Motorhead - 1916 Lyrics
16 years old when I went to the war,
To fight for a land fit for heroes,
God on my side, and a gun in my hand,
Chasing my days down to zero,
And I marched and I fought and I bled
But I knew at the time, That a year in the line,
Was a long enough life for a soldier,
We all volunteered,
And we wrote down our names,
And we added two years to our ages,
Eager for life and ahead of the game,
Ready for history's pages,
And we brawled and we fought
And we whored 'til we stood,
Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder,
We were food for the gun, and that's
What you are when you're soldiers,
I heard my friend cry,
And he sank to his knees, coughing blood
As he screamed for his mother
And I fell by his side,
And that's how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other,
And I lay in the mud
And the guts and the blood,
And I wept as his body grew colder,
And I called for my mother
And she never came,
Though it wasn't my fault
And I wasn't to blame,
The day not half over
And ten thousand slain, and now
There's nobody remembers our names
And that's how it is for a soldier.

Unbelievable emotion in the song.. You're not human if this song doesn't move you..The atrocities of War, have we learned nothing R.I.P. Lemmy...We will ALWAYS remember your name!
Something that I like is that in the album cover you see a lot of flags, not only the british one, it looks like Lemmy respected all those soldiers who fought in WW1.
You won't be forgotten Lemmy
We are Motörhead, and we play rock n' roll
And people says that rockers don't have emotions...
Tell me the name of a modern song like this one, emotional, speaks about things that happened and sounds good
This, paschendaele (can't spell) and in Flanders field on sabaton's great war! Metal can do thought Provoking too haters!
I think I read somewhere that Lemmy would have liked to sing this live, but it just never would have fit.
thank you for putting our flag
mamma mia to you

Battle of the Somme?
2:29 almost made me cry!
1:36 such good description of war!

Great song about the Great War, even though the war to end all wars only inspired future conflict.
My band have to write a song in college based on the war, i'm the drummer, the military style drums of this is great however, a bit repetitive. Has anyone got any suggestions?
Does Motörhead have any other sad songs similar to this one?
I love that style, it's refreshing to hear Lemmy singing calmly
Dont Let Daddy Kiss Me, God Was Never On Your Side Or Till The End.
Aint no nice guy after all is well worth a listen.

Lemmy is a motorhead legend
However, I'll never forget how Ian Fraser Killmisrer passed away on Boxing day.
My Grandfather was a prisoner of war and fortunately he came home. I was fortunate enough to have got to know him as a wonderful man.

How to cry twice: first, to think about all those just 18 poor boys who were recruited to die in the battlefields, second, realize that also lemmy is no longer with us since almost 4 years...
R.I.P Lemmy.

Fuck.. this song makes me cry
Thank you guys for remembering those that lost it all for a greater good. I miss you. RIP
While working on a setlist for my band for our upcoming shows and album release show, I was looking for a cover that fit the narrative of war for the last half of the show to close the night with and I came across 1916. This song has to be the most haunting ballad I've heard in a while (besides love me forever), and I feel it would be perfect to close the show and give two tributes, the big one being all the soldiers lost in the great war, let alone The Somme, and Motörhead for being a major influence.
Great epic song! I've never heard Lemmy's voice clean. This song made me cry. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
* God on my side *.
And he didn’t believe in Him?
Uh, this song's about someone who DID believe, though.

Wir hatten dieses Lied im Geschichtsunterricht.
Hundred of thousands died for nothing. But that's the faith of the humans. The don't learn anything about that what was going wrong and their history. Twenty years later they repeated the same mistake again. But this time it was the biggest catastrophy that the world had ever seen before. And one time they will repeat it again. But now there are no survivors.
How did Einstein say?
"I don't know anything about the weapons in the third world war. But I know what kind of weapons will be used in the fourth world war: sticks and stones."
