Mountain - Theme For An Imaginary Western Lyrics

When the wagons leave the city
For the forest and further on
Painted wagon of the morning
Dusty roads where they have gone
Sometimes travelin' through the darkness
At the summer comin' home
Foreign faces by the wayside
Look as if they hadn't known

Oh the sad was in their eyes
And the desert that's dry
In a country town
Where the map was found

Oh the dancing and the singing
Oh the music when they play
Oh the fire that they saw there
On the grave of no return

Sometimes they found it
Sometimes they kept it
Often lost it on the way
Pawnee shadow to possess him
Sometimes ride inside of day

Oh the sad was in their eyes
And the desert that's dry
In a country town
Where the map was found

Mountain Theme For An Imaginary Western Comments
  1. L.... P....

I know there are a lot of people that hate Sirus XM radio but I thank God for it and Earl Bailey for turning me on to this super fantastic song! It is a first for me and I can't tell you how much I love it! Thanks a million Earl!

  2. w.... m....

Im 15 years old and i like this kind of music.

  3. H.... K....

    Whate a great track!!

  4. S.... M....

    A very underated band.

  5. C.... L....

One of my favorite Leslie West tunes!

  6. E.... Z....

I seen them at Randells Island NY man they were electric

  7. m.... t....

they also used to play nantucket sleigh ride on the radio in denver

  8. C.... C....

    Theme for Oregon Trail :)

  9. B.... K....

Please stop referring to Leslie as "the fat man".

  10. J.... ....

    Goddamn but West was good.

Felix' voice from the very angels above - masculine angels.
And Corky Laing was perfect just perfect fit for this band too.
Cream, ZZ Top, Grand Funk were great power trios but Mountain was even better.

  11. .... P....

This song makes me feel committed to keep climbing the mountain in life and never stop climbing to victory. Thank you Mountain. Rest easy Felix and Jack.

  12. W.... ....

Amazing 60s timeless ballad. like Hendrix's little wing.

  13. R.... O....

Can anybody explain this song to me? I love it. But what the fuck......

  14. R.... P....

Leslie West used a Les Paul Junior guitar on this song, which was a low cost Gibson guitar. This shows that a great player can create a great sound out of inexpensive equipment and make it memorable.

  15. K.... M....

Brilliant band, West a brilliant guitarist.XXXXXXX

  16. R.... S....

Felix Parpalardi had one hell of a voice! Leslie West played very loud. Felix actually lost some of his hearing, due to very high decibils. Nobody ever put Leslie down for it. He played such a sweet Les Paul. You just had to listen!

  17. R.... S....

Jack Bruce wrote one hell of a good song, but Mountain brought it home?

  18. M.... M....

I saw West , Bruce and Corky Lang at the Philadelphia Spectrum in the early 1970s what an experience!

  19. J.... A....

This is a masterpiece, this is GREAT!

  20. R.... S....

    Hi,the,more,I listen,to,Lesley's,solo,I think,it,might,be,the,best,solo,I have,ever,heard,,and,I,have,,been,listing, to,mountain,climbing,since, junior high,school, I, am,60now,its,so,good

  21. D.... B....

I saw them live at my college back in the 70s. An amazing band.

  22. J.... L....

This is a great album. But Jack Bruce sings this much better on his Songs for a Taylor album. However, Leslie’s solo here is great.

    J.... L....

It must be nice to have an airport named after you.

  23. P.... P....

One of Mountains greatest songs, imo

  24. C.... T....

Best rock song ever no doubt. Sorry, Latimer :(

  25. W.... R....

Heard Back and Leslie do this live on Howard Stern from both sides of the Atlantic... Jack was truly a legend...so is Leslie a Long Island boy...

  26. P.... M....

At that time no one else on the planet played with such melodic perfection. The use of his pick was unique ,his leads were so melodic and no one had such graceful stretches. The best there was.I only wish he hadn’t changed his style and playing so much.He spoiled what he had.

  27. M.... T....

I want this played at my funeral.
Ginger Baker will probably still be alive.
Ginger is impervious to all diseases and cannot be killed by conventional weaponry.

  28. M.... T....

I can't tell which version of this incredible song I like better.
    Jack Bruce's original.
    Or Mountain....
    Why not both????
    Best song Cream never recorded.

  29. T.... S....

    Beutiful song but mixed poorly

  30. M.... S....

Much prefer the Colosseum version...much better vocals too.

  31. P.... M....

Geez,I wish he still played like this! I miss his beautiful ,singing leads. So musical. What happened Leslie? What made you stop playing so beautifully? At one time no one could touch this guy for creative soaring leads that touched your soul.

  32. M.... B....

    Great bass

  33. j.... b....

Everyone should take note that possibly in a couple years time a bunch of people will show up here talking about a crippled cowboy and his italian friend trying to kill the president whilst on a horse race. It's just JoJo fans, do not be alarmed.

  34. D.... C....

My high school buddies and I listened to this album (along with Nantucket Sleighride) a LOT. Vinyl at home; 8-track in the car. We also loved Grand Funk, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin... but we always knew Mountain was a cut above the rest.

  35. P.... C....

Great, but listen to that,Jack Bruce private on Piano

  36. j.... r....

    mountain at their peak.
    were you a mountaineer?

  37. T.... F....

I haven't this in years and now it's really Felix's voice for me that stands out, just wonderful, as is this beautiful song by the incredible Jack Bruce. They both became life long friends during the making of Cream's Disraeli Gears album recorded here in NYC. That album to me is Cream's greatest achievement by far. RIP Jack and Felix.

  38. J.... W....

    Nantucket sleighride.

  39. F.... Z....

More than 50 years with and on the Mountain. Sun in our life's, this music always vibrations... and as a travel for understood... even leads in our hearts! ❤️

  40. r.... d....

If you like this version..... you will love the LIVE tribute to Felix by Leslie, on "Night of the Guitars" 1989

  41. P.... E....

    Omg...such memories....so fkn GREAT!!!!

  42. j.... r....

mountain at their peak as they climbed the slippery slopes of rock & roll; they could have taken a nantucket sleigh ride down, but when could they everest?
time to go west to the village people & find les & pappalardi in the paparazzi.

  43. S.... B....

Steve Knight's organ is the unsung hero of this song, perfectly establishing the foundation for the others, and Leslie's 2 solos are iconic, and that's not hyperbole, that's a fact.

  44. N.... P....

This was the greatest song for me . A Jack Bruce song which Feilx and Mountain owned.

  45. M.... R....

This is the best rocksong ever made, nobody can't make better, this the one and only

  46. K.... K....

I saw Mountain many times in the 1969-1972 era. This song would always make me cry. It reminds me of the music of Scotland That I grew up with. Really.

  47. R.... E....

So great and unique for its time. Great memories on this one. Stunning lead work as well.

  48. J.... D....

It's my ALL TIME FAVORITE song by Mountain. The lyrics to that song are... NOT to mention Leslie West's guitar. Why isn't it played on "classic rock" stations?

  49. H.... D....

  52. j.... ....

haven't heard this in year's Good Song!!!!

  53. d.... ....

Holy bleep, I remember this song. This is Cream's cousin. I think they nailed this, especially Leslie! Felix sang it perfect too!

  54. D.... W....

    4 EVER Music.

  55. D.... W....

Capital in Portchester, and Ted Rail Rock bar in Nanuet. great shows,

  56. B.... B....

Funny my record, same Mountain LP, has a lot of fuzz box in it and it's a lot better.

  57. B.... B....

The greatest guitar solo of all time. He made the guitar speak, moan, cry, and wail; each note a masterpiece. Highest regard for Leslie Weinstein and Jack Bruce.

  58. R.... S....

Felix totally killed it. Leslie West brought it home. Thank you Jack Bruce, for writing it!

  59. J.... C....

A masterpiece!! Saw Mountain many times at Fillmore East. Brings back the best of times $3.50 for tix Crazy!!!

  60. P.... O....

    I love Claudina

  61. G.... C....

Felix had a great voice didn't he?

  62. E.... P....

  65. T.... ....

Always let this play after "Mississippi Queen".

  66. S.... F....

Just heard this song on DEEPTRACKS Sirius in my jeep while coming back from the Gym. Of course my stereo was set at 11 vibrating the mirror as I sang along.

  67. J.... M....

Mississippi Queens is Mountain's claim to fame, but "Theme from an Imaginary Western" is an excellent tune, perhaps their best, and "Nantucket Sleigh Ride" is also excellent

  68. G.... O....

Saw him 11 years ago in a small venue in Ridgefield CT for my son's 16th birthday. To this day he says it was his BEST birthday..

  69. c.... y....

    thanks.Jack....felix...and.of.course...LESLIE

  70. D.... M....

Was just reading that Michael Schenker loves this song.
Not really the kind of thing I am into but Leslie West does
have a good feel for the right notes and vibrato.

    D.... M....

UFO's "Time on My Hands" seems to have borrowed from this.

  71. M.... ....

WHATS WRONG WITCH YOU ? YOU DON'T USE GROUPON ?  NOW WE GET 2 COMMERCIALS INSTEAD OF ONE, WHAT IS NEXT 3 COMMERCIALS , THEN 4 ????

  72. 3.... ....

    Leslie West!

  73. C.... E....

Husband account...I was shocked he'd never heard this until last week when I had him listen

  74. K.... R....

I know it's a little nostalgic to say this was the best era for music, but its absolutely true. The artists had more freedom to create and express, and fit 7 different concepts on one album, or tell a whole story. So glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s!

  75. j.... r....

i was playing this over 40 years ago.

    j.... r....

Closer to 49 years for me.

  76. T.... J....

Great song by a very underrated band, I only found out about MOUNTAIN when D.C.3 covered this song on "The Blasting Concept Vol.2" compilation on SST Records back in 1986.

  77. S.... C....

Jesus H. Christ. Every *&^% note on that solo is etched in heaven. PERFECT.

  78. R.... S....

Jack Bruce wrote this song. Mountain took it home. Great vocals, guitar, and drums. Still Jack Bruce was the angel that created something from nothing! Both versions give me a Woody towards life!

  79. E.... L....

As a lifetime musician and music fan, this song was a transformative moment in time. What a band.

  80. N.... A....

Leslie West...funny down to earth guy. Stay in Good health sir. Met you at Guitar Center in N.Y.C.

  81. S.... T....

KISS' "Goin' Blind" was inspired by this song.

  82. t.... ....

Bruce and Pappalardi. Both giants in my musical world. Add Chris Squire. RIP

  83. t.... ....

Words can not describe just how gut wrenchingly great the leslie cab and keyboard (probably a B3 Hammond) sound along with Mr. Leslie West's guitar solos. A very underrated group of musicians with such an awesome sound. When it comes to guitar work less is definitely better. Thank you Felix and Leslie.

  84. W.... j....

That B-3 throughout makes this tune. Saw them in 1968.....still love Mountain~Guitar solo should be in the top 10 //

  85. J.... M....

I think of my dad when I hear this song. He was the son of Pioneer parents.

  86. s.... ....

  88. Y.... S....

    THAT SOLO!!!!!

  89. I.... W....

Angels, tired angels, Don't turn around,Nantucket Sleighride and this song mean so much to me,together with One last cold kiss.

  90. A.... r....

Theres a version with Jack Bruce too

  91. S.... K....

That guitar tone is just beautiful.

  92. s.... s....

Almost 50 yrs ago and it's still better than most of the crap from the last 10--20 years

  93. J.... A....

Leslie west some of the best licks

  94. m.... M....

Air guitar air sing air drum.

  95. J.... ....

    Leslie West take a bow

  96. g.... p....

i heard them play this song as i was leaving the concert at Randalls Island in NY.The echo in the stadium made this song so haunting and so fucking good.RIP Felix......

  97. G.... ....

I have always loved this great tune by Mountain since I was very young, and the hippies were older than me...I have no idea what it's about, but I always think of Owsley and the Hipster bus, and the greatness of what could have been, that incredible spirit that the had and lost somewhere along the way...I don't think anyone can match Leslie's evocative playing here, really beautiful

  98. P.... K....

    153 fish

  99. L.... P....

Felix's voice almost operatic IMO better than opera
