Moyet, Alison - God Give Me Strength Lyrics

Now I have nothing, so God give me strength
'Cause I'm weak in his way
And if I'm strong, I might still break

And I don't have anything to share
That I won't throw away into the air
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out

He was the light that I'd bless
He took my last chance at happiness
So God give me strength
God give me strength

I can't hold on to him
God give me strength
When the phone doesn't ring
And I'm lost in imagining
Everything that kind of love is worth
As I tumble back down to the earth

That song is sung out
This bell is rung out
He was the light that I'd bless
He took my last chance at happiness
So God give me strength

God, if he'd grant me his indulgence and decline
I might as well wipe him from my memory
Fracture the spell as he becomes my enemy
Maybe I was washed out
Like a lip print on a shirt
See, I'm only human, I want him to hurt
I want him to hurt

Since I lost the power to pretend
That there could ever be a happy ending
That song is sung out
This bell is rung out

He was the light that I'd bless
He took my last chance at happiness
So God give me strength
God give me strength

I like Elvis' version. Straight from the source. But wow this is so powerful. So honest, raw, and real. Well done!

  2. J.... S....

Elvis wrote a Burk Bacharach influence song I think....

    J.... S....

Joseph Sullivan It's a song that was written and performed collaboratively by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach.

So undecided on best version...... but this is FUCKING awesome ❤️

  4. p.... ....

Free pass for Alison Moyet, a long time fan of Elvis Costello. '...emotion of Vigards version'...no, God give ME strength

  6. U.... U....

    she gives me godlike strength.

  7. U.... U....

...I cant live without Lady Alison...

  8. S.... C....

She has a great voice however this song has been sung far better by Trinjnte Oosterhuis who has the high level with long winded versions.......

  9. e.... t....

Elvis (and Burt) is King! ~ Check out Gag-bit Vinyl in Bushwick NYC for late 70/80’s post punk/new wave. ~ :-D

  10. J.... S....

i love alison.great voice beautiful person ,but it doesnt have the emotion of vigards version

    J.... S....

    @Jason Sparks I agree

    J.... S....

+Jason Sparks The original from Costello is better than both, has more power

    J.... S....

+Jason Sparks She is European/British, - - - English may not be easy for her to sing with our dialect, so that would affect her "emotion" as you put it. She sings in other languages, too. I like her vibrato.

  11. M.... H....

    Amaizing!

  12. J.... G....

Who does a better version, Alison Moyet or Trijntje Oosterhuis?

    J.... G....

@Dac Tucker I agree there.  The song is obviously meant for a woman... but Costello performance, on 'a memorable night' (or whatever, precisely) with Burt Bacharach was a benchmark of sorts.

    J.... G....

Traincha’s is by far the best

    J.... G....

The video of the Trijntje live concert gives me chills

    J.... G....

None of them can touch the original by Elvis

    J.... G....

Elvis Costello by a billion light years. It's Elvis' song you numbskulls. He wrote it with Bacharach. And it first appeared on Painted From Memory - songs he wrote with Bacharach

  13. N.... D....

This is my favourite version of the song. It gets more and more powerful as it goes on.

  14. m.... ....

A contralto can handle these notes just fine.

  15. E.... L....

    :'';;:"";;'

  16. E.... L....

    Thank you!

  17. J.... G....

There are frankly so many fine versions of this song; it's odd. Check out Elvis Costello's version with BB... *but there were more than one the two did togther*. "A Perfect Night" or some such...(!) available for viewing on Y.T.

    J.... G....

John G. Lewis Well, it IS their song that they wrote.

  18. d.... ....

    To be adored.......

  19. A.... ....

Although I really Moyet on other songs ... I believe this song was much better served by Vigard. This song is full of angst and the heavy vibrato Moyet is putting on this takes away from the power of the lyrics and makes it sound like she's simply singing a song without feeling any of the emotion.. Both Costello and Vigard understand what the song is about and captured the emotion of the song perfectly.

    A.... ....

I'd have to agree. This arrangement is great, but the emotion isn't deep like Vigard, Elvis, or Oosterhuis.

  20. C.... H....

    ...she has a sultry voice...nice!

  21. m.... ....

very nice Alison.... but come on people? Elvis kills this tune like no other performer.

  22. J.... G....

I believe, if I were to choose a favorite version, I would go with this wonderful, passionate version by Alison Moyet. My favorite of the 'female versions', iyw. ("God Give Me Strength" is best sung, imo, by a female voice). Yet, it is undeniably true that Elvis Costello gave a remarkably powerful rendition of this song with B. B. Even haunting I might add, and a version in its strength that will match Alison's beauty.

  23. r.... b....

    wonderfull

  24. T.... ....

    Great....God given talent...awesome

  25. g.... ....

Pure soul: Moyet makes this song hers.

  26. 2.... ....

    Fantastic...

  27. F.... J....

would love to hear her do Bless the Beasts and the Children. Or more karen

  28. F.... J....

    perfect song for her!

  29. R.... H....
