Mountain Goats, The - Design Your Own Container Garden Lyrics

I took to the highway
Went out to pico-crenshaw
Old friends, old friends

I took to the highway
The highway took to me like a second
Skin

Rolled around in the evening
Circling like a buzzard
Trouble in mind
Excavating the space we left behind

Yes I took trinkets with me
Left them by the crater
Here ghosts, old ghosts

Smelled all the chlorine
I took the low road
Where the light was just right

Crawled around in the glowing
All embracing wreckage
Sunburned and snow-blind
Excavating the space we left behind

Citylegs, do you have a large copy of the cover image? Beautiful!

The Mountain Goats has had a staying power that no other band has ever had on me. I found them around 2011 and I still circle back to the same stuff. Not as much of the furious stuff anymore (Home Again Garden Grove, Autoclave, Magpie).
Someone pointed out that the line "feel shame, real shame" in Goths could have appeared elsewhere and I thought it might have been here- same rhythm as "hear ghosts, old ghosts". It doesn't matter. This song is utterly tranquil with a note of melancholy. It's another In Corolla, none of the terminal bleakness of In Nova Scotia, and it's nice.

I'm not finding "feel shame real shame" in an older song.

Essentially an improved version of Ending the Alphabet.
