Mountain Goats, The - No, I Can't Lyrics

You bought me some candy.
And you bought me some flowers.
And you bought me a sofa.
And you bought me a radio.

Thank you for the candy.
Thank you for the flowers.
Thank you for the sofa.
Thank you for the radio.

(now I have everything I need.) [x4]

You brought me a puppy.
And you brought me a lamp.
And you brought me some books.
And you brought me a filing cabinet.

Thanks you for the puppy.
Thank you for the lamp.
Thanks for the books.
Thanks for the filing cabinet
I don't know what I did without it.

(now I have everything I need.) [x4]

You came by. and you came in.
And you let the wind in.
It must be cold outside.
We looked out, through the sliding glass door.
But I'd forgotten what we were looking for.

Thank you for coming by.
It's nice to see you once in a while.
Thank you for the coat I forgot to mention.
I've been freezing in here.
I've been freezing in here.

(now I have everything I need.) [x4]
Yeah!

Mountain Goats, The No, I Can't Comments

my best friend died last september, he was supposed to get married but he died at his bachelor party. this was the first mountain goats song he ever showed me, it was funny because i asked him a question and he said "No, I Can't" and then turned up the stereo and played this song. he was so funny and cool and sweet, and this song was so us, always roaming around in his ancient jeep collecting junk that my parents would yell at me for hauling into the house-- i miss him a lot. i'm glad this song is still here, though, it's nice to remember. thanks JD, you set the soundtrack to some amazing memories <3

the low fi version is better

  5. W.... S....

This has the most powerful chorus with the weakest verses. Great pre-chorus too, still love you John.

Now I have everything I need.

    W.... S....

    I like the verses.

the tune is great, chorus is great. but wtf is wrong the verses.🤔🤔

    .... ....

Absolutely nothing is wrong with the verses

    .... ....

Supposed to evoke an emotion, supporting the lyrics, I thought. Bland resentment builds in to rage. Nothing changes, you're just waiting for them to show up for you, and they never really will give you what you need from them.

The version with Rachael was recorded for "songs for Peter Hughes" the one without Rachael was on transmissions for Horace. I think...
