him live in Australia one day.
Thanks for making me feel a bit better temporarily.

I like the solo piano version, where can one find it?

  15. H.... ....

I much like the cover of this song found on the "Rainy Day" by Rainy Day album, with Kendra Smith (of Dream Syndicate, & Opal) singing. It's a 1984 one-off L.P. collaboration of musicians from L.A.'s Paisley Underground bands doing cover songs. They also do Neil's "On the Way Home".

  16. M.... S....

One of my fovourites of this record and period. Great versión of Buffalo Springfield's song.

  17. L.... T....

    Classic Neil,Back to the Roots/Springfield!!!!

  18. 1.... ....

    The best version.

+1Cweasel:  It's a very rich version, isn't it... lush and emotional.  Love the piano lines especially.
