Murray, Anne - You Won't See Me Lyrics

When I call you up, your line's engaged
I have had enough, so act your age
We have lost the time that was so hard to find
And I will lose my mind, if you won't see me
You won't see me.

I don't know why you should want to hide
But I can't get through, my hands are tied
I won't want to stay, I don't have much to say
But I can turn away if you won't see me
You won't see me.

Time after time you refuse to even listen
I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was missin'.

Though the days are few, they're filled with tears
And since I lost you, it feels like years
Yes, it seems so long since you've been gone
And I just can't go on, if you won't see me
You won't see me.

Time after time you refuse to even listen
I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was missin'.

Though the days are few, they're filled with tears
And since I lost you, it feels like years
Yes, it seems so long since you've been gone
And I just can't go on, if you won't see me
You won't see me...

Murray, Anne You Won't See Me Comments
  1. C.... H....

Ultimate compliment coming from John! She had SEVERE reservations about recording this classic!! One of Anne's best!! 👍👍👍

  2. M.... M....

A 'throw-away' song bij McCartney. In a recent interview he said that 'You won't see me' was not very memorable.

  3. V.... P....

    great cover

  4. s.... ....

    Stewie Griffin's favorite singer.

  5. E.... C....

You Won't See Me--The John Cena favorite motto!!!

  6. H.... S....

One of her best. Memories of 1974. Next to that of the boys themselves, this is the best version on the planet.

  7. G.... E....

I'm a life long bass player - enough said.

  8. M.... L....

Such a pretty sound ing instrument. Her voice!

  9. L.... B....

John Lennon once sent Anne a Christmas card with a note that said if he was bad acid tripping, the only thing that helped was listening to Snow Bird over and over.

  10. P.... H....

    Sweet song bird

  11. a.... M....

This is really good. But ill still prefer the original over anything.

  12. C.... ....

    Yay, Anne Murray!

  13. S.... B....

Anne truly does justice to this Beatles classic!

  14. S.... M....

Enh. Maybe John Lennon liked it better but I still like Paul's version better.

  15. N.... A....

    Great song whoever does it.

  16. O.... G....

Happy Birthday today(June 20) to Anne Murray. Decent cover of a Beatles tune. Cheers!

  17. b.... p....

good song....isnt anne a lesbian or something?

  18. b.... m....

Anne Murray is awesome , the Beatles were magical , I wish I'd paid more attention to the times !

  19. f.... ....

It's a shame she didn't do more rock numbers like this.

  20. C.... E....

You were gone all last-night stay gone I’ll be a lot happier having an honest life with out you cause your system hurts how can you live a lie you just need to leave me alone you don’t need to be here anymore

  21. D.... C....

Sounds okay but it has nothing magical in it. The original Beatles version still remains the best so far, in terms of overall sound and originality of the instrumentation.

  22. D.... B....

this song went to #8 on the pop charts in 1974!!!

    D.... B....

    It sounds different here. Draggy.

    D.... B....

I don't remember hearing this song at all in 74, and I am a trivia whiz when it comes to 70's music. Maybe Chicago radio stations never played it.

  23. J.... M....

    Anne nails this one

  24. n.... ....

    Those were the times...

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
    ...
    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    Whith friends surrounded
    The nights of wonder

I love The Beatles, I love her, I love the memories...

  25. G.... G....

hi from 1974 thank you I love it the best

  26. E.... O....

Wow!!! I am totally impressed in 2018!!! This is a great Beatles cover.

  27. R.... R....

Yes. A great Beatles cover...her punched up/rattly session bass mixed with the horns is pure Heaven. Chorus voices are awesome too. Could not be better or more fun. The session must have been amazing to be part of. Thank you

  28. S.... S....

She looked beautiful on this album cover. I'm surprised no one commented on this.

  29. J.... M....

I'm thinking that Anne's version is better than the Fab Four!

  30. J.... T....

La escuchaba en radio AM sentado en la cornisa del techo de mi casa en Bs As mirando los barcos del riachuelo..

  31. R.... K....

John Lennon complimented her on her cover of this Beatle song.

  32. B.... L....

Is missing the descending piano melody at the end of each line and the backing vocals.

  33. K.... A....

I used to listen to this song over and over again on my "Anne Murray" cassette tape as a kid. I DIDN'T KNOW BACK THEN THAT THE BEATLES DID THE ORIGINAL!! Her version is VERY catchy and upbeat. Even the back-up singers add a little style to the song. This version came out in 1974. It brings back SOOOO many GREAT MEMORIES!!

  34. B.... R....

I remember this song from the summer of 1974...9yrs old...great memories..miss my brother and dad R.I.P...

  35. N.... ....

    Anne Murray nailed it !

  36. J.... M....

Anne's version is better, in my opinion. And I'm a huge Beatles fan!

    J.... M....

You say that only because you have romantic thing for Anne

    J.... M....

Elton John also improved "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". John Lennon also preferred Elton's rendition of their song over The Beatles.

    J.... M....

    Cole Parker LOL

    J.... M....

    Beatles version is way better.

  37. B.... ....

John Lennon told Anne that this was his favorite cover of any Beatles song.

  38. S.... ....

A fabulous Beatles song. Deep and meaningful, with some unique musical stylings.
Sadly, not one their best in production terms.
    Sadly, this isn't either.

    S.... ....

...and thank you for judging professional talent, Mr. Amateur Who hasn't done Shit!!

  39. s.... ....

My Mother loved Anne Murray and played this album to death. She abused me terribly as a child and I do associate this song and other songs of Anne's with the abuse. It's taken me 35 years before I could even listen to it again. For some strange reason this song has been going around and around in my head and I thought if I played it, it would go away.

  40. M.... H....

Mrs. Murray , you are a great Lady .Thank you so much for all the good time you give me !
This warm personality and voice will not be forgotten . Blessings.

  41. C.... ....

I remember hearing this song on the radio as a little kid in the summer of 1974. Back then I didn't know who the singer of it was nor did I know much about Anne Murray. When I hit my teens, I became a big fan of hers.

  42. K.... C....

I have a memory of another female making this song a hit but can't find, any one know of another female in the 70s who had this hit??

  43. t.... m....

I can listen to this version several tiimes

  44. t.... m....

hers is better than the beatles

  45. J.... C....

Awesome song! I love Anne Murray.

  46. s.... s....

John Lennon supposedly said Anne Murray's cover of a Beatles song was his favorite.

    s.... s....

I'm surprised Lennon would say that since he hated schmaltzy music and this version certainly falls in that category. Anne's got a nice voice but instrumentally, it's hard to take. It could have been done a lot better with a producer who minimized the excess.

    s.... s....

@Dana James Not so much schmaltzy, as a product of what pop sounded like in 1974 - and it worked well, judging by its top ten chart performance. Not sure if there would a less pop way to do this... it was always a pop song.

  47. C.... C....

The first time I heard of that song was the Anne Murray version. Didn't know she was doing a Beatles song. I think it sounds better than the Beatles. Maybe the Fab Four was in a hurry to finish the song, so they can continue touring. Just a theory. This version seems to take better care on the arrangements. The background vocals, the horns, etc. For some reason they got it right.

    C.... C....

How can you " improve" genius?
    It's merely a version.
And all the songs on Rubber Soul were well written.

    C.... C....

They wrote, recorded and released 15 songs for Rubber Soul sessions (one of the songs came from the Help sessions) and did it with about a month. So yes, I would say this version of "You Won't see Me" probably didn't same kind of attention that it wouldn't gotten in later Beatles sessions.

    C.... C....

Christopher you are right on target. This is the best version

    C.... C....

    Actually you are correct.
The Beatles were not considering this song as strong or their front song for their album "Rubber Soul". As such it didn't have much time to be developed.
Infact, 3 song (including this one), were rushed through an all-nighter during the "marathon" final recording session to complete the Rubber Soul album so it can be released pre-christmast 1965.

They only made 2 takes of this song and then wrapped it.
In a way, it's a testament to The Beatles remarkable quality that even a song they considered a filler or giveaway still had such a good value.

    C.... C....

I'm wondering which songs of Anne's the Beatles covered. Hmmm

  48. H.... L....

I have heard Anne Murray's version of You Won't See Me for over 40 years and to me it's the best cover of any Beatles song.

    H.... L....

John Lennon agreed. He also paid ABBA a compliment on "Dancing Queen" saying it was just a phenomenal arrangement of music. He loved it.

    H.... L....

Interesting as this was actually one of the many songs Paul wrote by himself.

  49. A.... P....

The version of the beatles is infinitely better than this Anne Murray, though without taking credit for his good performance, that of the Fab Four has a sense more folk and playful.

  50. H.... ....

I like this better then Beatles version. I know some will same I'm nuts as that's the original version.

    H.... ....

John absolutely correct Beatles cant hold a candle to this!

    H.... ....

This is the version I heard first. It may be a little blasphemous to say this, but I was rather disappointed when I heard the original.

    H.... ....

    You're right. You're nuts.

    H.... ....

Rubber Soul is a great, great album. But the track You Won't See Me in the album feels "rushed", as the deadline for the album's release was coming, and they just did two takes of the song recording it. Not too much oomph or emotion from Paul while singing. Ringo's drumming was almost just pro-forma.
It was one of the last songs recorded for the album, and it showed. I bet the guys would redo this in a heartbeat if they had the time. Murray definitely sang it way better than Paul did in the Beatle's recording.

    H.... ....

    This is better!

  51. N.... D....

    Great great cover!!! :)

As a seventeen year old in 1973 got a job as a DJ at our local radio station and that is where I fell in love with your music. You Won't See Me is still one of my all-time favorites. Thank you and God bless you.

  57. o.... ....

You can't go wrong covering the Beatles. However, I am missing the ooh lalala's lol

    o.... ....

the la la la las were wonderful

    o.... ....

Anne instead gave us "Doo Doo Doo doot"'s

    o.... ....

I disagree, it's more difficult to cover great singers like The Beatles, so you CAN go wrong, though not in this case.

  58. M.... F....

I love you Anne, you are the greatest! Enjoy your retirement! Big Hug - Ed in Ottawa

  59. j.... q....

  60. c.... ....

WOW! Take me back to 1974! Summer vacations with my family, playing in the sand, building sandcastles at the beaches of New England! Amusement parks, playing outside until the street lights came on, listening to great songs like this on my AM transistor radio :-)

    c.... ....

    Generation X rules! :)

    c.... ....

Yes, yes, yes. Picnics at croton on hudson, trees with beautiful blossoms after a spring rain. Playing outside without a care in the world. Forever etched in my mind.....the 70s were the best. Thanks for that trip down memory lane, I enjoyed it. Peace and love.

    c.... ....

Yep, I remember those dreaded street lights. It just goes to show that people are the same, no matter where you're from. I first heard this song while visiting family in Detroit, on CKLW The Big 8 AM. Great song.

  61. R.... M....

This Song Went To Number 8 On The Billboard Hot 100 Chart In 1974.

    R.... M....

And it went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The B-side, Anne's version of "He Thinks I Still Care" went to #1 on the Country chart. So with all those big numbers, how was this NOT a Gold record?

    R.... M....

    That Is Good Question.

    R.... M....

I never realized that "He (She) Thinks I Still Care"—my all-time favorite Anne Murray song—was the B side. That's incredible!

    R.... M....

"He Thinks I Still Care" is on her album "Danny's Song" while "You Won't See Me" is on "Love Song".

  62. j.... j....

I was maybe in my early teens when I heard this song

  63. D.... W....

John Lennon once told Anne, that hers was his favorite cover version of this song.

    D.... W....

Mackenzie Bowles It’s not better than the Beatles version

    D.... W....

Kvg23 _ Why do people have to spoil things by negatively comparing
    The Beatles?

    D.... W....

    @G&MM
Probably because Mackanzie started the whole crap by comparing it and negatively shitting it first.
the retort was expected after that though, no surprise there.

    D.... W....

@Kvg23 _ This is really really a good song that whoever's version I listen to, i like it. But there's something in Anne's voice that talks to my soul so I'd say i like this version better.

    D.... W....

    ♎ 💜's ♋! What can I say?

  64. L.... C....

The summer of 74 I was looking forward to/dreading high school.  Having good music to listen to helped.  I loved this song.

  67. J.... J....

good song here never or haven't heard of it

    J.... J....

    A cover of  Beatles song!

  68. D.... W....

    Born Morna Anne Murray.

  69. i.... ....

Whoever did the arrangement deserves most of the credit here.

    i.... ....

The backing vocals were devised by Anne's backup singer, Diane Brooks. And the bass line was invented by her bass player, Skip Beckwith, so the two different parts were unique to this arrangement, and changed Anne's mind about covering a Beatles song. She knew that in order to do it, it would have to be different or better than the Fab Four's version. I'd say they succeeded.

    i.... ....

Absolutely, MetFan37. I'm a 78-year-old guy who loves Annie Murray's music. Along with terrifically enjoying myself listening to this version, I couldn't help being struck by the wonderful backup singing and the realization that it was a very complex and beautiful arrangement both to compose and to perform. Those women's voices nearly screaming their passion just blows me away.

  70. c.... ....

Even though I was age 17 when this song was circulating on American radio in 1974 -, I mistakenly thought that it was a Carly Simon song until I saw Anne perform it on a TV show during the late-70s. (In my defense, I probably had mainly heard it being played on inferior-quality AM radios in cars.) It was sometime even later, that I came to realize that it was a Beatles' song (from their "Rubber Soul" album). There again, there are several Beatles' songs (for instance, "The Fool on the Hill") that people frequently only belatedly realized were originally done by that band.

  71. d.... ....

came here for a better version than the Beatles did, and was disapointted. It's just a simplified version of what the Bealtes did

    d.... ....

+Dimitri Bitu this version is fantastic!!

    d.... ....

Definitely better than the Beatles' version. Sexier, too.

    d.... ....

there is no better Version than the original Beatles song..;) listen to that fine bass line in the original..;) love it..

    d.... ....

i think murray does a better job than the fab four

    d.... ....

ah but the bass is so great and growly on this one.I don't really want to debate who's is better. All I know this version is fucking boss.

  72. K.... ....

Can you upload this entire album? GOOD album!!

  73. G.... F....

These are the days when a group or recording artist went into a studio they actually talent. They could read music, actually play an instrument, possess a genuine gift from the Spirit of God, intended to be shared with others for a positive purpose, (Like Ann) The Songwriter/Singer Actually thought of the possible aftereffects their song lyrics might have on others.like children for example. Few people give a crap anymore, They all want the harvest but few want to spend any time in the field

    G.... F....

    So very true.

    G.... F....

Except ... the writer of this song (Sir Paul) couldn't read music. Probably still can't. But he sure could play an instrument!

    G.... F....

...None of the Beatles could read music !

  74. D.... ....

1980? No sir, this was in 1974. I remember it well that summer.

  75. T.... ....

So do I. A well-written song will always be covered and remade til the end of time but some artists do superior versions. This is a case. Also for great remakes see: Aretha Franklin, Patti Austin, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, just to name a few. :)

  76. S.... N....

John Lennon sent Anne a message saying that this version was the best cover he's ever heard of a Beatles song..and I totally agree...she totally owns this song..

    S.... N....

Actually what Lennon said it was one of his favourite of Beatles covers, not necessarily the best ever.

Anyway, Anne version is great and certainly better produced than the original of The Beatles version which they rushed through an all-nighter and just made 2 takes of the song in order to complete the track listing of Rubber Soul album so they can released it before christmast 1965.

  77. l.... ....

There are some songs that are just so great that more than one artist/group can do it and make it work. This is such a song.Anne Murray does a great job with it.

  78. D.... A....

I also prefer Anne's version to the Beatles version!

  79. U.... ....

Same here, but I've always liked Anne Murray's version better.

  80. S.... S....

I've ALWAYS loved her version! ACTUALLY...back in 1974 I had NO CLUE that this was a Beatles song.

    S.... S....

Que buen tema, que recuerdo melosos me traen y me transportan a mi juventud allá por el año 1980 bailando en la disco barba azul.
