Neil Young - Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It Lyrics

Do I have to come right out
and say it,
Tell you that you look so fine?
Do I have to come right out
and ask you to be mine?
If it was a game I could play it,
Trying to make it
but I'm losing time
I got to bring you in,
you're overworking my mind.

Indecision is crowding me,
I have no room to spare
And I can't believe she cared
Like a dream she has taken me
And now I don't know where
And a part of me is scared
The part of me I shared
Once before.

Do I have to come right out
and say it,
Tell you that you look so fine?
Do I have to come right out
and ask you to be mine?

Indecision is crowding me,
I have no room to spare
And I can't believe she cared
Like a dream she has taken me
And now I don't know where
And a part of me is scared
The part of me I shared
Once before.

Do I have to come right out
and say it, girl
Tell you that you look so fine?
Do I have to come right out
and ask you to be mine?
If it was a game I could play it,
Trying to make it
but I'm losing time
I got to bring you in,
you're overworking my mind.

Do I have to come right out
and say it, girl
Tell you that you look so fine?

Met and wooed a lot of girls with this song in 67. Not too many of them had ever heard it. I played it on the juke box at Marine Bar, sang it to them. My brother and I put it on the playlist of our band, it was a huge hit with the crowds.

  3. C.... ....

IN my opinion, this song has some of the BEST vocals they ever had.

My favorite album of the main 3.  So many cool easy songs.  Definitely the genesis of  CS&N and CSN&Y...This was the music I grew up with in the 60s.  Now at 66, I can still see why...Ed<><

  17. K.... M....

  24. R.... S....

Back in February of 1967,the radio played both sides of this single,For what its worth/Do I have to come right out and say it.Could easily have been a double A side record.

    R.... S....

    @Ron Slack How so?Most B-sides don't with a few exceptions.

  25. C.... T....

If it was a game ,I could play it..but. The devils on the loose...Pray Pray Pray People..

  26. P.... M....

A funny story:  I moved to Anchorage, AK, in late 1967 and found that they had been playing this song for months and calling it "For What It's Worth" since the copies of the 45 that were sent to local radio stations had the labels reversed (this was the flip side) and since "FWIW" never had that line in the lyrics, who knew?  Someone pointed this out just about the time I arrived in Anchorage, but it turned out to be the #1 song of the year on radio station KENI.

  27. C.... M....

Thank goodness for Utube.  I'm getting and listening to these great songs is one of the few joys I have.

  28. R.... P....

Discovered Neil Young in 1973 and fairly sure he was credited with this song on single.

    R.... P....

    What do you mean?

    R.... P....

    Richie Furay sang it.

    R.... P....

    Neil wrote it.

    R.... P....

    In the US, too

  30. C.... o....

I was sitting out on the porch with the pooch and the title of this song came to me, remembered they lyrics & melody but could not for the life of me remember who did it. My best ( Alzheimer's moment) guess was Jefferson Airplane. AH! Buffalo Springfield! Now I remember! Off one of my all time favorite albums. Really glad someone has uploaded it, would much rather hear it than have to resort to a boring old google search.

  31. F.... W....

  32. d.... n....

  33. d.... n....

This song charted because of extensive airplay in one American city - Buffalo, NY.  50,000-watt powerhouse WKBW was known for b-sides, such as this and "Oh, Woman, Oh Why" by Wings.  It also advanced the songs "2+2=?" by Bob Seger and Del Shannon's remake of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb."

    j.... b....

Yes, WKBW, all time best listening!!

    j.... b....

@Craig McIntosh I used to listen to WKBW late at night on my 6 transistor radio in Dover, NH, and heard lots of fantastic tunes from 64-67 that were evidently never played in the rest of the country.  I distinctly recall hearing Them's original version of "Gloria" years before the second rate version by the Shadows of Knight became a national hit.

    j.... b....

@john baran I grew up with KB [also WNIA, and I can still remember the Dan Neaverth intro] but I believe that the Del Shannon version of Under My Thumb came first.

    j.... b....

+john baran Yessss!!! KB! Joey Reynolds! And somebody else who remembers 2+2 = other than me!

  35. K.... K....

    earp john who?

  36. A.... M....

I grew up on this stuff.......just keep spreading the music......music lovers of all ages "get" that the 60's music changed everything for the future. It's awesome that 50 years later we can play these classics and be inspired again and again. Cheers!

  37. B.... B....

Oh how I love this...honored to know Stephen and Neil so well after all of these years.

  38. J.... W....

    A lovely song.

  39. D.... D....

some of the best stuff out there and hardly anyone knows :)

    D.... D....

I've been replaying this stuff for at least 50 years...

  40. t.... ....

    Just a great song!
