Morissette, Alanis - Woman Down Lyrics
First woman down was your mother
She did condone how you behave
All you could see was your father
His disrespect was in her face
Next woman down was your sister
She took her cues from the climate
And never knew another way
Who do you take me for?
Calling all woman haters
We’ve lowered the bar on the
Behavior that we will take – come on now
Calling all lady haters
Why must you vilify us?
Woman down
Next woman down was your lover
She takes your spite at value face
Even her hair length and color
Gives you the impulse to repeat
Who do you take me for?
Calling all woman haters
We’ve lowered the bar on the
Behavior that we will take — come on now
Calling all lady haters
Why must you vilify us?
Are you willing to clean the slate? — woman down
Woman down
Woman down
Next woman down is your daughter
A stranger to being debased
She has a new lease and limit
On the abuse she’ll tolerate
Who do you take me for?
Calling all woman haters
We’ve lowered the bar on the behavior that we will take — come on now
Calling all lady haters
Why must you vilify us
Are you willing to clean the slate? — woman down
Woman down

<3 the song and the sentiment
I think of it this way, if the bar is lowered less can get through. She's saying she's saying we aught to accept less of this bad behaviour.
The bar refers to standards and expectations. If a bar is lowered it means the standards have been lowered. "We've lowered the bar on the behavior we will take". It implies that women have allowed themselves to be treated worse. So you're half correct. She wants you to accept better behavior and raise the bar.
I call this Sister Blister part two! I love both songs!
THAT WAS DAMN AWESOME! Thanks!!!

Yes, that's what I said. Women have, but won't allow it anymore. LOL
No, she's saying that, as of now, WOMEN have lowered the bar on the abuse that they have taken. In other words, they won't take anymore abuse, or at least not as much as they used to take in the past.
Luna Angel this is how I interpreted it as well
Great song i love it!!
these lyrics are really lame and stupid.
yeah Baby!
No problem. LOL
Ah, yes it does! When you hear the word " have" for the first time, it's a bit confusing because you think she's using it in the "past" tense. Thanks again!
Thank you for the reply! Uhh, yes, I think so? Lemme listen to the lyrics again :)
@adventuresofsamy, I'm not sure how well I can explain this, but she isn't saying we should lower the bar, she's saying we HAVE. As in we allow ourselves to be treated horribly, and we should fix it and lift the bar higher. "We've lowered the bar on the behavior that we will take." Make sense?
good song! a few big words I had to look up. I'm confused though, why would we lower the bar for behavior? Wouldn't we hold a high standard for the behavior we will take?
adventuresofsamy my understanding is "we've lowered the bar on the behavior that we will take" whereas bar is like a threshold or a maximum point. So in this case she's saying they've lowered the threshold or maximum point on how much behavior they'll tolerate, meaning they will tolerate less toxic behavior before the limit or "bar" is reached.
Thank u... really good song!!!
