Morrissey - Late Night, Maudlin Street Lyrics

The last night on Maudlin Street
goodbye house
goodbye stairs
I was born here
I was raised here, and
...I took some stick here
love at first sight
may sound trite
but it's true, you know
I could list the details
of everything you ever wore
or said, or how you stood that day
and as we spend the last night
on Maudlin Street, I say
"goodbye house-forever!"
I never stole a happy hour
around here
Where the world's ugliest boy
became what you see
here I am - the ugliest man
Its the last night on Maudlin Street
and truly I do love you
oh, truly I do love you
When I sleep with that picture of
you framed beside my bed
oh, it's childish and it's silly
but I think it's you in my room
by the bed (...yes, I told you it was silly...)
and I know
I took strange pills
but I never meant to hurt you
oh truly I love you
I came home late one night
everyone had gone to bed
nobody stays up for you
when you have sixteen stitches
all around your head
the last buss I missed to Maudlin Street
so, he drove me home in the Van
complaining: "Women only like me for my mind..."
don't leave your torch behind
power-cuts ahead
as we crept through the park
but no I cannot steal a pair of jeans
off a clothesline for you
but you...without clothes
oh I could not keep a straight face
me - without clothes?
well a nation turns its back and gags...
I'm packed
I am moving house
a half-life disappears today
every slag waves me on
(secretly wishing me gone
well, I will be soon
oh - I will be soon)
There were bad times on Maudlin Street
when they took you away in a police car
dear Inspector - don't you know?
don't you care?
don't you know - about Love?
Your gran died
and your mother died
on Maudlin Street
in pain and ashamed
with never time to say
those special things
I took the keys from Maudlin Street
well, it's only bricks and mortar!
and...truly I do love you
wherever you are
wherever you are

  6. R.... T....

    Late Night, Acomb Street

  7. M.... P....

Nothing is more bitter than something that's sugar coated. Morrissey never sugar coats. Life doesn't get easier or less complicated, just more meaningful and small things matter more.

  8. M.... M....

post seperation, accepting it now but still very sad

  9. f.... d....

ok with some songs being sad, but morrissey really took it too litterally

  10. 2.... ....

Still have a soft spot for this, but thank the gods Nirvana came along or Id either be dead or a pretentious wanker by now....

  11. S.... X....

Brilliant lyricist. Gorgeous voice. Such a shame he's a bigoted nutter.

  12. s.... 1....

Went back to the smiths style in this. classic moz. too bad hes a nazi

  13. C.... ....

To me this feels like a prelude to Back to the Old House, in a way.

  14. J.... L....

Truly truly I do love this song 👍

  15. N.... A....

Stephen Street: Moz, you didn't need Johnny anyway! Your first solo album will be as good as anything Morrissey/Marr came up with. Beyond this album, tho, you're on your own...

  16. r.... i....

Thank you morrissey, oh my god..

  17. k.... d....

Hee hee! i used to own two t shirts from his band one of them was " meat is murder , the other was s'#'#'t cant remember , oops Anyway i never liked the band ..then i heard this ! wow...!!!his range ...subtle ,and yet the highs ..i like this haha..

  18. A.... R....

    The best british singer ever.

  19. D.... W....

    This man.

  23. T.... ....

I never get tired of hearing this beautiful song.

  24. S.... L....

Life is about meaning not happiness!

  25. L.... R....

Only Morrissey can keep my attention. With love.

  26. R.... P....

Seems as good a song as any to be playing 14/02/19, right? Happy v-day to me...

  27. C.... R....

Remastered version was cut at the end. What a crime.

  28. S.... O....

I feel like he's the only one who's almost had a better solo album than his original band

  29. j.... w....

Got a lot of good memories of this song and entire album. It was a magical time in my life.

  30. V.... H....

One of the Best Album from MOZER 😎💙

  31. R.... ....

Like fine wine comments exponential pour into the fluted vessel.

  32. v.... g....

    Uma das minha favoritas 🔊🔊❤❤❤❤

  33. E.... V....

I cry when I listen to all the details of this song. This song reminds me of a past lover who left the country where she was raised. It was difficult for her to face such a big change. Her adolescence was difficult, and she always felt sad and alone not having friends. The words Morrissey uses in this song really makes me think of those nights when she would cry about the perils of being a teenager and not knowing what to do with life. I really hope she is better now, and a beautiful adult, just like Morrissey says, “truly I do love you..wherever you are”.

  34. M.... S....

Nothing like being drunk by yourself in central London whilst listening to this song. It was always enough to sober me up amidst being in awe of all the tall buildings and lights in the night time.

  35. j.... p....

Last night in Tinsley with mum and dad at Xmas.
    Realised this was the end

  36. c.... ....

    My favourite work of art.

  37. M.... D....

‘Every hag waves me on’ line is brilliant

    M.... D....

    HAG!!!!!

  38. S.... T....

I love the repetitive beat, sounds like the slamming of doors that resound through in an unhappy home.
“Nobody stays up for you” indeed.

    S.... T....

brilliant observation - always felt that but never made that connection

  39. A.... A....

    A masterpiece.

  40. M.... C....

    Remember when Morrissey was Morrissey??

    M.... C....

"I'm Not A Man" from 2014 is way better than this though

    M.... C....

dean b I haven’t listened to much of his stuff after Vauxhall and I.

    M.... C....

@M C Home is a question mark is fantastic well worth a listen

    M.... C....

    Moz 500 disagree strongly.

  41. S.... C....

Cybil Taylor, one day we will both transcend Maudlin Street and be reunited. P.S. Love at first sight IS trite and unsustainable. "I never stole a happy hour around here...(insert the rest)

  42. f.... ....

that distinctive durutti guitar sound though..

  43. m.... c....

Shame Morrissey couldn't keep this band together and perhaps inevitably he felt out with them. Vini Reilly and Stephen Street was perfect replacements for Marr with some wonderful guitar work on Viva Hate.

    m.... c....

matthew coombs I agree, after The Smiths these guys were a good team.

    m.... c....

    Vini is the best.

  44. N.... V....

This song's lyrics are everything I'd just love to sing to my ex (although we're great friends now), but those feelings never really go away, do they

  45. S.... B....

    My favourite

  46. S.... V....

they look you away in police car!!! Crude, real yet... astonishing!

  47. J.... G....

    Vini Reilly on guitar RULES

    J.... G....

Indeed! This and "sleep will come"...

  48. C.... ....

My favourite Morrissey lyric, Maudlin St was the name of the school in Carry on Teacher

  49. I.... ....

I love this song - when I first heard it start, I thought it might be, well, maudlin - but eventually I was teary-eyed.  Just a brilliant depiction.  "Don't leave your torch behind, a power-cut up ahead (and you might need it).  Clever and with double-edged humor.  :)

  50. H.... G....

Me without clothes a nation turns its back and gags...most touching and funny song by Smiths always brilliant

  51. L.... F....

closer to home than I'd like to admit

  52. R.... D....

Moved out of my flat today and had this in my head all day

    R.... D....

I hope that once you had your hi fi set up, you played this...

  53. E.... l....

the song talks about me !! oh God i've been tearful, maudlin, and weepy so much to a limit that costed me to lose beauty and be ugly ! i loved her so much
    i hope i marry her .
Pray for that if u see my comment please

"Burn down the disco, hang the blessed DJ, cecause the music that they constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life"

  55. R.... O....

    Duruttiesque.

  56. D.... M....

I wish the killers covered this one

    D.... M....

Fuck those annoying whiny bitches: "and my tummy luvvs sluttes, I'm mister ballsacque!"

  57. M.... S....

Why did they edit this song in later versions? Plebs. It's genius

    M.... S....

What was edited, not heard the original

  58. A.... O....

this reminds me so much of the time, the feeling of love and loss, the comfort of being sad.

  59. S.... C....

I had a car in a foreign country and was the designated driver when my military mates and I went out'; this was the song I played when they were asleep while I carried them home.

  60. m.... h....

Morrissey, a good strong man damned by the mediocre media. We will never forget you.

    m.... h....

He's a bit of a drama queen, but overall, yes, a good man.

  61. S.... V....

    Oh truly I love you!

  62. H.... K....

"I'm so miserable, and you just don't care!" -- Portia Leach

  68. j.... ....

This song gripped me in 1988, when I was 10, and made me a Morrissey fan. I am 39 now, and I have always returned to this, and other heartbreaking and life-affirming Smiths and Morrissey songs, of course, throughout the many dramas and untold horrors of my life, but all these years later, this incredible song/poem/play/work of art still seems strangely unknown to the wider world. It is a tiny - given what the world has to deal with - but noteworthy, travesty.

  69. a.... m....

    My life

  70. d.... k....

This one makes me think of Coutinho handing in a transfer request.

    d.... k....

  71. G.... P....

This song is fantabulously evocative of my growing up.

"Women only like me for my mind"?

    Church.

Sucks that I can only give one like.

There is nothing not good about this song.

    G.... P....

    Not an unbad comment  :P

  72. J.... h....

Inspector don't you know don't you know don't you care about love

  73. C.... D....

morrissey has become a jerk but this is a good song

  74. m.... g....

whoaaaa , this song is definitely my one of my favorite if not the favorite. brings back memories from millikan and grant high high in the valley in s. California. my girlfriends, and my 80's music. My memories at home. and young bloody childish boy.

  75. N.... G....

To understand this, one you must be in England living in mid 70s powercut times. With very little to light up your darkness. Tell me I'm wrong!. Don't give me some mid west American shit.

    N.... G....

Nick Gall -- Hello Nick. I am American, now 57 years old. The Smiths/Marr & Morrissey have been among my most beloved music since the early 80's. You're post intrigues me as I admit, I know almost nothing of Manchester, Maudlin Street, or the other area's of which Morrissey sings. I kindly and sincerely ask, do you know where I could read, or find video of this old city. I tell you I am envious of any person that was a youth in the 70s and 80s in Britain, only because of the terrific music that was born there, but we Americans truly do not know the hardships that triggered the anger that birthed this movement; The Greatest music in the entire history of Rock! God Bless You Sir. Brian Bosworth, Michigan, USA

    N.... G....

Brian Bosworth .My dear man. I am deeply ashamed to say,the present pc government has washed away, most if not all traces of our past. May I suggest visiting the north, especially in winter, living cheap, eating chips, from the local fish and chip shop. Then drinking in working men's clubs, whilst avoiding any southern,at all costs. We don't even have dirty Victorian factory chimneys anymore. Apart from watching the staple films of the day,a kind of loving, a taste of honey, room at the top, billy liar. Try looking up Hannah hauxwell, Fred dibnah, and the like. Whilst playing Jerusalem ,the old hymn. In England's green and pleasant land. I wish you well,my dear friend.

    N.... G....

Nick Gall : Thank You Nick. Your gracious reply is very much appreciated. I truly hope to spend an extended vacation in your homeland, and your suggestions are most helpful. I had heard rumor of a movie in production of the early life of Morrissey. I hope to catch that when available. Again, Thank You Sir. Sincerely.

  76. B.... F....

Could have said it better Amy Busch.

    B.... F....

    Still deep.atached.remain

  77. N.... G....

Sorry Americans . This song belongs in a place of northern england. A place so removed from anywhere else, little box bedrooms, old streets and smoke clued chimneys. Corner shops and chippys. Warm dandelion and burdock. Coal bunkers cheap and yet meaniful life's. We never really escape those times, nor never won't too.....

    N.... G....

I, too, enjoyed dying of the whooping cough because I worked down t'pit all day.

    N.... G....

    Piss off wanker.

I flew back from Ireland to see my pop. My sisters warned me it would be tough to see this man now. Well I tried my very best to be the son he created. We talked laughed and cried. When I said goodbye and kissed him on his head, saying I love you dad!,well I knew it was the the end of my life there forever. So walking slow up the drive in tears,I sang this under my breath. I just had to get far away. Nick Yorkshire England .

    N.... G....

Nick Gall very sad but very true as I have been in the very same position myself.

    N.... G....

that's such a beautiful sadness. But I believe is the true emotion of the song

    N.... G....

did you and your pops fall out prior to going home to yorkshire?

  81. X.... C....

The song that changed my life.... Takes me back to a dark time. But it is where I was and meant to be......and I took strange pills.
