Neil Diamond - And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind Lyrics

Listen easy,
You can hear God callin'
Walkin' barefoot by a stream
Come unto me
Your hair softly fallin'
On my face as in a dream
And the time will be our time,
And the grass won't pay no mind

Sayin' nothin', lyin' where the sun is
Bakin' down upon our sighs
My lips touch you
With their soft wet kisses,
Your hands gentle in reply
And the time will be our time,
And the grass won't pay no mind

Child, touch my soul with your cries
And the music
Will know what we've found
I'll hear a hundred goodbyes,
But today I hear only one sound
The moment we're livin' is now
Na, na, na, na

Young bird flyin'
And a soft wind blowin'
Cools the sweat inside my palms
Close my eyes
And hear the flowers growin'
As you lay sleeping in my arms
And the time will be our time,
And the grass won't pay no mind
No, the grass won't pay no mind

What a gorgeous early (1969) song from the great Neil Diamond.. :-]

  5. j.... n....

Sorry I love old Neil but no one can sing this song like Elvis he knocks it out of the park.

  6. D.... T....

Great song. But to me Elvis Version is better

  7. C.... B....

Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & the Raiders also did this song....and it's also VERY good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n00BsxP2e8

  8. N.... H....

Neil Diamond sings this song do wonderfully.

  9. T.... ....

One of Neil Diamond's best! So easy to listen to... melts away the tension of life... along with his other summer songs, " Sunday Sun," "Glory Road," " Honeydrippin' Times,""Do It," and ...oh.. let's say... ALL the others! One of the true American legends!

  10. R.... M....

Thank you for posting this, Alyce. It's in my top 5 favorites of Neil's songs.....

  11. n.... w....

I have loved Neil's music since the 70's. Love your video . Thanks for posting. Please listen to the song " Annie the writers ". Thank you. https://youtu.be/sEfa_1vK1mI

  12. c.... b....

Neil Diamond.. what more can you say? The Jazz Singer??

  13. k.... ....

I used to think this would have been a great song for Leonard Nimoy to cover. No kidding, I liked his folk-singing voice. Like on "The Touch of Leonard Nimoy", and "New World".

  14. R.... M....

Happy birthday Neil, but sad to hear about the Parkinsons and that you are retiring from touring. On the plus side medical science is advancing rapidly in this field and I am sure you will soon be as good as new

  15. j.... ....

This is Neil Diamond in his purest form. One of his best.

    j.... ....

Very true. I so enjoy this song.

  16. L.... G....

This is the most Beautiful song I ever heard

I love Elvis's version but still this guy wrote this, mad respect.

  18. G.... F....

Love this song, but I like Mark Lindsay's version much better........ ;-)

  19. J.... H....

Best version this one, Elvis has a great voice but this sounds more natural. Simply Beautiful. Thanks for posting.

    J.... H....

I concur. Neil's highly emotional vocal of the song is the best version by a country mile!

    J.... H....

Neil,is the best at this song. it belongs to him.

  20. C.... W....

A first-rate writer of pop songs regrettably in this song -- his song -- Diamond reveals how little of a singer he was. It's almost painful to listen. (And yet he made excellent records, too). Conversely, Presley takes the 'Grass' -- a fine song -- and brings it to life. Nothing but fresh green. How different the two version are...

  21. J.... C....

My husband and I followed Neil Diamond closely in our younger years, but then life interrupted. I just found this on the six month anniversary of his death (after almost 46 years of marriage). I will cherish this song and your posting forever with my memories of him and our great life together.

  22. K.... B....

A book of verse beneath the bough,
A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thou,
    Beside me in the Wilderness
    Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!

  23. J.... t....

Alice I will forever be in your debt for posting this song by Neil. You are a very special person.

  24. C.... R....

If any of you have actually heard Neil's live version of this song in the 72 HAN tour .... and still thinks THIS version is better ........you are nuts.

  36. N.... G....

This taste of music is unique !!! :)

  37. g.... b....

"Juliet" takes me back to Penang, '72-74. Great times, great place with sadness...

  38. R.... M....

The modern day Musketeer, the musical D' Artagnan swashbuckling his way into the heart and mind of many a lovely lass, like Alyce

  39. B.... L....

I guess I've heard virtually every one of his songs. Nothing's better than "Holly, Holy." This is smooth and pretty now, as it was then. I did "Platter Chatter" for the Newspaper for 5 years, many years ago, and although I liked the Rockers best, it was the Ballads that made me appreciate the singers. I met most of them, went to Newport for 4 years, watched Dylan go electric on a hot July night in 1965, but I always liked to hear Ian and Sylvia do "Nancy Whiskey" and "You Were on my Mind," which Ian wrote, I think. Thank you, Alyce, for the great, short trip back - the grass won't pay no mind!

  40. c.... r....

Hi..Alyce! Still enjoying your music...but where is..Play Me...???? This song makes my Heart soars!

  41. J.... ....

    Right On!!

  43. C.... M....

    Belíssima !!!

    C.... M....

I love this song so much by a great singer

  44. D.... N....

Did you really photoshop yourself into the picture at the end there, lol?

    D.... N....

That's princess Diana. No idea why she'd photo shop the princess into this tho unless its some kind of mad tribute😲😖🙄

  46. A.... V....

Glad you like it--and that's the kind of music Neil makes.  Beautiful - Alyce V

  47. c.... r....

  48. A.... V....

Neil writes beautiful lyric's - this one is especially lovely.  All his songs have great lyrics - he's a poet and a darn good one ...Thank you...Alyce

  49. G.... C....

A synesthesic song - I hear the flowers growing, so many times I used this phrase in my Portuguese classes, but I didn't know the song.

  50. G.... C....

Why did I take forty years to listen to this song?

  51. g.... v....

i like this original but i'm afraid i think the big E beats this. An awesome interpretation .

  52. t.... ....

I meant great song AND GREAT VIDEO. :)

  53. t.... ....

    Thanks, great song. :)

  54. A.... V....

Such a beautiful tribute to the artists who write these melodies and their ability to make us all feel moved and touched by their creations. Thank you so much for how you feel about these artists and the people who are moved by them. Like me.....Alyce V

  55. D.... A....

Hello Alyce, thank you, what you have done is an inspiration of the lyrics and melody that has so moved you. Any artist who share in anothers song pays homage to the artist and of course we all will have our favourite version but the song belongs to the artist who wrote it and the people who love it. Mr Diamond renders from his heart and consiousness and I thank him for sharing his gift. I am happy to share this with you, my sincere thanks to you Alyce.

  56. K.... S....

    Beautiful ... well done

  57. M.... ....

Mark Lindsay also did a fantastic version of it...

  61. R.... v....

Thanks Alyce for bringing up this beautiful song.

  62. M.... L....

Beautiful song and a wonderful post. I have covered many of his songs but my opinion is that nobody will ever sing them as good as Neil Diamond himself. Thank you. Mike L.

  63. 5.... ....

    You're very welcome!

  64. A.... V....

Thank you Jim - I enjoy making them.....

  65. J.... H....

    This is outstanding!

  66. A.... V....

Yes, you are right - there are many others who covered his songs all good ppl too. Thank you for you kind comment....Alyce V

  67. 5.... ....

It is testament to a great artist when someone like the king of rock and roll performs one of your songs like Elvis did of this song. The greatest singer/songwriter of the rock and roll era Neil Diamond doesn't mind having the king cover his song.

  68. A.... V....

    Thank you so much....

  69. A.... V....

Thank you Mr. Pauly -0 I worked hard on it....loll

  70. i.... p....

    J.... R....

    dam redub Elvis is second

  74. W.... F....

    Settled (:

  75. A.... V....

You know ppl I don't have to listen to either one of you, because I have my own opinions and those of hundreds of thousands who agree with me. So go argue on I don't give a fat rats ass about either one of you......

  76. W.... F....

Hell yeah I'm a Diamond fanatic (: No doubt Elvis was a legend, emphasis on the was however Neil is a living legend. Don't get me wrong, Elvis is the King and truly soulful as you say. Can't really judge a musician on how much pussy they smashed over their career although I guarantee you Neil had more than his fair share!

  77. W.... F....

Just a songwriter, huh? You're kidding, right? What planet are you living on?

  78. M.... M....

I LIKE ALL VERSIONS- SONG IS ABOUT MAKING LOVE IN THE GRASS

  79. A.... V....

Yes I have to agree with you Charlotte

  80. A.... V....

Neil wrote this song--it came in one continuous stream to him--he is a fantastic sing/song writer and he is alive.......

  81. L.... J....

Thank you Alyce. God must have known what was best for me and my early sweetheart. He knew we weren't right for each other for whatever reason. I drifted for many years through the rocks to the woman I'm married to now. My ship has considerable damage and patches! Looking back, I think I and the early girlfriend are each better off. But I wouldn't take anything for those sweet memories! LJ
By the way, Neil Diamond still did this song better!

  82. f.... ....

    I also prefer Elvis' version.

  83. A.... V....

I'm glad my video brought some romantic memories back to you, it does to me as well. I love this song -- too bad you didn't pursue your relationship with her.....thanks for your comment....Regards..Alyce V

  84. L.... J....

    Jannie,
I'm a guy and this song affects me the same way. The words are beautiful and Neil has the perfect voice. A sweet little blue-eyed blonde teen girl used to sing this song to me, and I can't recall how we broke up or why. She's a high school music teacher now. Alas! I can't help but wonder what would have happened if...

  85. L.... H....

    Mark Lindsay's is my favorite...

  86. A.... V....

Neil sang it better -- I too like Elvis -- but on this song Neil is far better......sorry

  87. M.... ....

Neil Diamond was good but sadly for him, king Elvis sang that song too.

  88. N.... K....

Classic. Written long before I was born...

  89. A.... V....

Yes I agree, he is a phenomenal person music-wise , and he has a wonderful personality, as well. It's almost like he gets his abilities from a higher order...... Far behind anything we could ever do ......

  90. r.... f....

Nice and sweet as always..Neil Diamond is wonderful, sing whatever he sing ... His songs are made and sung with the depths of his being, and the result is this: A true wonder ...

  91. W.... K....

    you are very right!

  92. T.... P....

    neil.best songwriter elvis best singer.

  93. A.... V....

Thank you Jannie - does the same to me....Have a great Sunday.....Alyce V

  94. W.... K....

Listen to Elvis presley singing this !

  95. A.... V....

Thank you for your nice comments - I discovered Neil in the late 70's and have not been able to forget his beautiful noise -- Seeing him at a concert is awesome---for a 71 yr old man he has surprising energy and fortitude........he thrives on his audience and we on him...so good, so good.Alyce V

  96. R.... A....

Just a lovely, touching piece. I hadn't heard it for decades, maybe even since 1970, until I heard it earlier this week. The words as Neil sings them are poignant, and the melody and instrumental music are at least as affecting to me. They combine to leave a lasting impression. No wonder I remembered the melody and bits of the lyrics from my high-school days 40+ years ago--it puzzles me why the song is rarely played these days.

  97. J.... C....

I love this song! The best version of this is on HAN album!!

  98. A.... V....

Just saw him at Jones Beach Nikon Theater--he was awesome-his vim and vigor is far more than you see on these videos - I wrote a review saying that he is the consumate singer he caresses the audience with his voice and mannerisms. For a 71 year old man - he is unstoppable when it comes to a concert...I loved it immensely---
    Thank you-for you nice comment - Have a lovely evening....Alyce V.......
