Mullins, Rich - Elijah Lyrics

The Jordan is waiting for me to cross through
My heart is aging I can tell
So Lord, I'm begging for one last favor from You
Here's my heart take it where You will

This life has shown me how we're mended and how we're torn
How it's okay to be lonely as long as you're free
Sometimes my ground was stoney
And sometimes covered up with thorns
And only You could make it what it had to be
And now that it's done
Well if they dressed me like a pauper
Or if they dined me like a prince
If they lay me with my fathers
Or if my ashes scatter on the wind
I don't care

But when I leave I want to go out like Elijah
With a whirlwind to fuel my chariot of fire
And when I look back on the stars
It'll be like a candlelight in Central Park
And it won't break my heart to say goodbye

There's people been friendly, but they'd never be your friends
Sometimes this has bent me to the ground
Now that this is all ending
I want to hear some music once again
'Cause it's the finest thing that I have ever found

But the Jordan is waiting
Though I ain't never seen the other side
Still they say you can't take in the things you have here
So on the road to salvation
I stick out my thumb and He gives me a ride
And His music is already falling on my ears

There's people been talking
They say they're worried about my soul
Well, I'm here to tell you I'll keep rocking
'Til I'm sure it's my time to roll
And when I do

When I leave I want to go out like Elijah
With a whirlwind to fuel my chariot of fire
And when I look back on the stars
It'll be like a candlelight in Central Park
And it won't break my heart to say goodbye

'Cause when I leave I want to go out like Elijah
With a whirlwind to fuel my chariot of fire
And when I look back on the stars
It'll be like a candlelight in Central Park
And it won't break my heart to say goodbye

Mullins, Rich Elijah Comments
  1. T.... H....

Cannot wait to meet Rich Mullins in the glory of Heaven!

  2. D.... 2....

It seems like he knew he was going to die...very soon

  3. A.... L....

I was very fortunate to see Rich Mullins at Southside Assembly of God in Jackson, Mississippi. It seemed to me that he really enjoyed observing people. He sat on the edge of the stage and swung/kicked his legs while the crew was making preparations before the concert; just kinda hanging around and watching people.

  4. N.... H....

few people knows all this on real

  5. K.... G....

    tears, thank you

  6. m.... ....

I cry every time. Just once, ONCE I'd wanna see what he would have created beyond 1997 to this day. Just once...

    m.... ....

I think he's still singing and we can one day join him in praising God together, when we are Home too.

  7. J.... A....

Those eyes of a worn man of God.

Hi all of you you shall listen to William Braham sermons they are helpful for us to be close to God and strengthen our faith and life don't miss it u will find it in every languages check

    S.... L....

Reading the Bible and understanding the hermeneutics is more important than someone’s sermons

    S.... L....

@oce of course it the base but sermons also helps I hope u will check it

  14. K.... B....

Rich was the 3rd person I love that was killed in a Jeep crash .

The first 2 really bug me - because I was personally close to them!. & might have been preventable with
    More love from me.

“Brothers keepers !” Need to be vigilant !

    K.... B....

If you would spend some time studying Near Death Experiences (NDEs) you could get past that personal responsibility that you have no need to feel. It does not serve you well, and you could stand to break that spell. Only God is in control of a person's "time to go".
And besides that, the "victim" never feels the impact of the crash. They (as soul self) are always jerked out before the impact happens. Great stories. You might enjoy them. They just might heal you, too.

  15. K.... L....

    I love this guy.

  16. D.... M....

    This slays me every time.

  17. L.... ....

I can't believe he never married.. He looks like a deep and wonderful soul to have great conversations with..

  18. R.... S....

Aww I guess god love rich so much that’s way he took him
But I don’t care how long is since he’s gone but I which he will still around with he’s sense of humor he’s music
I know we all see him again in a consent in heaven

  19. B.... M....

    RIP RICH

  20. S.... R....

My son's name is Elijah. I named him that in honor of my love for God. Elijah...my God is God. ☝🙏💖 I played this for my son while he was still in my womb as the sun was going down and I was driving down the road. He's 17 now and I still think of that moment every time I listen to this song. RIP Wayne (Rich).

  21. C.... R....

I still remember this very day I came home from high school and found out Ruch had been killed just the night before. I could not stop crying. As a teen, I was so hurt, sad and didn't understand. Rich was my mentor. I still cry from the separation of his death here on earth. I remember hugging my pillow and sobbing and playing this song. You made it home Rich. Welcome home.

  22. M.... ....

The Elijah song by Rich Mullins & Child of The Father by Mylon Lafever were my very first exposure to God.

  23. B.... N....

    He served
    ..barefoot and proud

  24. D.... W....

Rich Mullins left us way to soon. It's kinda weird but in this video Rich looks just like me when I was way younger.and I had hair.

  25. M.... ....

Rich Mullins and Mylon Lafever were the first Christian music I heard as a new believer. As a heathen, music had been the center of my life because it expressed feelings I couldn't reach. I really like this song. Rich did go up like Elijah.

  26. N.... B....

Brother Rich Mullins Gentle, kind, meek, loving personality digs deep into my heart and comforts my hurting soul, Thank you Jesus! 💗

  27. F.... i....

He joined the Hugenouts before him believing the Good News and spreading the Gospel.

  28. N.... B....

We love you Richard! I miss You! You will always have a special place in my heart! I wish I could have met You! See You in Heaven! 💗

  29. K.... Y....

thank you for this clip. This man was so packed with powerful emotion, passion, pain and the love of God! It makes watching him and singing with him very satisfying. Thank you God for good and perfect gifts everywhete you have placed them. Rock on Rich

  30. D.... C....

Wonderful. Thankyou for sharing. God bless you.

  31. a.... ....

Rich and Adam: Be it done to you both as you love and believe the LORD, the God of Elijah. Amen. <3

  32. t.... ....

It’s okay to be lonely as long as you’re free.

    t.... ....

    tori2dles indeed

  33. G.... B....

I am so greatful as after watching the movie ragamuffin i know that I am loved and can love warts and all i am me and God still loves me

  34. H.... M....

Rich’s 62 Birthday would have been 10-22-2017. Rich once said the lyric “when I look back on the stars, it’ll be like a Candlelight in Central Park” was a reference to the vigil after John Lennon was murdered.

    H.... M....

Do not agree with that assessment (reference to J.L. vigil).  I believe it is a statement of how insignificant this world is.  Looking back at all of the universe is as insignificant as a candle in Central Park compared to eternity in the majestic glorious presence of God.

    H.... M....

RazorStrap couldn’t it be both? No? Poetry isn’t one dimensional / binary, especially quality poetry like Rich’s.

The Scriptures are teeming with life. His Word is fractal; or, “wheels within wheels.”

Consider how the song could be inspired from a real physical, historical event which event, in turn, could be a type and shadow of heavenly things for the poetic soul. Blessings.

  35. G.... ....

I miss you Rich. Great musician.

  36. J.... K....

It always seemed to me, based on this song, that, by revelation, Rich anticipated his death. I deeply miss him.

    J.... K....

John Kelly I had the same thought.

    J.... K....

I have read speculation that the song Elijah may have been a tribute to Keith Green.  About that time Rich Mullins grew a full beard and very much resembled Keith Green.

    J.... K....

We should all anticipate our deaths. It's better to be in the house of morning than the house if mirth.

  37. W.... S....

the crazy thing is that he always sang this saying "When i leave im gonna go out like Elijah" And he did. The jeep crash really was a chariot of fire. Although Elijah never died its still crazy the he got what he wanted. So we can take comfort that it never broke his heart to say goodbye.

    W.... S....

It should not ever break any Christians heart to "say good-bye".  Death where is your sting?  To be absent the body is to be present with Christ.  We are victors.

    W.... S....

One person said..he died by truck...i still have him going out like Elijah
    ..sry

    W.... S....

Wade Simpson it’s nothing crazy about going to heaven
The guy has talent and and he’s message it was all about to be who you are stopping to be any other person inside
He loved the lord .the lord love him he took him so death is not your final destination it’s the begging of your journey

    W.... S....

@Bev Nair He was ejected from the Jeep and a truck swerved to miss the overturned Jeep in the road, not knowing Mullins was on the road directly in his path.

I can hardly wait until I can sing and praise in Heaven with Rich...and hear all the songs he has sung up there all these years.

  38. W.... R....

The kid at 4:33 was feeling it. It makes you wonder how many people Rich inspired at the time. I never heard of him until long after he passed, and he's meant so much to me. This song breaks me every time I hear it.

  39. n.... ....

Rich Mullins live. so good. He was such a good musician. I wish more Christian musicians would follow his lead on music making. so sincere, so personal, so irreverent, so innovative. Not merely going through the motions by singing time warn songs about going through the motions. Who sings about Elijah?????

  40. P.... R....

Even after many years since his death, Rich's music still speaks.

    P.... R....

I sing his praises all day long

    P.... R....

Hi all of you you shall listen to William Braham sermons they are helpful for us to be close to God and strengthen our faith and life don't miss it u will find it in every languages check and

    P.... R....

Pam Roberts of course, because it will forever

  41. J.... L....

Certainly one of the over looked great in the world of Christian music. This guy was a serious musician and a serious songwriter. And his mastery of the hammer dulcimer is also quite fascinating. The crazy thing about this song is that it was prophetic. He went out exactly the way he describes. I met Rich once. He was exactly what you'd expect. Eccentric, odd, talented, and genuine.

  42. S.... S....

look how the Ragamuffin's loved the song

    S.... S....

    Simon Smith :)

  43. S.... S....

he left his mark. or rather he left the mark Abba Father knew he would and needed him to.

  44. L.... W....

This one of my favorites I want to go out like this

  45. M.... N....

As I watch more & more of his live concerts & the way he spoke & was so sincere yet had a wonderful sense of humor I feel like the movie didn't really do him justice. I think it focused more on his struggles than all the good he did. Does anyone else feel that way or is it just me?

    M.... N....

I refuse to see the movie, based on reviews/comments, for whatever their reasons it failed to show the real, basic + simple (HONEST) Rich, I believe him to be= With all his imperfections, just like all the rest of us, HE loved + respected God so much and shared his unique insights with us by the way he lived his life: Loving God + Loving His Neighbors...
Sadly to me, focus on his imperfections by the authors (drinking, depression or whatever - I'm not sure since I didn't see it) only mislead the public on who Rich truly was/is :( Rich is my hero Angel, and was a messenger to God and Gods love, for me -And no mattewr what imperfections or bad habits he may have had, it is Rich's spirit for Loving, and guiding us to Gods ove, that should have been the primary thoughts people left the theater with. Just more proof, not to trust the ideas and actions of humans, who I expect meant well, but got caught up in promotion and profits in this mistaken endeavor. Listen to Rich, his music, lyrics and thoughts on God + life and you will get to know the REAL RICH - The guy portrayed in the movie, sounds nothing like him, to me!

    M.... N....

Hi all of you you shall listen to William Braham sermons they are helpful for us to be close to God and strengthen our faith and life don't miss it u will find it in every languages check

    M.... N....

YES, agreed, only his dark and bad side was portrayed but ypu just have to love thuis guy's sense of humor and God given grace to prophecy.

  46. J.... L....

    We miss ya, Rich...

One of the people on this earth that I wish I had met before he left...but that I'll see in Glory.

    J.... L....

    Jason Lee amen

  47. P.... R....

Rich had a way of making you think outside of the box. We need more of this in the world. Less "religion" and posturing, and more straight from the heart. While his music was great, it was his spoken word and honesty that helped to change many as well. He was shunned by most other artists until he died. He had a way of making people uncomfortable and forcing you to look at your heart with honesty.

    P.... R....

+Phil Reese So true. Need more "real" and less "poseurs"...CCM is finally understanding that, and Rich definitely was one of the first to show the industry that.

  48. L.... P....

Thanks so very much, One of my Favorite songs of Rich Mullins.  I Miss him.  I Truly Wish there were more "Servants" like him in this world.
