Moore, Christy - Green Island Lyrics

The island lies like a leaf upon the sea
Green island like a leaf new-fallen from the tree
Green turns to gold
As morning breeze gently shakes the barley
Bending the yellow corn
Green turns to gold
There's purple shadows on the distant mountains
Sun in the yellow corn

They came in their long ships from lands across the sea
They came in their long ships – they saw the land was green
Wind in the barley
Trout and salmon leaping in the rivers
Sun in the yellow corn
Leaping ashore
They slaughtered those laboured in the barley
Scything them down like corn

The long ships sailed away and new invaders came
With long bow and lance bringing death in England's name
With sword and with mace
They went reaping though the fields of barley
They plundered the yellow corn
Crop followed crop
They prospered in their killing fields of barley
The harvest of new young corn

Marching down the years the men of war they came
With bombs, assassins, bullets, CS gas and guns
Ghosts from the past
Are chasing shadows through the fields of barley
Hiding in the new young corn
Nine hundred years
They tried to trap the wind that shakes the barley
Sun in the yellow corn

The island lies like a leaf upon the sea
Green island like a leaf new-fallen from the tree
Green turns to gold
As morning breeze gently shakes the barley
Bending the yellow corn
No force on Earth
Can ever trap the wind that shakes the barley
Sun in the yellow corn

No force on earth can ever trap the wind that shakes the barley or the sun in the yellow corn . This is the most artistic and polite way of saying Fuck you to imperialism be it British , American or European the Gaelic spirit can never be extinguished .

Im perplexed as to why theres a shoddy drawing of a coconut-laden palm tree under the title on the image??

Genau nach dem Lied such ich schon so lange, eben weil wir es auch damals im Englisch-Unterricht hatten. Schön, dass ich es endlich gefunden habe :)

@Poloduaill Christy never wrote this song. It was written for him by Ewan MacColl, and as far as I know it was the last song he ever wrote, just shortly before he died. It's not about the IRA. It's about the spirit of land and people as one.

@harsishava Pardon me. When I said "IRA" I should have said "IRA and the nations resistance fighters". The longships refers to the vikings by the way and not the English.

@cinnamonbrandylite Its about the IRA they were the wind that shakes the barley, you cant see the wind that shakes the barley only the movement

    no force on earth
why do we keep trying then?
seeding clouds and calling the rain ours
cutting them down, then selling the cut flowers

I love this song, too - my mother is from Ireland, we used to go there on holiday. Always loved Christy Moore, from Lisdoonvarna to Wandering Aongus.

this is heaven, this is hell - who cares, who can tell?

anyone for the last few choc ices, now.
