Mountain Goats, The - Absolute Lithops Effect Lyrics

After one long season of waiting
After one long season of wanting
I am breaking open

My insides are pink and raw
And it hurts me when I move my jaw
But I am taking tiny steps forward

And I feel sure that my wounds will heal
And I will bloom here in my room
With a little water and a little bit of sunlight
And a little bit of tender mercy, tender mercy

The big trucks come up the highway
And the big wheels rattle my windows
And night, night comes to Texas

After one blind season alone in here
After one long, sweltering summer
I'm going to find to exit

And I will go to the house of a friend I know
And I will let myself forget
With a little water and a little bit of sunlight
And a little bit of tender mercy, tender mercy

Mountain Goats, The Absolute Lithops Effect Comments

Love this song so much... inspiring and relatable in a way a lot of songs try to be, but few achieve.

This was my theme song when I decided I needed to move. I'd been battling depression for years and felt trapped in a place that I felt was draining the life from me but this song gave me a glimmer of hope

Fun fact: lithops is the latin name for a family of plants that grow large, grey leaves to camouflage themselves as stones so that they don't get eaten. But once the drought season ends, lithops grow beautiful blooms, all white and golden and green. It's a beautiful metaphor for being a human being in general or any of these narrators on the album in particular, and such a genius song to end on.

It's probably not so much about flowering, but about how a new Lithops plant body bursts out of the old one after it has been dormant, and then the old one shrivels away. That's a rather spectacular effect.

This album wrecks me emotionally every time
