This song is a parody about the Olympic Games, it is written for. It reflects the immense will to get better, the become the best; its madness. I don’t think the message of the song is about the motivation of getting better, it’s about its insanity: athletes must get stronger, faster, more agile than the human body allows.

Take a look at the song: it goes through five different keys, Matt and other vocals have to sing higher and higher until it reaches insane high notes (especially Matt), the breathless “ha, ha”, the heavy guitar solos, in some parts the guitar and the harmonies represent the hurdles of hurdling, and lyrics also reflects the sheer madness.

I think the song is a critique that can be understood in the contrary, otherwise the song wouldn’t have been allowed to be played there in London , I guess.

Absolutely, your interpretation is also in line with the whole album concept of The 2nd Law.

Commenters here before me totally missed the point of these lyrics. If you've listened to even the most mainstream Muse songs, you'd know that these lyrics are sarcastic!

Life isn't a race. There's nothing to win. The only people that feel the need to reveal their strength to the whole human race are those people that want to control you. It's the same power hungry people that keep us in chains that think and act like this.

This song is awesome because it's an official Olympics 2012 song and everyone thinks it's a rah-rah "I'm gonna win!!" triumph of athletes song, but it isn't. It isn't at all. It's making fun of the people who think life is a race and they have to win, at all costs, at the expense of everyone else.

This song is genius. It's a message in disguise and hardly anyone will get it. Good job Muse, good job!

I remember when this song was released as official song of London OG, a lot of people were complaining that it's too "heavy" for the event like OG. I didn't agree. We can hear in it the whole sacrafice, the pain, the sadness, but also a determination of the athletes. It couldn't be more perfect. But this piece of music doesn't concern only sport. It's about the life of all of us. Our victories and fall downs. Our despair and motivation. I'm so grateful to Muse for releasing this song.

This might sound really cliche to some but this song, particularly the lyric ‘I choose to survive’ has helped me get through each day the last two weeks. There was an incident on my way home from work and since then my mind has not been what it was, I feel so low each day and trying to get back to normality is a struggle. But this song once a day has helped me. I’ve still got a long way to go but I’ll get there one day.
