Nathanson, Matt - Romeo And Juliet Lyrics

A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like "you and me babe, how about it?"

Juliet says "hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack"
He's underneath the window she's singing "hey la my boyfriend's back
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that"
Anyway what you gonna do about it?

Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet that you exploded into my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?
Juliet

Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver
You can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers
And the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah
Now you just say "oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him"

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die"
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?
Juliet

I can't do the talk, like the talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song, like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything, but I'll do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat and the bad company
Now all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?
Juliet

A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convinient streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like "you and me babe, how about it?"

"You and me babe, how about it?"

I miss the Indigo Girls. RIP 90's

  6. M.... ....

I don't understand why people keep citing The Killers/Dire Straits, when someone does a cover of a song and puts it on Youtube everyone doesn't go "Derp and The Herberbs" did that song first!

  7. K.... Q....

Dire Straits and Killers And Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris have done covers Mark is a Dire Strait as you all know. Really doesn't warrant the term "Reject"!

I've heard all the covers and the original, but honestly, I prefer Matt's version. I just think the strumming pattern and the way it's sung matches the song much more. The emotion that I feel with this version is so much deeper than any other the others. He did such a great rendition of it and it's one of my favorite songs.

  14. K.... L....

love his version of it. But by God, he shows up Mark Knopfler for the wonderful songwriter that he is. Dire Straits are fantastic.

  25. E.... G....

    dire straits

  26. k.... ....

"If I fuck it up, it's cool. That's art." LOL, love him. And this song! <3

  27. t.... ....

This sounds like it's in between The Killers version and Edwin McCain's version, but I still like (in order) 1) The Killers 2) Edwin McCain 3) Matt Nathanson and lastly Dire Straits

  28. r.... ....

i think that whatever you first encounter tends to be what you like best in any category - think about when they make books into movies. that said, i encountered the indigo girls version of this song first and it's still the most amazing to me. interestingly, i saw matt nathanson open for the indigo girls last week. great show....

  29. K.... C....

Yeah I heard this before the original, without even being aware that this wasn't the original. I like it much more...as angelsdleadyou said its much more heart wrenching, made to make you cry rather than laugh...I'm also very partial to matt nathanson...

  30. M.... C....

Nothing is like Mark Knopfler but yeah this is good

  31. M.... ....

I still prefer Steve Knightley's version, but this is much better than The Killers version in my opinion.

  32. o.... ....
