Moody Blues, The - What Child Is This Lyrics

What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap, is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The babe, the son of Mary

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary
The babe, the son of Mary
The babe, the son of Mary

    None better than this.

So beautiful! Justin, the voice of an angel. So sad this song did not get any airplay. First time hearing it on You Tube. It deserves to be a classic, like all the other Christmas songs. Stunningly beautiful! A holiday classic from now on for me.

  3. g.... w....

i have this on a compilation cd. always liked it. surprised it wasnt included on december maybe radio doesnt play it because they dont know about it? its a rare recording but not impossible to find

  4. o.... ....

Maybe this song's greatest version in history

  5. M.... N....

Though I'm an atheist, I find Justin's voice and this rendition very moving.

  6. v.... ....

Excellent version of this Holy song.

  7. T.... H....

This is the best version of this song I've ever heard!

  8. B.... B....

Was at a concert in December 2003 in Reading PA when they introduced this album. Play it every year. Can't believe that was 13 years ago.

  9. D.... G....

    Stunning!

  10. R.... M....

A wonderful version of this song. Why haven't I heard it on the radio during the holiday season?

  11. J.... C....

It should have been included on the December album.

    J.... C....

A natural thought, but artistically balanced the album to make the general spiritual tone more subtle, and therefore a less traditional Christmas album. I think it was wise not to include, but I'm still surprised, like you.

  12. i.... ....

God that is beautiful and I love that song it is one of my favorites and they have done such a great job, I am all set for xmas now beautiful

    Really pretty.

  17. G.... 9....

this tune was never lost! It's called Greensleeves and is very popular in Britain It's said to have been written by Henry the Eighth for Ann Boleyn. The lyrics of course have been changed and Dustin wrote his own.

  18. H.... C....

    Very, very good...wonderful!!!

  19. B.... P....

    That is another best ever!

  20. m.... ....

  24. M.... H....

Just beautiful!  Justin sings so full of love for his Lord Jesus, along with such a humble spirit! How very, very beautiful!

    M.... H....

    Hi Margaret,

You speak of Justin's love for Jesus. I hope you are right.
Do you know him (Justin)? I can find no sources that point him to anything but TM (transcendental meditation).

    Merry CHRISTmas !!

    Keith Webb
    Ohio/USA

    M.... H....

@Keith Webb , yes, Justin is Christian - and I'm fairly certain that he no longer practices transcendental meditation.

    M.... H....

@Kathleen Minton you've warmed my heart - thank you !!

  25. N.... ....

On or around this date in 1970 I called up Neal Boortz on a local AM talk show in ATL GA and sang this for him, I was then 10 years old.

He told me not to give up my day job.
    I replied, "you too."
He listened, the one and only time in his life he shut up and listen to a caller.

    N.... ....

    Great story! :)

  26. H.... M....

Still ring sound off my family???

  27. T.... ....

"What Child Is This" was derived years from "Greensleeves" ages ago - the Moodies were not the first ones to record it. There's a lovely version by Mark Lindsay with slightly different lyrics - "Nail's spear shall pierce him through; the cross be borne for me, for you; hail hail the word made flesh..." --pretty heady stuff. It's on Youtube but the system doesn't allow me to post a link on a reply - you can search for it.

  28. D.... G....

Geez, really is this track not on December? I'm gonna check my CD when I get home.

  29. C.... M....

Love this version. The Moodies "December" is the only Christmas cd released by a Rock/Pop group that sounds as if it actually deserves to be included among the traditional Standards of the season. Thanks so very much for sharing.

  30. I.... ....

Jesus Christ wasn't born on December 25. It is, however, the date on which His birth is celebrated.

  31. B.... E....

    What a beautiful song!

  32. R.... S....

I found this on a cassette tape I had seen at the now long gone Pay less (Not the shoe stores) I had seen it in December of 1995. I don't remember the title of the album but it was a compilation of Christmas songs from several artists.

  43. L.... R....

Of course Justin does this amazingly...He is a fabulous tenor and will tell you his very beginnings of singing was in church! Beautiful rendition of one of my favorite Christmas songs...wish he would do O"holy Night!

  44. C.... N....

    great version!

  45. M.... N....

    @lightlyone THATS HIS VOICE!

  46. P.... N....

i like this song.i will singing it to the school

  47. D.... W....

@lightlyone Hi, this is definitely Justin, I've seen them over 400 times over the last 10 years... however I know what you mean, when the guys record with different producers they sound a bit different. On some of the things Justin has done with other artists (Mario Frangoulis and Alan Simon) his voice is more showcased than with Moodies stuff and he sounds even more amazing than usual!

  48. T.... ....

This is my absolute favorite Christmas song.

  49. K.... ....

Love this song! We're singing this in chorus and this (besides Boheimian) always gets stuck in my head! Not that I don't want it to, I mean who wouldn't?

  50. c.... ....

    @lightlyone

Maybe it's just me, but it does sound like the later Moody Blues.

  51. o.... p....

I love the way Justin's voice sounds so tender here.

  52. T.... ....

@lightlyone This is a legitimate charity recording that has been reissued on many different CDs, and it really is the Moody Blues.

  53. c.... ....

    @MatthewJWWilliams

    me neither

  54. I.... M....

i have to sing this song hehe x

  55. J.... ....

INCREDIBLE VERSION OF ONE OF THE BEST SONGS NOT JUST CHRISTMAS SONGS OF ALL TIME!!

  56. T.... ....

This WAS released on a bunch of charity CDs containing songs by different artists. I just posted a link to my website in the video comments - you can click on the link and go to a page that has detailed scans of the different CDs. Maybe you can one of them online sometime!

  57. m.... ....

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (August 15, Mary, Mother of Our Lord), we sang this as the Hymn of the Day. It is #296 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Sort of odd to be singing this in hot August.

  58. s.... ....

    buteful song

  59. X.... ....

  60. R.... ....

  67. M.... ....

    BEAUTIFUL!! Happy Birthday Jesus!

  68. b.... ....

Not bad but I prefer a more traditional way of it being sung

  69. K.... M....

This is a beautiful rendition - the singer enunciates the words so well. Usually the words are are barely recognizable. Very, very nice. Merry Christmas and God bless the person who put this up.

  70. G.... ....

I'm dancing to this song!!!! YAY!

  71. L.... J....

Beautiful rendition of a classic. I also never realized the Moody Blues have ever done any Christmas music. Thank you for posting. Merry Christmas and God bless.

  72. B.... P....

Richtig erkannt. Allerdings hat mir dieses Lied von den Moody Blues gefehlt; deshalb freu ich mich über die Einstellung. Danke.

  73. A.... ....

    Really?
    ....

  74. M.... ....

Hey! this is an old renaissance folk song with christian modified lyrics! ITS Greensleeves. I post part the lyrics for the ones who want to listen to the original:

Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
    To cast me off discourteously.
For I have loved you well and long,
    Delighting in your company.

    Greensleeves was all my joy
    Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

  75. T.... L....

Yeah, man All the big guns did gospel wny not apply these, the best of the best to that task? and then...add a little modernity with an interpretation at the end of each.l

  97. T.... ....

Longtime fans of the Moody Blues know that they had a lot of problems with fans in the late 60's and early 70's who thought they were messiahs or visionaries conveying great religious and philosophical knowledge. People tried to worship the band directly, which the members tried to avoid. This kept them from expressing any religious views in music for many years.

  98. m.... ....

    Beautiful!
