Mountain Goats, The - Autoclave Lyrics

Hand me your hand, let me look in your eyes
As my last chance to feel human begins to vaporize
Maybe it's the heat in here, maybe it's the pressure
You ought to head for the exits, the sooner the better

I am this great, unstable mass of blood and foam
And no one in her right mind would make my home her home
My heart's an autoclave
My heart's an autoclave

When I try to open up to you, I get completely lost
Houses swallowed by the earth, windows thick with frost
And I reach deep down within but the pathways twist and turn
And there's no light anywhere and nothing left to burn

I am this great, unstable mass of blood and foam
And no emotion that's worth having could call my heart its home
My heart's an autoclave
My heart's an autoclave

I dreamt that I was perched atop a throne of human skulls
On a cliff above the ocean, howling wind and shrieking seagulls
And the dream went on forever, one single static frame
Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name

And I am this great, unstable mass of blood and foam
And no one in her right mind would make her home my home
My heart's an autoclave
My heart's an autoclave

  1. P.... Y....

If I turned around and saw John singing live in public bitch I'd flip my shit, these people don't understand how lucky they are lmao

  2. S.... L....

    Most beautiful human alive

  3. O.... B....

Where is that statue? It is a cool statue.

  4. Q.... P....

It's like he was looking into my mind in junior high school it's like I wrote this song 30 years before he was born but never actually wrote it God bless you for writing this song

  5. P.... D....

Oh hey I've been to that sculpture!

  6. j.... [....

so the award for worlds cutest laugh goes to

  7. c.... ....

im listening to this for 6 years now. it still makes me sad and brings back the same pictures to me as it did back then. truly a deeply touching song.

  8. O.... J....

3:08 - Holy shit! A new Darnielle noise. I can't even describe that shit. It's right up there with the manic "LA-LA-la-la-laaaaaaa!" from Southwood Plantation Road.

  9. S.... J....

So glad to have listened to this enough for it to be completely familiar to me in a time of need.

  10. B.... D....

    Cerebus and Jaka.

  11. T.... E....

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.

    T.... E....

    Such a beautifully inserted quote

  12. I.... S....

I walk past this sculpture every day on my way to work, it has a lot more meaning now.

    I.... S....

Where is it I need to pay Homage

  13. A.... ....

"I dreamt that I was perched atop a throne of human skulls
On a cliff above the ocean, howling wind and shrieking seagulls
And the dream went on forever, one single static frame
Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name"

This verse is the reason that I listen to this band religiously, it's one of the best I've ever heard. I love this performance of it, I've never seen it before now!

  14. g.... p....

    This is the right thing

  15. g.... p....

    I love u John

  16. T.... G....

JD is love. JD is life.

    T.... G....

    The Goatiest of Goats literally!

  17. R.... T....

Aside from the terrible camera work, I absolutely adore this video. This song, the place, the emotion in his voice and his body. I cant get enough of the The Mountain Goats I really can't.

  18. S.... ....

Aside from the meaning of the song, the way and place he performs it shows why he and his friends have done something so meaningful to all of us ... he wants the people around him to be part of what he's doing, be part of his music. He's not an artist with an untouchable talent on a stage, he's an artist with an untouchable talent in our lives. He and his friends seem to want our lives and their art to feed off of each other. He has more in common with visual artists like Mark Rothko and Jean-Michel Basquiat than he has in common with any pop musician. Performing on the street, for a few skateboarders he drives with even more intensity and mania than on stage, maybe because he's closer to them.

  19. F.... ....

his emotion that he puts into his songs is exactly why I love his work.

  20. D.... ....

    oh my god help him

  21. K.... D....

When he turns to face the camera I love him that much more.

  22. B.... R....

you know that you have a great piece of work when its meaning is being debated in the comments

  23. J.... B....

It's a song about emptiness. When the world and everybody you've ever tried to love has beat you down so bad that you can't feel anything anymore except sadness and anger, and anyone who tries to come into your life will experience one of those two things. No joy, no love, no nothing.

    J.... B....

    No, you're wrong.

  24. c.... ....

Jeez, this even makes you feel beat up when you are in a good mood. XD

  25. S.... E....

Most people don't discuss the topic of religion in social situations
In this vid I lay down a quick and simple take on why we do this and the implications.

    I... http://youtu.be/KldFpq0fXsc

  26. J.... L....

    Nice shoes, John.

  27. m.... ....

To anyone who's ever disliked a Mountain Goats song, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD MOUNTAIN GOATS SONG.

    m.... ....

    Going to Georgia

    m.... ....

Going to Georgia is awesome though wghat the hell

    m.... ....

going to georgia is the only mountain goats song i’ve been able to get into what’s wrong with me

    m.... ....

Every Mountain Goats songs a good Mountain Goats song, even awful Mountain Goats songs are good Mountain Goats songs

    m.... ....

Azo Tle Nelli in Tlalticpac? is actually bad though.

  28. 0.... ....

    FREEMONT TROLL!

  29. K.... F....

I don't know where that troll is, but John just turned it into a shrine.

    K.... F....

Kirk Faulkner It's in Seattle underneath the Fremont bridge! Pretty well known around here but I can't go by it without thinking about this performance.

    K.... F....

Funny thing is that I worked with a super crazy guy who lived under that bridge for a bit in his car, so when people would talk about the troll under the bridge, I would say, "you mean 'The Cucumber'?" Later I drove past it and saw they had made this sculpture. Still think of that guy, though. Very bad smelling dude.

    K.... F....

They come cheap in old Monty. Almost free.

  30. L.... ....

Song about the ice king to the chords of brandnew's brothers! brilliant!

    L.... ....

    so stupid...

  31. b.... ....

At first I'm like, hmm... that bridge looks a bit familiar. Camera pans around, oh christ it's Fremont. JD was in Fremont at the same time I was!? WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME. Clearly I need to go hang around the Troll more often.

  32. F.... ....

    This is about narcissism...hmmm

    F.... ....

I always think it's about being numb and depressed.
But maybe we all get something out of these songs in a different way.

    F.... ....

@maarten schultze Always thought it was about not feeling good enough for the person you absolutely wanna be with until death is inevitable ... and then after...

    F.... ....

I'm seeing John the 20th of April... SO EXCITED

    F.... ....

to me it seems like hes warning someone that hes a hot mess you don't want to be around and explodes every once in awhile in a violent outburst of abuse and depression

    F.... ....

    @maarten schultze
I always took it as describing that horrible self-loathing you get when you lash out at the people who you love without really knowing why

An autoclave is a kind of chamber used to sterlize lab equipment by vaporizing all traces of any and all living matter placed inside it btw- it's like 'don't get involved with me because I every positive thing sent my way I end up mangling in searing blasts of misplaced hatred', kinda self-pitying vibe imo

  33. C.... ....

10 people need their right to procreate retracted.

  34. C.... ....

My comment does describe johns performance and genius. They are musical Latin to ears trained on l33k speak. I would cut off vital body parts to be 1/10 as talented as John.

  35. c.... ....

The camera work.... leaves plenty to be desired.
Great version of this song tho

  36. S.... L....

My writing in this comment section couldn't ever be able to describe how much this song means to me and my love for both it and John for his amazing performance.

  37. R.... ....

What is the name of the statue? Does anyone know?

    R.... ....

i believe it's called the Fremont Troll

  38. K.... D....

Darnielle represents this generation of people getting burnt up on contact. The overwhelming statue just mirrors how completely fragile we are in this backdrop of human history.

  39. U.... ....

This version of the song is absolutely amazing.

  40. K.... W....

I love how real and raw he is. I can't get enough of this video, and the song. Couldn't do better!

  41. b.... ....

I know, right? I met him at the Cain's Ballroom show in Tulsa. We talked about how he'd been to Arkansas - where I'm from! - only a few times. He was totally patient and kind and really sweet. I was kind of surprised. You figure geniuses are gonna be a little aloof! A class act!

  42. c.... ....

    What a gem.

  43. J.... B....

Now I remember why I used to listen to this genre. Amazing.

  44. I.... O....

    It's in a nice neighborhood

  45. F.... M....

I wanna live in Troll avenue

  46. V.... R....

this lyrics are so good I want to write it down, not only scream it out loud but have it writen on some big huge stone in some sacred place for me like my home city

  47. B.... ....

I agree. I find it difficult to listen to the album version after this. all the emotion, and the strain.
Especially around the "I dreamed that I was perched atop a throne" and onward.

  48. L.... P....

    I still can't believe I met him.

  49. K.... C....

This man knows how to make "real music" his soul is in it! I love The Mountain Goats!

  50. b.... ....

I prefer this to the album version. It's just so raw, and the passion he puts into his live performances is fucking astounding. I hope I get to see him play someday soon.

  51. M.... R....

    think of it metaphorically

  52. C.... L....

    I relate to this song
Not the fact that my heart is an autoclave, though
    That would be weird

  53. R.... S....

    im in the southwest :/

  54. 3.... ....

    East coast tour in June...

  55. J.... ....

This sounded like a good idea when he wrote it. Not he knows it's just stupid shit. When he go to hell he will understand that opening his mouth is stupid shit.

  56. R.... S....

God I would give anything to meet John Darnielle.

  57. R.... S....

HAHAHA oh god. Thats great man.

  58. J.... B....

Well the "Maybe it's the heat in here, maybe it's the pressure" stands out to me the most :P

  59. M.... S....

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the case. The etymology I gave was for the device. Considering that this song features a speaker whose heart automatically locks others out by purging emotions, I'm pretty sure the double meaning was intentional.

  60. K.... W....

it could be interpreted into both, eh?

  61. M.... S....

Etymology: Auto - Self, Clave - Lock.

  62. G.... M....

Approximately 800 of these views are mine

  63. D.... ....

    Troll ave
The habitat of most Youtube commenters xD

  64. s.... ....

This version is better than the one recorded on the album. Fact.

  65. J.... B....

    Did anyone else tear up?

  66. s.... ....

    are you new here or

  67. k.... ....

Lovely. I just went and bought the mp3 from Amazon because of this video and a recommendation from someone on Anime News Network.

  68. F.... ....

Haha I bet you're regretting this right about now...

  69. N.... ....

Wait... Are you trying to tell THE John Darnielle how to play guitar?!

  70. b.... ....

My friend has a picture of himself standing in front of that troll statue :O

  71. C.... J....

    me too man

  72. M.... T....

i think i like this version better

  73. R.... B....

...I'm pretty sure that the uploader isn't John Darnielle.

  74. L.... ....

Your verses are stronger than your chorus, lyrically, and you have GOT to get that tremolo under control, but this is a spectacular song! I'd love to hear a two-guitar arrangement for this one. (Still acoustic, of course.)

  75. c.... ....

to bad that you can the like button only once. -_-

  76. P.... H....

"Hope I didn't frighten any children"

  77. P.... H....

Older guitar, I like his new one better. He is a preacher, telling the world how it really is

  78. R.... R....

Fremont Troll! I've slept behind that old bastard.

  79. G.... K....

Fratty 1904, I'm no hipster but is rather be that than a troll like you

  80. W.... ....

No person of intelligence think you matter. You're the person who procreates and everyone consider killing the baby to better the race. Go jerk off with your tears and die. I will not reply to you, but if you ever get any sense I have plenty of good music you should listen too.

  81. M.... ....

no, i dont assume, i know, because if you liked it you wouldnt be calling everyone who does a hipster. yeah, must be a conspiracy though, nobody actually likes this, we all listen to it because its indie. do you know how fucking stupid you sound?

  82. J.... T....

    so does this song

  83. M.... ....

you assume that anybody who likes this must be a hipster because you dont. fuck off, child.

  84. i.... ....

I'm not fucking hipster, you jackass. PBR sucks.

  85. A.... L....

so good it almost scares me... What i would have paid to be there at that moment. amazing

  86. t.... ....

i perfer this live version to the cd version :)

  87. t.... ....

i just did a bit more studying into it, and another the words auto, and clave (derived from the word clavis) mean "self" and "locking" so he is reffering to his heart as self locking in the song

  88. C.... ....

I work in a lab and autoclave things all the time and now it just gives me ~feelings whenever I use it.

  89. d.... s....

    Is that Gargantua behind him?

  90. B.... F....

I was at that concert too! That "Cut of their thumbs" was pretty vicious. And the way he tried to explain video game logic to the stuffy old people in the crowd.

  91. A.... T....

ME: This is a pretty damn good song. I wonder what an autoclave is?
    *Google Search*
WIKI:An autoclave is a device used to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure saturated steam at 121 °C.
*Remember Lyric "My heart's an autoclave."
    ME: Fuuuuuuuccckkkk

    A.... T....

Yes and the French roots of the word mean, literally, "self-nailed"--as in, in this case, to one's own lonely cross. Darnielle's lyrics go DEEP.

  92. J.... P....

    forever alone: the soundtrack

  93. S.... G....

    JD is fucking awesome.

  94. A.... S....

you, john darnielle, are god damned beautiful!

  95. M.... O....

If you get the opportunity to see him live, do it. I saw him at the Barbican in London, and you really can feel the song as he sings it, so much emotion is put into his voicing, such an amazing performer, lyricist and human being.

  96. D.... O....

    Is he from Seattle?

  97. L.... ....

Fremont Troll! <3 This video is so full of amazing

  98. j.... ....

    this is the actual song...
