Neil Sedaka - The Hungry Years Lyrics

Girl we made it to the top
We went so high we couldn't stop
We climbed the ladder leading us nowhere
Two of us together
Building castles in the air

We spun so fast we couldn't tell
The gold ring from the carousel
How could we know the ride would turn out bad
Everything we wanted
Was everything we had

I miss the hungry years
The once upon a time
The lovely long ago
We didn't have a dime
Those days of me and you
We lost along the way

How could I be so blind
Not to see the door
Closing on the world
I now hunger for
Looking through my tears
I miss the hungry years

We shared our daydreams one by one
Making plans was so much fun
We set our goals and reached the highest star
The things that we were after
Were much better from afar

Here we stand just me and you
With everything and nothing, too
It wasn't worth the price we had to pay
Honey take me home
Let's go back to yesterday

I miss the hungry years
The once upon a time
The lovely long ago
We didn't have a dime
Those days of me and you
We lost along the way

How could I be so blind
Not to see the door
Closing on the world
I know hunger for
Looking through my tears
I miss the hungry years
I miss the hungry years

  3. K.... F....

I love this song as it reminds me when I was seventeen and my boyfriend was eighteen and I was pregnant and we had nothing and was hungry, but we were still happy and I would do it all again,
(I miss the hungry years!) and our youth.
    😔..... 👵👴....🙄Xx

  4. G.... M....

    What a song writer

  5. S.... M....

I think today’s youth would do well to listen to this song ? They live in such materialistic times now ✌🏻

  6. M.... F....

  7. G.... B....

it's who we are. not about money and things

The hungry years are the best years of our lives , when we struggle with life then we are truly living it....I love this song for it reminds me to live in the moment because the moment passes and we can never get it back.

Even the Hakka labourers/workers/employees next door heard me sang them. And whenst the songs were made public release on the Redifussion, once I arrived home from school whilst eating my lunch + flipping through/scanning through the NST Newspaper @ the same time listening + singing-a-long Neil Sedaka's songs ... whenever I sing any new songs including those under his voice, sooner or later, it gradually made its way to the Redifussion during the '70s of The Carpenter's eg. Crying in the Rain, Laughter in the Rain, O Carol etc.

I saw Neil at Twin Towns in the late 80's your couldn't tell the difference from him performing live and the recording, what a talent.

  18. O.... ....

"Wow!" is the closest I can come, of all the words in the English language, to describe how I feel listening to the music and hearing the words. As "Hawkeye" used to say, "Finest kind!" (Don't you think this should be Required Listening for a lot of Hollywood couples---and maybe "civilians?"

  19. L.... J....

  24. R.... l....

If you have been in love for a long time you just know what he's on about .

  25. I.... l....

The truth is, This song was written about James & Betty Corrigan who owned the Batley variety club, UK.
James Corrigan was from a fairground background "Gold Ring from the Carousel" and he went on to make millions with the club and lost it all..
Neil performed at there club many times in the 60s & 70s and was a very close friend to them.

  26. G.... W....

I try to see him whenever he is touring in the uk, he’s even better live, cant believe his voice is still brilliant. Great musical doing the rounds too, “Oh Carol” see it if you can.

  27. M.... ....

    A master of his craft

  28. k.... ....

tremendous artist I saw him in Vegas and he is one of the very best talents. Consider his talent as a songwriter alone. I salute you.

Solitaire , Words and Music by NEIL SADAKA and PHILIP CODY was the big sell out.  Copyright 1972 by Don Kirshner and WARNER BROS  17 BERNERS STREET, LONDON W1P 3DD . and Kirshner is correct is correct in U.K.  Laughter In The Rain was also a good one in the U.K.. I went to Batley, in W Yorkshire from Cheshire to hear all the music and stayed 2 nights.

I Love Neil...but the truth of the matter is Neil didn't "sell out" to the big recording companies. Neil owns all his works, by not sharing with the "Fat Cat greedy pigs" he became an outcast...He"s not the only one just do some checking around see who else is not in the "Hall of Shame"...
We love you Neil ,Thank You for a lifetime of music.
