Morrissey - I'm Not A Man Lyrics

Don Juan
Picaresque
Wife beater vest
Cold hand
Ice man
Warring cave man
Well if this is what it takes to describe...
I'm not a man

Wheeler, dealer
Mover, shaker
Casanova
Beefaroni
A-ho but lonely
Well if this is what it takes to describe...
I'm not a man
I'm not a man
I'm something much bigger and better than
A man

Wise-ass
Smart-ass
Workaholic
Thick-skinned
Two-fisted hombre, olé
Well if these are terms you'd use to describe...

Oh, I'm shaking
Look at me I'm quaking
True grit
True blue
Kill crazy
So very manly of you
You are the soldier
Who won't get much older
You are the slow Joe
Who signed up to go

Wolf down
Wolf down
T-bone steak
Wolf down
Cancer of the prostate

Ways to sit
And of course
Ways to stand
I'm not a man
I'm not a man
No big fat locker room
Hockey jock
Laughing
I'm not a man
I'd never kill or eat an animal
And I never would destroy this planet I'm on
Well, what do you think I am?
A man?

Well what do you think I am?

  2. Nicholas Sans Pasty

Mozza you confused muppet, most of the people you're speaking up for lately are criticised in this song. Meat-eating climate change denying cut and paste men that are scared stiff of not fitting a narrow stereotype. They're the ones who would have voted Farage who you endorsed even though he attends fox hunts. Mozza why do you have to be so infuriatingly contradictory lol

  7. Sindre Eliassen

    Go vegan!

    Ades999

FACT: in a glass of milk are 130+ million pus cells, hormones, antibiotics, feces etc.

  8. I Do Monologues

I actually love the opening ambience. Maybe I'm just old haha Just nice to have a bit of a break.

  9. Jose Javier Ojeda Cervantes

    LEGENDARY

  10. Steven Voynow

    "wolf-down, wolf down t-bone steak; wolf-down, wolf-down, cancer-of-the-prostate".....

  11. Underground Studio

    Love Love

  12. Juliana Rodríguez

    Exquisite!!!

  13. Marco Aletti

    Bellissima

  14. Charles Taylor

The beat poet Harold Norse wrote a poem named "I'm Not a Man" back in 1972. Morrissey may have gotten his inspiration from that poem.

  15. Chris Carey

    Ingenious statement.

  16. truemansparks

This for me could be my favourite Morrisey album, definitely creeping up there

  17. Trevoirio

This record brings me to the edge of tears. A great example of says what many people have felt deeply (including myself) since the year dot. Great to sing loudly in the car.

  18. Balchinder Johal

    Morrissey at his best

    Balchinder Johal

  19. Ron Anguiano

I've been all of the above, much to my consternation, All that has come of it is a lonely broken heat and being a disabled veteran,

  20. Russell Lamberg

    Awesome!

  21. Jason Morrissey

Very poorly constructed song from morrissey here, unusual

  22. John Spencer

He did not have cancer of the esophagus. He had Barrett's esophagus which can sometimes be a precursor to cancer if not treated. It is a result of GERD which is caused by a hiatal hernia, very common. Has nothing to do with diet.

  23. Mar Torreblanca

This is the Morrisseiest song ever.

    Myles Co.

In terms of describing him, definitely. In terms of actual song structure, not really.

  24. zeroual marylin

will i be still alive since the smiths? you, ll never know.....

  25. Monicahotts Productions

I love all the songs on this album except Oboe Concerto

    Inika Inika

OMG Oboe Concerto is AMAZING! I didn't like the album much when I first heard it but it creeps on you. Love it ALL NOW SO MUCH!

  26. Virginia Reed

    Nice picture!

  27. Jimmy Finn

Fearless in his lyrics. A true punk.

    Cat Walk

Yes spot on he is a true punk. Using foul language and dying your hair blue is not punk

  28. Méchant Manu

    God this is good !

  29. Joshua Newland

Morrissey putting a bullet into the head of every Juice-bro, Fuckboy out there.

  30. Steven Voynow

you are the soldier who won't get older you are the soldier who signed up to go-ooo-oh-woo my nephew joined the army last year

  31. Josephine

    Morrissey!!!!

  32. BurtSampson

    B. Faroni

  33. Yannis Tjanetis

This is an excellent album, but i believe this song to be incredible.....gut-wrenching and chilling lyrics, sung with power and passion. One of his very best - one of the many reasons why he is a God..

  34. Candice Alonzo

A fucking masterpiece! All hail Moz🙌🏼

  35. katoness

Whats with the intro, ffs, takes over a minute to kick in.

    UTskier2008and2009

    Morrissey, he has a band

    UTskier2008and2009

an amasing band, gonna be in Reno soon

  36. I Do Monologues

Screaming at the end is similar to meat is murder. I suppose this is the 30th anniversary of The Smiths. There are probably loads of references in the album you don't catch at first. "The Black peat of the hill... When I was still ill". Maybe I should go back to Vauxhall and Quarry too...

  37. Xenia Kakaki

This man, his music, his lyrics...always give me chills. God bless you, Morrissey. You are a true miracle in my life.

    kevxxxedge

One of the best to have ever done it...

    UTskier2008and2009

I grew up on beefaroni....in a can...it will kill me and the planet

    I Do Monologues

    *b e e f a r o n i*

  42. Quentin Crisp

The tune is good, but the lyrics are trite. I say that as someone who has sympathy with the general sentiment. Regarding not destroying the planet he's on, I wonder what the carbon footprint of his endless touring is. You can't just hold a hand to your heart and say, "I'm innocent" because you want to be.

    keith lynch

exactly but none of us get off scott free

    Quentin Crisp

+keith lynch This is true, but I think he's trying to get off scott free in these lyrics. Not something he's always done.

    tj2104

+Quentin Crisp I think it's an important part of the song actually; how many people want to identify to the traditional macho image? There's a sadness (no jokes please) when he sings 'I'd never destroy this planet I'm on' - this could be the anthem of someone who realises, for all their non-male traits, they actually still conform to the masculine agenda.

    I Do Monologues

+tj2104 I think it just means he takes the recycling out every Thursday.

    dean b

He's hardly Madonna dragging a stadium worth of sets around the world

  43. A B

I dislike the tune, but the lyrics for this are fantastic.

    A B

    I hate anime, mate.

    TheMonkeesRock

Nearly Mellow Er, you all changed your profile photo

    A B

I kind of had a little breakthrough:
Hating anime and having an anime profile picture is a silly, silly idea!

    Colin Surname

The Death Note name mightn't help.

    A B

I figure it's slightly more subtle; one can lie and say it's about poetry or the endless meaningless of existence.

  44. Chloe Burns

    LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEE

  45. guldmilla

UM  imo best morrissey song! & there are too too many GREAT morrissey songs= wow! perfection!

  46. David R Mellor

I remember my father showing me underneath a body of a car and feeling nothing but desperate boredom and surrounded by those  fake brutal images of what a male was supposed to be then I read danced and wrote and realised one can die for football and the arts and beauty and crave for higher things.. and yes I’m still a man listen and love

    Jimmy Finn

Understand your sentiment, but working on a car, or, let's say, cooking in a kitchen, are very useful to anyone who....eats, or drives a car.

  47. David Stewart

This song is up there with most of Your Arsenal and Vauxhall,

    hundredhighways

+David Stewart never been able to dig Your Arsenal

    David Stewart

    @hundredhighways Any time mate ;)

    Jason Morrissey

David Stewart no wayyyyyy, how dare u

    dean b

It's up there but "We''ll Let You Know" and "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" are his masterpieces

  48. Daniel Ramirez

Just love this new sound if morrissey he sounds so different from Viva Hate to Years of Refusal

    I Do Monologues

+Daniel Ramirez That's like his entire solo career haha

    Melissa Patterson

exit of alain whyte cowriter and guitarist and mike farrell the keyboard guy, and addition of jesse tobias on gutair and the walker brothers on bass and drums. whew! had to look all that up hope it's accurate. the biggest thing is exit of whyte who took credit for cowriting tons of brilliant morrissey songs

  49. Je Arango

    FUCK YEAH!!! ;D wiiiiii

  50. Sara s

This looks like a Banksy work :)

  51. dublinirishkelt

Wolf down a tbone steak...that i would im starving with a dose of the munch

  52. mathilda regnér

  53. beer shark

  54. Anna Craca

    I love this man!

  55. HeliomasterAtrox

What a HYMN!!! Very, very powerful andt touching song. Thanks for share :)

  56. Oliver C1649

Notice the way he over emphasizes the H in wheeler dealer. Isnt it just like Stewie in family guy and the Cool Whip incident?

    Anna Corradini

    Hahahahahahahaha! You are right! Ahahahahahahaha!

    TheMonkeesRock

Moz always did that. A lot of people do that. Don't see why you compare him to a cartoon that make fun of the way people speak. It's a normal way to say it like that.

    LuReis Smith

    The king is well!

    Laura Cruz

  60. diane sykes

I actually love all the racket at the end...:-)

  61. S B

This is epic, his delivery is incredible. Apart from the racket at the end... :) I agree.

Reminds me of Life is a Pigsty or Trouble Loves me as stand out tracks on their albums. Except this is a much better album....

  62. cricketbat08

Apart from the racket at the end, this is amazing.

    Raelsalmacis

    Racket?!
That's an amazing part of the song :)

  63. MsJaccat

Thank Gawd for Morrissey again & again, Amen.

  64. Mike

    He's done it again, brilliance!

  65. Rob B

This is a prime example of what makes Moz great and why he's a legend.

    Jimmy Finn

Fearless in his stance. You're right.

    Atlant Paladin

you are writing it under all Mozs songs?

  66. rael1999

You certainley weren't at the Liverpool gig !

  67. ShyLivesMatter

"Wiseass, smartass, workaholic.  Thick skinned, 2 fisted hombre, ole."  Fuck all that Alpha Male, Social Darwinist, macho, hardass bullshit and a society that would expect me to be that way.  This song says everything I ever wanted to say to those people.  Thank you Moz.  Though I'm not  veg, so he'd still probably hate me (sorry) lol

    keith lynch

+SilentLaughter8 I get it but your still a hypocrite

    ShyLivesMatter

    @keith lynch
Um....ok?  How so?  Because I like to eat meat?

I get how you might feel that way, but still...why so judgmental?  At least I'm conflicted about it and admit as much.  Just like the dude in that Warm Bodies movie lol  Never said I was perfect.  But that's why I respect people like Temple Grandin for inventing more "humane" ways for cattle to be processed.  However, my brother is a vegetarian and has said the main reason is because of the way the animals are treated, which I can certainly respect.  Its a decision each of us need to make for ourselves.

Anyway, if you think about it, each human being is a series of seeming contradictions.  Its what makes us human and gives us individual personalities, flaws, and quirks.  And anyone who'd deny that, I'd have to wonder what they're hiding and why.  Everyone's a little messed up, I think.  Its the so-called "normal" ones we need to watch out for, I think :-)

And if your post had nothing to do with eating meat, I apologize for all the "rambling" :-)  Though I'm still curious what it would be about, as I'm trying to be brave and put myself out there to people, which isn't easy for me, so your post did come off a little judgmental.

    ShyLivesMatter

    +Mettemeres
Thanks for your post - sorry I'm so late getting back to you.  Hope you see this.

Just read your post now...figured the posts would just be people hating on me as per usual.  And as an avoidant personality and someone who's still very sensitive and impressionable, probably due to undiagnosed developmental disorders, probably due to childhood traumas (posted more about that elsewhere here just now), I don't have time for that shit.

Life's too short to put bad thoughts and feelings into my head like that.  So if people really have something to say to me they want me to read, they should PM me here like another Smiths fan recently did.  But luckily I was only half right and your positive post more than counterbalanced the negative :-)

The documentary was called Man in the Mirror: Michael Jackson Story.  The documentary itself actually wasn't that great, but I do like how it portrayed Michael as a highly sensitive, empathic soul that I related to very much.  One part I really liked was when his friend was like "Does Lisa Marie make you feel more like a man?"  And Michael says: "No, she makes me feel like I only have to be myself."  Something like that.  And I was like "Yes!  That's it!"  Exactly how I feel.  Just be yourself.  Who cares how "manly" or whatever it is or what others think.

And yeah, I totally get what you're saying.  I think its especially ridiculous when females say things like "be a man", "man up", etc.  Easy for them to say lol  They don't have to do it themselves or know how much pressure it is.  How would they feel if I told them "woman up"? lol  There'd probably be riots in the streets!  So yeah, a little empathy goes a long way - thanks again for your reply :-)

    ShyLivesMatter

    @keith lynch
Or maybe you mean why do I preach positivity and nonviolence yet still feel so angry toward your typical alpha male type macho dudes?  Well, like I said in my other post, we're all a web of seeming contradictions.  We're all human and not perfect.  We all have things that piss us off.

Though my brother didn't understand this about me either.  Pretty fucked up when your own family doesn't understand or support you (which I also posted about elsewhere here), eh?  Makes it even harder to make it in this world considering the challenges a guy like me already faces.  Yet here I am somehow, still standing for another day.  So I shut that shit down quick.

We all have "triggers" based on past traumas we've suffered, etc.  And one thing I will NOT "suffer" is a bully.  Those who look down on the weak, prey on them,....  They've fucked up my life too much so I have ZERO tolerace or empathy towards them.  Bullying is WRONG.  End of story.

So if I can stand up to people like that here, in my own way, then at least I'm doing something.  Which is better than nothing, which is what I used to do (and hate myself for it).  So thank God for the internet.  But yeah, basically, bullies taught me how NOT to treat others.  So am I a hypocrite about this?  Maybe.  But I hope that (either of my answers) helps clear things up as to why :-)

    ShyLivesMatter

Ok, so I guess he's not going to reply back.  Any other know-it-all jackasses want to tell me why I'm a hypocrite or pretentious or any of that horseshit?  Or if not, at least stick up for me here? lol  Been through enough crap for multiple lifetimes, so I don't appreciate being judged like that.  Trying to be brave and put myself out there, but I feel like I'm talking to myself :-/  Thanks for liking my first post at least though, you all (who did).  "Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep".

  68. Fabrizio Dorantes

  70. Alex Bag

I'm not a man...I'm something much bigger and better

  71. Albert Fisk

    (@therealMURDEROTIC writing from this account)
Evan M, I could not reply to your comment. But he is not singing of what makes a man. He's saying that these are not things that decide if you are a man or not.
He's singing "Well if these are terms you'd use to describe...".

  72. John Semenowicz

Another great song from his new album. "No big fat locker room
    Hockey jock"
    Wolf down T-bone steak
    Wolf down
    Cancer of the prostate
Only morrissey could write such lyrics
