Neil Diamond - Brooklyn Roads Lyrics

If I close my eyes
I can almost hear my mother
Callin', "Neil go find your brother
Daddy's home, and it's time for supper
Hurry on."

And I see two boys
Racin' up two flights of staircase
Squirmin' into Papa's embrace
And his whiskers warm on their face
Where's it gone?
Oh, where's it gone?

Two floors above the butcher
First door on the right
And life filled to the brim
As I stood by my window
And looked out on those
Brooklyn Roads

I can still recall
The smells of cookin' in the hallways
Rubbers drying in the doorways
And report cards I was always
Afraid to show

Mama'd come to school
And as I sit there softly crying
Teacher'd say, "He's just not trying
Got a good head if he'd apply it
But you know yourself,
It's always somewhere else."

I built me a castle
With dragons and kings
And I'd ride off with them
As I stood by my window
And looked out on those
Brooklyn roads

Thought of going back
But all I'd see are stranger's faces
And all the scars that love erases
But as my mind walks through those places
I'm wonderin',
What's come of them?

Does some other young boy
Come home to my room
Does he dream what I did
As he stands by my window
And looks out on those
Brooklyn roads
Brooklyn roads

I love his Musik from Child on. Thanks Neal.

Nice song which makes me remember my childhood whenever I hear it. I like the ending too, when he says when theri boy comes to his room and looks at the old Brooklyn roads, and this is very significant as although I am old there are still children like my grandsons who are undergoing experiences similar to those I had.

" Got a good head if he'd apply it, but you know yourself, it's always somewhere else"... Yes, he was probably thinking about writing great songs and performing in front of millions of fans around the world.... Which he did, for over 50 years!

I have loved Neil Diamond since 1969. I was 5 years old when my sister brought home his album. Her boyfriend had headphones and I'd lay in front of my Dad's stereo and listen to his album. When it finished, I'd listen to it all over again.
What an Amazing Man, such a BEAUTIFUL GIFT God gave us.
    Love you Neil Diamond ❤️💝

    M.... J....

Oh, my sister married her boyfriend and today they're still married. They've had a wonderful Life together. But, just like Neil Diamond, my brother-in-law has Parkinson's Disease.

  16. i.... h....

you would expect those lyrics from an old, wise man sitting in a rocking chair, reflecting his childhood. Neil was just 26, 27 years old when he wrote this song. Unbelievable. An old soul in a young man.

  17. G.... O....

Great one , Neil is totally brilliant

  18. T.... D....

Neil Diamond is a true American Icon. So talented, so good to the core. Love you, Neil. God Bless You.

    This sucks.

  21. S.... ....

2019 and this song is as good as it ever was.

  22. J.... M....

"Los caminos de Brooklyn" Excelente canción nostálgica que me hace recordar mis tiempos de niñez. Me gusta como está cantada con letra bien pronunciada y clara por lo que és fácil de entender. Y el mensaje es muy bueno. Aunque para mi la niñez pasó hace mucho, muchos niños están pasando por ella hoy.

  23. L.... E....

    What an artist.

  24. S.... E....

Sorry, love the music, but what is with that photo? It looks like he has Herpes on his lips. I would have picked a different photo for that first video. Yuck.

  25. J.... H....

Met my husband in 1966 and he introduced me to Neil's LP cuts such as this and 'Holiday Inn Blues; always thoughtful and clever rhymes. Cancer broke us up after 47 years...

  26. T.... G....

    I definitely love this song

    T.... G....

  27. G.... V....

Neil Diamond was in 1977, four days on Tour in Netherland.there were problems with the Hammond organ (117 Volt America-Europe 220 Volt) I'm approached by Lou van Rees Management for a solution to my Hammond Rent. After four days I got my B3 Hammond returned with Fire spots of Cigarettes. It frustrated me.They have me removed me from the Neil Diamond Fan Club because I had this listed on their site.Never Excuse of Neil Diamond ☹️🎹

  28. P.... S....

Love hearing a song about the story of his life: he writes and gets to the heart of the matter. Thanks Neil!

    For Neil: to heal him:
Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 Times | महामृत्युंजय मंत्र I Mahamrityunjaya Mantra | Om Tryambakam Yajamahe

Mahamrityunjay Mantra Benefits is a very powerful life restoring mantra to overcome all illness and chronic diseases. Regular recitation of this Mantra helps in restoring health and peace of mind. A true Fairy tail. Mr. Diamond seems to capture the hearts and emotions of the world, as he caught everyone's attention in his songs. Lets all come together soon and give back to him, all the memories he gave us. Lets sing to him now, since he is fighting the worst battle of his life and it is taken away his thoughts and memories. Heavenly father, we deeply ask you restore this angel of a human his memories so we can enjoy him to the end. Please dear lord. save our Angel at heart.

Oh, those eyes!!! That face!!! The voice!!! How God has Blessed this man. Such an enormous talent. Can’t think of a single some he has ever sung that I haven’t loved. He simply doesn’t know how to write and sing anything that doesn’t come from his heart and every fiber of his being. Life wouldn’t have been the same without him in it. God be praised...

  71. J.... S....

The son of a young boy come home to my room and he dreamed what I did as he stands by my window and looks out on those Brooklyn Roads. That was me . . . I saw Brooklyn Roads when I was a young boy living in Columbus Ohio, between the ages of 11 and 13, from what seemed like a third story apt. window, many times in dreams and visions before Neil's song hit the airwaves. There was something I loved about it, but I didn't know why, or what, but strangely I knew the vision was of a busy street called "Brooklyn Roads." This was realized when I actually saw a picture of Brooklyn Roads in a Neil Diamond brochure. Then, when I heard it for the first time, I was drawn to it, as if it was what I had been waiting for. Go figure . . .

  80. D.... M....

I first listened to Neil shortly after these really early songs came out. This is one of the best. I was a lonely, sensitive kid and these early songs really spoke to me. However, starting with "I am, I said" he changed- got pompous, and became an "entertainer" and a sex symbol for the kinds of middle age women I would never hang out with. I have never seen him in concert, for these reasons. I ignored him for many years. However, Rick Rubin got a hold of him several years ago and gave him the Johnny Cash treatment- stripped down the sound, got rid of the attitude, and I became a big fan again. Did two albums with Rubin, and after that he has settled down, and once again became my favorite singer.

  81. M.... B....

Tu garganta fue bendecida por Dios, Neil.

  82. G.... ....

    What a musical genuis!

  83. D.... L....

Neil has such a strong following mainly because the majority of the people can relate to the words in the music he sings and he puts them to such appropriate music

    Per: http://www.oldiesmusic.com/news.htm {03-21-2018}...
The Songwriters Hall of Fame announced Tuesday (March 20th, 2018) that their annual Johnny Mercer award (for a songwriter or songwriting team whose body of work is of such high quality and impact that it "upholds the gold standard set by the legendary Johnny Mercer”) will go to Neil Diamond. Neil will receive the award June 14th, 2018 in New York City...
Personal Note: "Brooklyn Roads", my favorite of all his great records!!!

  97. J.... M....

Neil Diamond is a great singer and composer too. And he sings with feeling with an easy and natural way and pronounces the words clearly in all his songs so it is easy to understand what he says and what he says is great. All of his songs are meaningful and have a good message in them. This one has been one of my favorites since I first heard it nearly fifty years ago.
