Nat King Cole - When Sunny Gets Blue Lyrics

When Sunny gets blue, her eyes get gray and cloudy
Then the rain begins to fall, pitter-patter, pitter-patter
Love is gone, what can matter
No sweet lover man comes to call

When Sunny gets blue, she breaths a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees
Wind that sets the leaves to swaying
Like some violin is playing strange and haunting melodies

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style
Somehow she's not the same

But memories will fade and pretty dreams will rise up
Where her other dreams fell through
Hurry new love, hurry here, to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style
Somehow she's not the same

Hurry new love, hurry here, to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

One of my all time favorite albums. When I was a little girl, I used to try to imitate Nat King Cole's smooth as silk voice..."What does it matter if you're rich or your poor......Love is Thing" Gorgeous lyrics

This was one of the "aphrodisiac songs" that Johnny Mathis recorded when I was in high school ('60-'63), but I have to say that I prefer "The King's" version much more. No one, that I know of, has had a voice or his stylings to match since he passed. Thanks, and RIP, Nat.

If you love this song, then you believe in love. I first heard Nat's version of "When Sunny Gets Blue" on an ordinary afternoon in 1967 when I was 12 years old. It has always stayed with me. It's perfect.

There was a song By Nat King Cole that I heard once almost 20 years ago "MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE I LOVE YOU TOO MUCH". Thanks to You Tube, I got the title and listened to the song.

@Terence Boris ...The media did that.

  21. K.... B....

Compare all of today's digital cut-patch editing, auto-tune and the like with the Capitol all-in-one take with full orchestra and vocalist before LIVE mikes in a single mono mix...Capitol Studios wins EVERY TIME!! Listen to the luscious, full mono track that puts much stereo to shame!

Quite amazing that this classic from Marvin Fisher and Jack Segal is as good now as when they created it in 1946.
The best music, such as this, never seems to sound outdated.

Something grand to be said also about the arrangement. This, I think, more than any other is the version I remember most. Playing on our record player with the lights turned down. Johnny Mathis "Chances Are"
(He also did a noteworthy cover of this song) . Nat was a top recording artist and was given the best musicians to play, arrange and compose. Listen to the strings (for example) on the 2nd verse, where he says "winds that set the trees to swaying". That shows creativity and use of the instruments beyong notes and rhythem. The engineers and producers really showed thear craft and made this song one that has stood up for so many years as the standard. Now Kenny Rankin does an amazing takeoff (also a favorite) in his jazz rendition, but you have to know the original to see and appreciate where he takes lisence with the music

    n.... ....

+nakedhombre7 Thanks for the K. Rankin props. I also like Mel Torme's version. Spare (it's just self-accompanied on piano), but he was an expressive vocalist. I get on a kick for this song and 'Round Midnight every so often and I'm amazed at what people are able to do with these two tunes.

    n.... ....

um Johnny Mathis didn't cover it He was the ORIGINAL recording, Nat came after only by a few months or so tho

    n.... ....

nakedhombre7 This is my favorite Nat KC album. The orchestration behind the voice is perfect.

Why do artists like this one have to die so young?    Why?    When I think of the shitty people padding around the Earth, walking between the raindrops, living forever, and this guy, and Otis, and Buddy, and Jimi, and Freddie, and Jim, Randy, Valens, Janis, Keith, and Eddie, and Whitney, and Amy, Lennon, Sadat, Belushi, ......

    s.... ....

@shuroom57 Only the good die young. Maybe the kind of beauty they brought, shared and left here was needed somewhere else.

Each and Every word completely distinct and understandable - Not like too much of today's music - Just a great talent and very hard to believe that he has been gone just about 50 years now.  They just don't make them like the Great Nat King Cole anymore.  We may never ever see the likes of him again.

  38. G.... S....

    One of the greatest!

  39. T.... A....

This song is so very special to me. My mother sang it to me from the time I was born until her last day with me. I have carried on the tradition with my 3 daughters. It is part of my soul and I pray they will rock and sing to their children as well.

  40. e.... m....

  60. e.... ....

Johnny Mathis also did this song. My parents both had wedding bands in the late 60's and 70's, and they played this tune. I whistle it still after all these years.

  61. J.... ....

@TOMBANCROFT Thank You so much Tom for sharing! Appreciate your research :)))

  62. T.... ....

@jazzysclassicjazz Further investigation reveals that this song was recorded by Capitol in December 1956 and it was recorded on mono as well as three track stereo. Perhaps this could account for the two different versions which exist. This version is of course the three track stereo one.

TOMBANCROFT Thank You 🌷 💟 for all the great information

  64. T.... ....

Somewhere out there is a recording of this song with a simpler backing. This version with the beautiful string arrangement by Gordon Jenkins is the most popular. It is possible that the earlier one was an out-take from one of his TV shows, which are ofetn found on cut price compilations.

  65. J.... ....

@TOMBANCROFT You have an great ear to detect this...Is the one you are familiar with on yt?

  66. T.... ....

I have a version on a budget label compilation album released here in the UK. I have dug the album out and played the track for the first time in years. It sounds really different from the version on "Love Is The Thing" album (which was stereo). It is a mono recording and listening closely, it seems to be slightly speeded up. I now think it is the same version which was recorded in 1956, but it has been doctored and sounds older.

  67. J.... ....

@TOMBANCROFT Do you know what album that is from? Was it with the King Cole Trio?

  68. T.... ....

This was the second version of this recorded by Nat. His first version was recorded in his younger days. Both are superb.

  69. J.... ....
