Nas - War Lyrics
[Chorus - singing]
There's a war in the streets tonight
And nobody's really feelin' alright
I got a blunt for a chronic, a juice for my tonic
I know now that I'm feelin' right if it goes down
And I know it's not my time to go now
'Cause God's got my back in this showdown
So I know we'll be alright
[Nas]
Yeah, Brooks Brothers overcoat, know the ropes, smooth is holdin' those
Briefcases, silk ties, slick as them older folks
Silver fo'-fo', got no,
My chauffer driver just left some of my colleagues smokin' that Cali
Caught a glimpse of myself in the Barney's shop window
Got an office on Broadway, business in Jamaica
Tell my daughter try the hardest so the best schools'll take her
And I'm late to a dite with my wife, I realize
I stopped to shop, had to get her some type surprise
And I'm walkin' through it, chaos is all around me
But God got me, no fear, through the fire pride stop
[Chorus - singing]
There's a war in the streets tonight
And all this drama's got me feelin' uptight
I don't know what I'll do if I don't see my boo
'Cause she's standin' on the corner of Linden Boulevard
Holding our baby in her baby in her arms
So hold on, your daddy's in sight
[Nas]
Yeah, Nine-four, Destiny opens her eyes
For the first time, praise God, baby mom's cryin'
Planned to be a strong black family
But we both were too young, too strung, too much flashin'
New come, I caught verbal assassin runnin' with
Nothin' but the worst type, worst fight
But we brought my baby home the first night
Cursed like sailors, burst out the crib
Ragin' in my new car bought from entertainment
Champaign and gainin' clout fast, whiplash
Did this bitch just pass in the club pugged up, stupid ass
Grabbed her by the pony tail, "never disrespect me"
I'm a street vet, regret the sex, but not Desi
Moved back to your grandma, I'm single, the land's mine
She keeps the Benz, I'm all in the streets again
Squeezin' the pen, released again, chart toppers,
Hard-bottoms blessed the feet, now less baby mom's problems
New woman, she's great, this a different world,
Checkin' out my wife's chemistry with my little girl
It's so amazin' playin', life is so crazy
I've grown up the thankful for lessons God gave me
[Chorus - singing]
There's a war in the streets tonight
And nobody's really feelin' alright
I got a blunt for a chronic, a juice for my tonic
I know now that I'm feelin' right if it goes down
'Cause my third eye sees the lowdown
And I know it's not my time to go now
'Cause God's got my back in this showdown
So I know we'll be alright

Once people grow up and mature they'll look back and see how Nas was writing our reality. His music is life and experiences to which many of us share.

DJ Tim space King One of his best. I feel you, Holiday Christmas shit.
ANUBIS WAS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
one of my favorite songs ever. For some reason it has a holiday feel to it. love it.
I remember having this double CD and I always past this song because I always listen to the intro, American Way, Sekou Story, Suicide Bounce and Remember the Times with a couple of other songs like Can We Have a Moment. I never took the time and really appreciate this song here. This is the type of song that makes you look at your family, have a can of beer, think of your parents & your childhood and be like, "Yeah, I'm good". I'm listening to this song like four times straight already. Nostalgic moment.
God's got my back in this showdown!
...I love this song!
Word stupid af videos saying Nas illuminati gtfoh this dude been rhyming about God since illmatic. Albeit the snuff Jesus was a bit much in his intro but it got attention and he was 17 when he penned that.
Incangeneral 👍

I ignored this when I bought the album. (Ignorant stage). Now that I got a wife and daughter, it became my theme music. 10 year later.
Smoothe as hall and Oates. Silk Black tie like the older folks. Caught my fathers reflection creeping. Bought my wife a gift.
Wow I live that. I work and protect mine, hard body. Let me live and I let you be.
Andre L it was grown folk rap way before its time so ppl didn't understand it....it not till he tried it again with life is good ppl got it
Kwame Chikuyu Sun always been light yrs ahead of the game. Like someone said, Nas had the mind of a 30 yr old in late teens.

Hey Nas, can we have just one last retirement album? there's a lot of bullshit on the radio these days. I long for classics like this.
he making 2 albums lost tapes 2 and another this year
too bad I can't find this one as an instrumental. This is TOO SMOOTH! Then the beat at the end just sneaks up on ya.
I forgot how nice this track was until it came up on the iPod. Driving in my car after a rain storm cleared and the sun came out...I played it 3 times and pulled up to my local Albertsons coincidentally bumping the part where Keon is singing. I love this track.
One of Nas alltime greats...Classic

Love this track. Might be my favorite on the whole album. Shout out to whoever made the beat and Keon Bruce on the vocals.
@Fairplay Terrific Oh how did you know my taste in music? Not offended just curious.
But no I haven't listened to any of those artists but I have heard of The Foreign Exchange. I heard Phonte from Little Brother is the main singer for that group.
@lifestraight Yeah he is. I guess you can say he was Drake before Drake was Drake lol Phonte doesn't get enough credit as a vocalist that dude can carry a tune. Plus his rapping is overlooked not to mention his ear for Phenomenal instrumentals. Nicolay is the man behind the boards slept on Big Time.
Fairplay Terrific Ok gotchu. I should check out more of their stuff.
@Fairplay Terrific Zo! Is dope. Ya'll should check out his track Coffee Mist, got like a feel good neo soul, R&B, jazz vibe to it.
Mario Garcia I Know About Zo! He's Talented. Him And Nicolay Compliments Phonte Besides 9th Wonder Like No One Else....
