Neil Diamond - I'm A Believer (1979 Version) Lyrics

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me
Paper houses made to stand with paper nails
That's all I thought that love could ever be

What's the use in trying
All you get is pain
When I needed sunshine
I got rain

Then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in your mind
I'm in love
And I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried
Not if I tried

Thought that love
Was more or less a givin' thing
Seems the more I gave the less I got
Like a flower that grows,
Love's like a living thing
Living things don't like to be forgot
Love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams

Then I saw her face
I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I'm a believer
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I'm in love
Yeah I'm a believer

What, in the late 70's did he vacation in the Caribbean and fall in love with a Trinidad girl, thus the calypso version?

  7. W.... S....

    '67 ftw

  8. M.... S....

Neil Diamond also wrote another song for the Monkey's. A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You. He never made his own studio recording of this song.

  9. D.... G....

hi dad this iam bevier neil dimhad

  10. t.... ....

The 1979 version starts at 2:39.

  11. G.... ....

So this was off the Bang Record label...loved this sound...but Mickey D has my favorite version. In fact, still one to send him in response to...what am I waitin' for? Never made a good business man...oh well...my time is past. Hail the youth and their own music...this stuff is in my musical memories now! But I began writing my own stuff after waiting in line with some 33,000 people for tickets at the Greek to one of his shows back in 1977

  12. t.... ....

In 1970, Bang Records overdubbed an orchestra on to the 1967 version and put it out as a 45. He also redid it in 2012. I put those two, these two and 7 (!) covers in my Diamond playlist. Thanks for the double upload!

  13. E.... B....

    I agree with jackiline

  14. M.... S....

Diamond wrote it and recorded his version first. However, the Monkees version was released before this was although he was singing it live.

  15. G.... A....

Somehow I thought Smash Mouth didn't write this lol Okay, so I'm young. I'm learning rock history lol

    G.... A....

Thanks. If you are just starting out with Neil's music can I suggest you listen to his raw '60's music ?  "Someday Baby", "You'll Forget", "The Time is Now" "Lordy" "Merry Go Round (which I uploaded recently)" and "Practically Newborn".

    G.... A....

    Thank you :)

    G.... A....

+Greg B. Try "Cherry, Cherry", "The Grass Won't Pay No mind", SWEET CAROLINE ,

    G.... A....

and The Monkees did this Before Smash Mouth

  16. J.... S....

Neil Diamond WROTE it and the Monkees sang it.

    J.... S....

I'm a little partial to The Monkees' version, but your mileage may vary.  As Diamond goes, I think the 1979 version is better.

  17. P.... B....

    Nice mix...thanks!

  18. t.... ....

There are a couple of different alternate mixes of the 1967 mono version. I have a stereo remix (on the "Shilo" album). Then, Bang Records overdubbed an orchestra and released it as a single in 1970. That version is also in my Monkees playlist.

    t.... ....

What, you don't have Tin Huey's version?

  19. t.... ....

Oh yeah check out my 1 week old "Practically Newborn" LOL...

  20. E.... M....

Thanks for commenting. Always a pleasure to get feedback such as yours! Check out my other Neil Diamond uploads such as Once in a While, The Time is Now and Theme.

  25. T.... ....

Just Beautiful, that's all I can say about Neil in those times Man what a gorgeous Man. Thanks for this video... I wish I could give him a big kiss to thank him being around in my life all those years ago. I would stay in my room listening to his music dreaming about finding a Man who was as Gorgeous and Gallant as him it did happen but it took a couple of years, and a couple of heartbreaks... Thanks ....

  26. t.... ....

Thanx, that's not a bad idea or I could splice the three so that it plays as one track.

  27. t.... ....

Nah that's just a myth. Elvis Presley wrote the song LOL, LOL, LOL...

  28. M.... V....

    NEIL WROTE THIS SONG

  29. M.... ....

    monkees first

  30. C.... F....

I think ND was the first!

  31. t.... ....

ND released as an album cut in 1967, released about 8-9 months after the Monkees' single. Bang Records later overdubbed orchestration onto Neil's version and put that mix out as a single in 1970 or '71. Thanks for the mashup -- now you'll have to add the "Dreams" version in.

  32. M.... C....

    Happy Birthday Neil Diamond :-)

  33. I.... ....

Thanks for the kind answer. In my childhood in Ukraine I knew only Monkeys, I had the whole reel of their records :)) and unfortunately much later - Neil Diamond. Is it his real name -Diamond?

    I.... ....

    Yes, it's his real name.

  34. M.... D....

jeff barry and wife ellie greenwich owned the writing team---ellie gave neil a true big break and wanted him signed later encouraging him to sing his own songs

  35. M.... D....

neil was on staff as a writer turning out songs for whomever they were goiing to be turned over to--oversimplification---he wrote a few from a female perspective and were recorded by at least one maybe more girl gropus --Kirchner came callin' to the writing team he was with for something for the monkees as he had heard some of neil's stuff--cherry cherry to be axact and liked it and thought he may be able to write something that would be a good fit--this was one of a few they did

  36. I.... ....

    Thank You!

  37. l.... ....

Evidently Neil wasn't too proud of this when he wrote it...thought it was too bubble-gum or something. Fast-forward to the day before yesterday, I was playing Neil's new greatest hits CD in the car with - after it was over my 5 year old granddaughter said "Play 'I Am A Believer again' ". Hey, kids are people too. She has subsequently asked for it over and over again!

  38. l.... ....

Neil Diamond wrote it and the Monkees recorded it and had a hit with it. Neil recorded it later, I believe, but didn't have a hit with it. That's OK, he's had a million more hits!

  39. D.... E....

Neil wrote this song in prison serving three days for vagrancy.

    D.... E....

    WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING???

    D.... E....

Not true! Neil is a great composer, vocalist. Never in trouble with the law!

  40. D.... H....

I saw in a monkees Documentary that Niel wrote it for The monkees .
    I could be mistaken.

  41. S.... E....

Neil wrote this and sang it...and he got a kick out of the Monkees singing it! :-) Their version sold a lot more than Neils....but he was proud that they did it.

  42. t.... ....

@tedibair Hi thanks for your comments, not just on this but the other 3 videos on YT. I think i will check Neil's website and see if i can find the answer there.

  43. t.... ....

@Irin828 Hello happy you enjoyed it. I'm not to sure. I hope someone can answer this.

  44. t.... ....

Whilst it sounds like Neil... there isnt a great deal of difference between this version and the Monkees... As I heard the Monkees version first I think I lean towards that one... However, you always manage to find a song sung by a second singer that I have NEVER heard before... thats what makes your channel always exciting..

Thanks tc... please dont stop!!! Bubba

  45. I.... ....

Thankx for a memory from childhood. But who was the first-ND or The Monkees?

  46. t.... ....

Thanks for commenting. Did you also see my Elvis video on YT ?
