Nash, Graham - Military Madness Lyrics

In an upstairs room in Blackpool
By the side of a Northern Sea
The army had my father
And my mother was having me

Military madness
Was killing my country
Solitary sadness
Comes over me

And after the school was over
And I moved to the other side
I found another country
But I never lost my pride

Military madness
Was killing the country
Solitary sadness
Creeps over me

And after the wars are over
And the body count is finally filed
I hope that man discovers
What's driving the people wild

Military madness
Is killing your country
So much sadness
Between you and me

War, war, war
War, war, war

Graham & I are pals ....... from our Marin County, CA days! * Cav *

  2. M.... M....

Don't kid yourself. Men must always be at war. Real or imagined. Without some kind of competition, physical or otherwise, humans become lazy and stagnant.

  3. A.... M....

Resonates more than ever .... When will we learn :(

  4. M.... B....

It's Veterans Day. Please remember it is civilian leadership that can go mad & call out the military. Protesters took it out on the Rank & File during Viet Nam. I'm glad folks are more enlightened today.

  5. b.... m....

Sounds like Stephen Stills on wah-wah guitar.

  6. D.... T....

    Thank Mr Nash

  7. D.... F....

Hats off to guitarist Dave Mason.

  12. B.... S....

My brother played this in his old CJ-5 jeep when I was a kid. Still love it to this day

  13. A.... m....

    Brilliant !

  14. Q.... ....

Just had a good cry with a social worker about this subject. I starting counseling again. Gotta find to a way to deal with the fact the county I have loved for so long (the U.S.A.) "has been turned over to gangsters and prostitutes" and dealing with the Forever War and concentration camps that are abusing children and their families in mass. Everyone with a heart and a mind owns the rights to this song. I believe even Mr. Nash might agree even though the head Vampire of the RIAA has said, "We will make the only music you heard to free is when birds sing.

  15. M.... d....

You could combine the 20 most popular artist today and they wouldn't equal the talent this man has

  16. M.... A....

    Live up this song...!!!!

  17. N.... m....

U would think after countless wars we would leant put we haven't so this song still means something today in 2019 as it did when it was written.Great song

  20. D.... ....

One of my FAV G Nash songs. Is he Sir Graham Nash? Met him in Kansas City a few years ago at his book signing.

  22. C.... N....

Fast forward to the 21st century
And what did these young men die for in America's longest war?

  23. j.... i....

Vietnam was a horrible time.....I will never forget that scene ever....young kids can't believe the stories i tell them.

  24. R.... C....

  39. D.... D....

I have loved this song for so long! When I was a very young girl my besties and I would play this song over over again everyday and sing. First time playing this song in years and i sang right along like it was yesterday. Funny how much time has past but this song still has alot of meaning today!

  42. A.... S....

First time hearing this — amazing!!!

  43. r.... ....

I remember seeing a live footage taken after 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan. They partly changed the lyrics [something like "I hope G.W Bush discovers what's driving the people wild"] and the crowd booed them.... Very sad!

  44. m.... p....

in fact it makes mr really sad cause he lived in military toad - and i was jealous because his girlfriend was washhing his hair and putting strawbrttiess and goodness what else -- on a more sreious note amyone who wants to contact me i ve suddenky reakised the importance of this

  47. D.... ....

I was a front row extra in Mr. Nash's MTV video (Innocent Eyes) with John Ritter (rip) I didn't get a chance to tell him how much MM meant to me and many others serving in 70's. The (mtv) IE shooting in Van Nuy's at AA studio was cool. I told him later on his Web site. Song still same message.

    D.... ....

    deakinstruction..so i heard.

  48. J.... B....

without war, no peace, without darkness, no light, without ugly, no beautiful......

    J.... B....

Only if you live in a world with those dichotomies. Light and darkness are governed by the laws of physics. The others are man made maleable and ultimately subjective. So you argument is without merit. Peace and more peace. Beauty and more beauty. That's what humanity should aim for.

  49. S.... R....

How about Immigration Man. An even more topical song by Gram!

colin u right send in the politicians to fight wars

  55. C.... ....

In all honesty ... Military madness don't kill counties. It is the bloody Govt's and Politicians that are killing the countries
The Military is sent in to try and clean up the mess they started ...... then it is the soldiers who have to live with the horrors as the Govt that sent them to war do not give a fuck when the soldiers return

    C.... ....

"Clean the mess they started" with bombs and machine guns?

    C.... ....

    Well said

  56. D.... ....

Timeless, I was 1st turned onto this: 1972, U.S Army (Germany) Met Mr. Nash, years later (I was xtra in mtv vid 'Innocent Eyes' featuring the late great John Ritter.) I took the opportunity to thank both of them and Mr. Nash especially for This album to help me get through all the Military BS.

The War machine is alive and well In the United States and around the world. We no longer hear songs of protest or songs for peace. We're all geared up to fight just as we were at the beginning of the Civil War in the United States. It's all fine and well until you find out first had what war really is. Then it's too late. Peace never had a chance.

    J.... F....

I too love this song. However you must understand that the only chance peace has is to be an armed defender who can keep off an armed opponent. I wish the world was different but this is the case.

    J.... F....

    'The military industrial complex

    J.... F....

@Sil Marillian and? You had your chance to support Ron Paul, who would have gotten ridof it and developed a wicked strong military that would protect us and not kill people in the interest of multi national corporations. Obama did not do that. Oh so Texan Georgie Bush did not do that, Trump will not do that. So bitch all you want but we had a chance do that but the intelligent retards who run this country said no. Oh and Paul would have bitch slapped the police state as well.

    J.... F....

@Charles Yuditsky I live in Australia remote from US politics but on the net I follow what is happening geo politically

  58. M.... W....

As true today as it was then. Pity that we really never learn anything and just keep on keeping on.

  59. M.... m....

I marched in more than a few anti-war events during the 1960s I had hope this song would help in ending wars everywhere but there is to much money to make for the Government and we know how much the Government LOVES BLOOD MONEY.....

    M.... m....

    Mike mitchell
    It goes deeper than money.
It's mainly sociopaths and psychopaths who feel inadequate and therefore try to manipulate and dominate others.
If it's not war, then it's religious fanaticism, street gangs, socialism, politikal korrektness.....

  60. L.... H....

If I listen to the song it brings back memories of my friends being drafted off I enlisted little did I know what I was getting in for and lost a many a good friend songs like this bring tears to my eyes because it was a worthless War that we should have never got into and now we have North Korea and let me tell you something just like Sodom Hussein's Army that gave up ever so quick when they saw are Abrams Tanks come in so well North Korea the soldiers are treated so bad and fed so poorly and brainwashed that that would give up so quick was afraid of he knows how poorly he treats his troops I've been reading that they are so weak when they do get to go home and rest that they're waiting on hand and foot by their families because they can't even stand up and walk there's no food there for them and they have to join the military at a young age and look at Vietnam now it's a Turf attraction they love it they love us then they treat us like s*** when we were then casualties of War are always going to be collateral damage is inevitable so I just want to say hug your brother hug your sisters hug your neighbors and try to get along one of the worst sins in the Bible is love thy neighbor and I find that one of the hardest things for me to overcome I live in a cesspool of a state Florida and believe me you hardly hear English spoke see the Puerto Rican Spanish or Hindu a Muslim it's I want to get out of this country with waves peace to all you brothers and sisters

  64. b.... C....

Notice that songs of today aren't like back then, protesting war, asking for peace, or the slide to a 'New Revolution?' Kingston Trio, "Where have all the flowers gone?' New Christi Ministrals; 'Eve of destruction...' And count 'em.., many more

    love this song

  75. m.... ....

Although this is referencing WWII, it's applicable to Viet Nam & scores of others. Graham Nash (& CS&Y) were visionaries. But no one listens when it comes to the war machine...& the bottom line is always the God of Money. I love my country (U.S.) but it's still dying a slow, agonizing death from our own Military Madness disease.

    m.... ....

The sad fact is that if the U.S isn't constantly involved in "Military Madness", then the economy would completely fold. That is where the vast majority of their income is tied up in. That and pharmaceuticals/meds market which is just as dark.

Graham, When the whores just can't seem to reach the puppies . . . they put them (the puppies) into the military to knock them around some.  And they make them stay together in the barracks so that they get sick of each other and begin to look at life like mad dogs.  THEN when they get their weekend pass and the scheming 'lucky day' meets up with him.  GLORY BE!  I must be in love!  No time for sergeants!  Or God, either!

Great song - have been listening for many years. Graham Nash xxx

  81. B.... ....

much better live. Still nice song

  82. R.... R....

Stop the tea party asshgole liars.

  83. a.... ....

by "found another country" does he mean Canada? : )... though pride can a good thing to have, it's also so often expressed as "exceptionalism"

    a.... ....

As mentioned in this song, he's from Blackpool (in England), so the country he moved to was the USA.

    a.... ....

@Dale Street Studios Missed that. I figured the song was about Vietnam because it's obviously from the 70s. It was in fact released in '71. However, if the song is only about WWII than moving to US is not that much of a condemnation of the war. I checked his birth date and he was already born when the US entered. So it seems that move was more about evading the danger of the German bombing. That's why I was hoping the song was about Vietnam because it fits a "pacifist" narrative a little better but I'm sure Vietnam played some role in the song. It was released close to the height of protests. Just too bad it wasn't more explicit.

    a.... ....

The song is about Vietnam, he was born in Blackpool during the war when his father died (I guess), and them "after he finished school" he moved to the USA (after he left the Hollies) and found another country with the same problems as his, a country obsessed with war.

    a.... ....

+degree7 It is also an allegory relating to interpersonal entanglements.

  84. D.... M....

    My favorite Nash song.

  85. W.... H....

I still think this Album never did as good as it should. My favourite tune is Simple Man.

    W.... H....

wendy heath..i don't know how high this album charted but this song got heavy airplay.

  86. J.... F....

This song is more relevant now than it was in it's day. People are ready to send their kids off to die on foreign soil in the name of freedom even though freedom is the last thing for we are fighting. It's much easier to support war from afar than it is to actually go and fight in one.

  87. B.... S....

the lyrics are good but its the music that gets me with this track

  88. r.... w....

    it says it all

  89. R.... ....

    I love this song!!!

  90. s.... ....

can also substitute the words "military madness" with alcohol and drugs" are killing my country.

    s.... ....

Alcohol and drugs are a symptom of the underlying disease

  91. s.... ....

this is an ordinary song with a powerful message. made powerful by the truth it speaks.

  92. j.... p....

some things do not change.....listen to the words......true....

  93. D.... R....

be flattered they loved it that much!

  94. g.... ....

    Shitty song

  95. c.... ....

This is the definitive song about WAR. After the wars are over and the body count is finally filed.
This is a really sad statement.

  96. B.... S....

The rule as applied to Albums (and books) is this: Don't loan it to anyone if you're not willing to give it to them.

  97. C.... L....

they will never change their ways. the war machine pumps billions into the corporate pigs' pockets. it will never stop.

  98. J.... B....

Hey Deanna, thanks for turning me on to this album back in 78!

  99. K.... W....

Out of nowhere, this song kept coming to me in my sleep last night. Had to listen to it again. Couldn't be more true today.

  100. J.... S....

Released at the time my close friends were in Viet Nam and I was sweating it. A war that had good intentions but went all for naught.
