My Brightest Diamond - The Robin's Jar Lyrics

Once we found a robin
In our backyard
It was already dead
But we were so sure
That things weren't gone too far

So we prayed to God above
That He'd bring it back to us
And we put it in a jar
And waited
and waited

But mama made us bury it
Mama made us bury it
In the backyard

I wished to be just like my best friend
She was the brightest star in the room
Yeah but we didn't know what we had

With the world pressing in
On her backyard
She fell in backwards
She fell in backwards

With the world pressing in
On her backyard
She fell in backwards

We prayed to God above
That He'd bring her back to us
So we put her in a box
We put her in a box
And waited
For something to happen
But nothing happened

Mama made me bury her
Mama made me bury her
Mama made me bury her
in the backyard

can someone explain the lyrics? or their interpretation maybe?

Two little girls finds a Robin one day. They out him in a jar, to rescue him but he's dead. Mom tells them "burry it" this is their first experience of death as an innocent child. One day, her best friend who she looks up to, she thinks she's the brightest star gets sick and die. They put her in a coffin. And they wait during ceremony. Just like the time when she learned about death with Robin. Her friend is gone, who was there with her at her hardest time. They burry her. She has to move on, forget about her now to move with her life. And that's it. It's just a terrible emotion to express. This song makes me cry every time. Because I had a best friend who was the brightest star and I lost her. It breaks my heart everytime I remember her. The grief just doesn't go away somehow. I guess holding onto memories is something I'm still so attached to even though it excruciatingly painful to carry around. It's a lump in my throat.

Yeah. It's the best thing I've heard all year. I'm sad I didn't know about it when it first came out, but I was still listening to pop radio in 2006. I wasn't ready yet.

A lot can happen in 3 years...
