Nancy Sinatra - One For My Baby (And One More For The Road) Lyrics

It's quarter to three
There's no one in the place except you and me
So set 'em up, Joe
I've got a little story you ought to know

We're drinking, my friend
To the end of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

Well, I know the routine
So put another nickel in the machine
I'm feeling so bad
I wish you'd make the music dreamy and sad

Could tell you a lot
But you've got to be true to your code
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

You'd never know it but, buddy, I'm a kind of poet
And I've got a lot of things to say
And when I'm gloomy, you simply gotta listen to me
Until it's talked away

Well, that's how it goes
And Joe, I know you're getting anxious to close
So thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind my bending your ear

This torch that I've found
Gotta be drowned or it's gonna explode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
That long, long road

    He does this so effortlessly

  2. h.... ....

Completely in character and in the moment. Like watching a scene from a movie. Makes me think he could have been a great director. I found that he did in fact direct one film.

This June, 1962 concert in London during a world tour is the best live concert video of Sinatra in his vocal prime. He was the greatest singer in the English language at this point. Nobody could match his expression.

You know, this shows why Sinatra was such a talent. The guy could act. You can hear any number of people who can technically sing this song about as well as he could, maybe even better in some rare and exceptional cases. The song doesn’t have a huge range or demand a lot of dynamic contrast. This song requires you to be able to act and deliver these lines to an audience as if it was just you and the bartender. You don’t get the full experience just by listening to this. You have to watch. Even a gesture as simple as rubbing his face, or looking down at his cigarette must be perfectly timed to land and create an emotional reaction in the audience that creates the illusion that this is real. It’s not just a song, and it wasn’t rehearsed. I’m not sure we’ll ever see mainstream musicians accomplish this level of performance ever again, and that really makes me sad.

I remember when I was younger, I was soul searching, going around the western US and doing odd jobs here and there, such as a bouncer, debt collector and even a private eye. Anyway I ended up in this small town in Nevada. I met this guy who was kind of the sheriff of the town. He and his friend were the kind of the protectors of this town, going out to exterminate pests and help out the people there. He was a veteran and had served as a sniper for the army, and his buddy helped spot him on missions, and after multiple tours with each other they settled down in the town. The guy was very hard pressed, very un-emotional, I later found out from his friend that the guy had seen some shit while serving, and so he kept his emotions very well hidden After talking to him he said that his wife had disappeared, and he wanted me to look into it, since I mentioned I used to be a private eye. Everyone else said that she had just packed up and left but no one knew for sure. I did some snooping and found out that there was a woman in town who had in fact kidnapped and sold her off to this cult in the mountains. I was shocked and knew what I had to do. So I found the wretched woman who sold her and asked her to come with me to the edge of town. She compiled and when we got there I put a red beret on my head. Then, suddenly BAM, the guy blew up her head with a sniper rifle from his position in the mouth of a giant T-Rex statue. After that he agreed to tag along with me, as he didn't feel welcome in his town anymore. So for a really long time me and him went all across the Mojave wasteland, wishing for nuclear winter.

In 1956 I was a kid still living in Paris.I sat on a corner watching all these German tanks going down my rue, they were filming a movie.Frank sat next to me and said "hey kid it can't be that bad."Then he stood up , put his hand in his pocket and handed me a hundred dollar bill .He just tipped his hat and winked .I didn't no enough English to say how much it ment to a poor kid like me. 🇫🇷. Class , I'LL never forget him.

  65. A.... L....

his phrasing, his delivery, the whole performance - a supreme master of the art and an actor/singer extraordinaire. very reminiscent of jacques brel and tom waits in the way his character becomes the song and vice versa.

Even FS thought his performance on Ist June 1962 at the RFH was special.

The midnight concert was utterly compelling, and he had the audience eating out of his hand for
    ninety glorious minutes.

The DVD of that show shows him at the very peak of his powers.
No wonder Miles, Amy, Basie, Harry Connick Jnr, BB King and Iggy Pop rated him so highly.

these kind of songs is what makes a heartbreak a little bit more bittersweet. helps you heal the wounds of an unrequited love, even when you thought it wouldn't have worked.

Frank was reciting in this song, he wasn't singing.

the road is still too long, if you ask me.

As a 16 year old teenager in 1959 I played Frank non stop full blast when my parents were away in Spain and now as a 77 year old I still play Frank on my lovely vinyl record player. I have decided this version will be played at my funeral as it is sheer perfection . Also my late husband Norman Foley bore a remarkable physical resemblance to Frank. Spooky or what!

  91. A.... T....

    He's just....... so cool.
