Nazareth - 1692 (Glen Coe Massacre) Lyrics

Mist upon the hill can remember murder,
Mist upon the hill that once flowed with blood,
Helped to cover up an approaching army,
Hid the killing lust in the eyes of men.

Sitting by the fire was a sentry sleeping,
Rolled up in their beds were children that play,
Unsuspecting what was to fall upon them,
None of them would see the dawn next day.

Bloody were the blades that fell on children,
Hate the blinding light tried to kill a name,
The mountains only know all the souls that died there,
Glen Coe from that day can recall the shame.

The quiet of the night never gave them warning,
The silence of the hills wouldn't let them know,
They'd never rise again on a mist filled morning,
Never see the sunrise above Glen Coe.

Nazareth 1692 (Glen Coe Massacre) Comments

Two brothers, John and Charles McAllister fled to Belfast and I am descended from one of them. Just recorded my version of the old song but amended it to suit my taste. I have added a coda with an ending hail as part of my revision. I grew up and played music with some Campbells back in Ireland. He was manipulated and then disowned by the King who had used him. My producer and I discussed the "following orders" that the soldiery had to face and it is clear that many of them refused to kill or shot to miss. Check out this film on Utube. It's worth a watch. https://binged.it/2Vi3Dne

You do know that most McAllister's ARE Macdoanlds, a branch of Clan Donald like Clanranald, Glencoe, Sleat, Glengarry et al.

@Weary Wanderer yep. They are a subset of the clan and have the same motto - Per Mare Per Terram. My wife uses this saying a lot in our household as in "this is a land and sea job". All our kids use the expression.

Each time I visit, it brings tears to my eyes. Must have been a McDonald in a previous life...

  4. h.... ....

    This endures.

The Stewart clan took the ones who survived into their homes, giving them shelter, protection, clothing, food and medical attention at great risk to their own safety(much like the MacDonalds did for the Campbells.

no conozco la historia,  pero amo nazareth

  7. h.... ....

My wife is a McDonald.  It is part of her family's heritage.  It is told to each generation.  It is an injustice that has not been healed and so endures.

    h.... ....

    the Campbells should beg forgiveness

My wife, a McDonald, remembers it to this day. This endures.

It also requires us to forgive,

When I first entered Highlands, i felt like heaven....Scotland is simply beautiful and Glencoe is awesome..I recently learned about the massacre and feel sorry for those lost their lives. I might not understand scottish people speaking english (blame me being poor in listening) but I love scottish music, and music don't need a language, it's a language itself.

@Roggieddgie Maybe. But I have appreciated very much it for about 30 years..

  14. C.... T....

my husband got me hooked on nazareth . this is one of my favorite songs.

  15. S.... ....

@Roggiedodgie It's based on a true event - the 1692 slaughter of members of the MacDonald clan. I guess the band, being Scottish, felt a liking for it...

  16. R.... ....

I like Nazareth- including Exercises, but this is a strange song.
