I agree their first 3 albums are some of the best metal albums ever recorded but i just love the pure utter chaos of altars its just a adrenaline packed joyride through the very deps of hell with lord satan as your co-pilot. Blessed are the sick and covenant are also fantastic albums but altars will always be my favorite.

I love it now but oddly enough Altars took me the longest to properly get into. I always found the production a bit too polished for such extreme music. For that reason I was drawn more to the murky, darker sound of Blessed and Covenant than the streamlined Altars. Also vocally I prefer Vincent's deeper vocals on the former compared to his early raspy vocals.

That said Altars is a masterpiece, I just never see it as miles above the rest like many fans. It's undeniable that their first three albums are absolute classics and hold up to this day...even now it's some of the most thrilling and intriguing death metal I've heard.

For me, it's Covenant. Everything gelled here...it was still barbaric, but also refined and exotic. Brilliant songs, even more brilliant chops. Top shelf.

With that more tamed direction though came much sturdier and controlled song-structures.

Seriously, the amount of memorable and catchy riffs these guys released on their first 3 LPs is astounding.

I love how even though the record was barbaric, it was also more refined and exotic. To me this made it far more intense.

This album was perfect. Pete Sandoval was on fire... Trey's playing was top notch, and Dave's vocals were the best they've ever been.

I think it's funny when people talk shit of this album because Morbid around the time was getting shit on MTV. Morbid Angel recieving MTV time doesn't amount to this album sounding anymore or less underground. This is a classic and an essential piece of Death Metal.
