How does Matt messes up his part?? Mundane Pixels Saw them in Vancouver a couple months ago, it was the best concert I’d been to. I think it had more to do with the sound stage here.

valenloriellius saw them at Hyde Park and I have to say the older stuff stood out to me a lot more, especially guitar-wise. Still enjoyed the new stuff as well though!

I adore this band and am seeing them two days running in December traveling from the UK to Germany to do so.......but just cannot get in to this song. I see that it's original but don't agree with the "best National song in ten years" reviews I read. It's too genius for me.

I’m afraid The National are a ‘studio’ band; Matt just cannot replicate his recorded voice when singing live. I should note that I am a fan however, and have been since Alligator. I pre-ordered their latest album only to be rather disappointed by it however. In this modern world where live playing is so important, The National just can’t produce the high quality some of their peers can (Sufjan Stevens, St Vincent, Sharon Van Ethan, First Aid Kit etc).

The National are one of those bands I haven't completely delved into, but love alot of their tracks. Probably going to buy this new album and the Alligator one to get me started

This song should never be broadcast as a live performance! Works well enough as an album track. However It’s far to repetitive and lacks the kind of song writing the National have been reknowned for.

Dear fans of The National - while I struggle with this album, I did see this tour live - and this isn't great. Who is the 3rd female singer and where/when/why did she pop up?

She’s Clive Owen’s daughter. The one on the left is Bryce Dessner’s wife. Remember, it’s not what you know...

@joeg19 It's been Mina Tindle (Pauline) and Kate Stables singing the whole tour (live, the record has different female vocals - you know this). I was thrown with the third singer - with good reason! Thanks!

Matt is one of the best vocalists alive imo, this performance wasn't a good example of his skill. Check out other performances

Ditto. When I saw them live last month this was the one track that sounds much better on the album. They could have gone with Quiet Light, Oblivions, or Hey Rosey and it would have made more sense.

Bryan seems intentionally recessed into shadow.

They may have needed to put those blankets around Bryan D. to get a clean mix by isolating the drums. Note that they had three drummers on that track - Ben Lanz, their trombonist/2nd-keyboardist, was also playing drums - so balancing all three would have been tricky if they were bleeding into each others' mics.

@Baribrotzer If that is the case I guess I'll blame the song choice. If you have to sacrifice the showtime of one of your band's members just so you can play the tune properly perhaps it's too much of a bother for a tv show

Their live performances of this song usually do. I think the point is that the women overpower the selfishness of Matt's character in the song. It's a weird song to play for a general TV audience. It actually is a great performance in person. Saw them back in July.

This one was the unexpected highlight the last time I saw them live. Lush layers and tantalising crescendos just out of reach, my ears didn't know where to look next.

This song not translate to a one-shot spotlight alone on TV. It was a mess. The NY show with the youth choir was phenomenal.

Those women aren't The National! I'm the 51st viewer of this video too...

They are esteemed musicians in and of themselves that were major contributors to The National's latest album I Am Easy To Find, critical cogs in the latest iteration from the band. Also they've been touring with the band as crucial members of their current tour. For any reasonable purpose, they are indeed "The National" at this time alongside Dessner, Berninger, and the rest.

Sad to see John Lennon doesn't drum for them anymore.

@Jaromir Intercityfirm You can hear that he's there. He has a distinctive sound, no mistaking it. I've seen them live 7 times and at least 2 of those performances, he was tucked away and barely visible, so I think it's his choice.
