Moody Blues, The - What Am I Doing Here Lyrics

Pale the young squire who goes to fight
To die at his master's side
Living is just a dream inside
You ask me why he cried
"What am I doin' here?"
"What am I doin' here?"

Beautiful princess, fair and pale
Stares out across the sea
Alone in her castle dark and grey
Her love she'll never see
"What am I doin' here?"
"What am I doin' here?"

Tenderly bury the fair young dead
Place a wooden cross at his head
All the words you can say
Have been said
It's for you my tears are shed

What can be done, you won't believe
Listen and you may see
Everyone's dream is deep within
Find it and you'll be free
"What am I doin' here?"
"What am I doin' here?"

Tenderly bury the fair young dead
Place a wooden cross at his head
All the words you can say
Have been said
It's for you my tears are shed

Tenderly bury the fair young dead
Place a wooden cross at his head
All the words you can say
Have been said
It's for you my tears are shed

  4. B.... T....

Ah, The Moody Blues: made this life more worth living for me...

  5. p.... ....

Beautiful song. Love the 2nd part even more, with the gorgeous John Lodge's backing vocal.

  6. S.... H....

Great Justin Hayward song! Such evocative, emotional lyrics such a strong melody! It creates pictures in my mind!

  7. B.... B....

such a pleasure to mingle and share with those captivated like i am with this band! the plus 5 was always perceived by my smoke circle to be the "gems and the end" after listening to the entire double record set! ( hidden secrets revealed in song listeners ).."everyone's dream is deep within, find it and you'll be free"

  8. J.... r....

Oh that angelic voice of Justin.

  9. C.... H....

Why didn't one of us (that's Moodies fans) send a copy of this to Peter Jackson when he was scoring Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit? Failing that is there a genius amongst us that can re-score with Moodies music? In the 1970's there was a remake of Lost Horizon - just after Seventh Sojourn was released. It would have fitted perfectly...... Time for a Moody Blues Musical???

  10. W.... C....

Mike and Graham looked like brothers, then.

  11. S.... A....

"QUESTION" I AM ALWAYS ALONE IN MY CASTLE.....WHY ????

  12. c.... s....

Pinder's mellotron makes this song so compelling and rich..

  13. s.... ....

Recorded in 1968. A year of psychedelic romanticism in all the arts, for sure. The Moody's were one of the heralds of that Thyme of Renaissance Faires...

  14. R.... D....

    Música linda e inspiradora.

  15. S.... A....

LIVING IN THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE....I AM TRYING NOT TO LET IT SHOW.....WHO WOULD BELIEVE ME ANYWAY IF I WERE TO TELL THEM WHAT I KNOW....WHAT I HAVE LEARNED ON THIS PLANET........I AM......😇😇😇😇💖💖💖💖💖💖💫💫💫💫💫💫🌷🌷

  16. T.... V....

Always loved this song. Isn't it great to be a real music lover and find a gem you like on your own. Disregarding Big Brother and instead, thinking and being yourself.

  17. A.... E....

Tan especial canción de aquellos tiempos gracias Moody's

  18. R.... P....

Can’t understand why more singers don’t cover Hayward’s songs. They’re really missing out. Bee Gees are covered like there was no tomorrow, why not the Moodies??

    R.... P....

MAYBE BECAUSE OTHER ARTIST DON'T SEE WHAT WE OBSERVE....👽👽👽💖💖💫💫🚀🚀🚀🙏🙏🙏

    R.... P....

I do covers of them at open mics. This song is one of them, in fact!

    R.... P....

LOVELY....THANK YOU FROM "THE MOODY BLUES"

  19. J.... ....

Originally, this song was written by Justin Hayward in protest of the Viet Nam War...but the characters have been changed... it is about Lord of the Rings characters. John K. ....a Moody Blues fan who has a loyal fan since 1965, the hit, "Go Now" with the late Clint Warwick and Denny Laine, of Paul McCartney & Wings.

  20. E.... B....

    ........why 6 Dislikes......?!?!?!?!?

    E.... B....

There will always be haters.. unreal.

    E.... B....

@Rog Rabbit It Goes to Show, Their Taste for GREAT MUSIC CLEARLY DOESN'T EXIST........!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. M.... D....

one of only a very very few Hayward tunes that do not have a guitar solo...... - also King and Queen

  22. M.... D....

Tenderly Bury the fair young dead.... interesting -- from 1866 - a poem -"Tenderly bury the fair young dead, Pausing to drop on his grave a tear; Carve on the wooden slab o er his head,

    "Somebody s darling slumbers here."

    CAROLINE AUGUSTA BALL

    M.... D....

Wow...thanks for that insight. So cool to know the reference.

    M.... D....

    😢😢😢😢😢😢😢💖💖💖💖💖💖👽👽👽👽👽👽💫💫💫🚀🚀🚀🚀

  23. J.... ....

"What am I doing here?" in the physical sense I often ask. Yet, whenever I absorb the Moodie's tunes into my mind, it takes the 'edge-off' where I reside.

  24. E.... B....

.......Is This The ULTIMATE QUESTION THAT'S ASKED........?!?!?!?!?!?

  25. J.... J....

I often wonder 'What am I doing Here?'. Thank you Moodies/Justin Hayward for being such inspirational company along the road to finding, being 'Here' whatever that really means decades later in life?. Societal conventions/protocols usually lead to 'questions' posed to an emotional intelligence which the few are tuned into. The Moodies/Justin Hayward were that emotional intelligence which posed those questions,
embraced by many fans. Thank you!!!

  26. E.... B....

    ......... only one word......... BEAUTIFUL.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    E.... B....

    .........and AMEN..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. D.... F....

Hayward's vocal melody in this song is just unstoppable. I don't think people fully appreciate how skilled of a vocalist he was - and still is for that matter! It's incredible he can still sing these songs to this day. Even Robert Plant can't say the same.

    D.... F....

Totally agree! Justin's a legend and well deserved the spot on the R n R Hall of Fame.

    D.... F....

    AGREED....😇😇💖💖👽💫💫🚀🌟🌟🌟

    D.... F....

    Agree wholeheartedly

  28. p.... g....

Ca y est, grace à vous, j'ai fait une rechute, car je réécoute les Moody blues et avec toujours le même plaisir et je ne trouve aucun déchets dans leurs créations. Merci de m'avoir remis dans le chaudron.

    p.... g....

Aww well I happen to be online right now and I'm glad you enjoy the Moody Blues, Thank you for your amazing comment and let's keep true rock alive. :) Long Live Good Music. Peace 'n Love!

    p.... g....

Merci et longue et belle vie à vous!

  29. I.... D....

1968 great year for Justin and John.

  30. v.... ....

Wow...another great song unheard by my ears by one of the Best bands we will ever know. This is Gold... wish I had all the albums they made together and their solo ones. I've missed so much of their music...Finally got their induction onto RRHOF where we All knew they belonged years ago. So sad Ray wasn't there, but I know his spirit was.

  31. A.... W....

Moody's trivia: name their only album with a title track. (not including their first album called ' The Moody Blues Go Now )

    A.... W....

    Al Warner ....

A QUESTION OF BALANCE .... [my 1st guess]

    A.... W....

A question of Balance...1970...The year Justin married his model wife, Marie!

  32. A.... W....

one of their best, why it waited to be released as a +5 , not sure, maybe it did not fit any of the 'theme' albums

  33. M.... J....

The combination of front-line music & lyrics rarely imagined set The MOODIES upon a path that lasted 50+ years ....

A roller coaster ride over/through incredible changes in public opinion .... But .... They pulled through ....

Recalling a concert in Fort Lauderdale FL ~1993/4 (?) ....

Justin commented at mike that there were 4 generations of fans in attendance .....

Pues .... They've added another generation or two since then and finally inducted into R&R Hall Of Fame !

  34. E.... B....

The MOODY BLUES MUST Be in the ROCK HALL this year..... Another Long OVERDUE Group that earned its Entitlement HANDS DOWN...🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊

    D.... R....

reese colbo it's ok. The guys will always be near and dear to my heart. Excuse the name and picture, it's the result of my sister,s rather morbid sense of humor

    D.... R....

  47. K.... ....

This is one of my top five favorite songs by the Moody Blues. Such sad and beautiful stories.

    K.... ....

+KatieNRich Always thought of this song the same way. :)

    K.... ....

+Rog Rabbit .... Still gives me chills from it's musical beauty and meaningful lyrics...

  48. p.... g....

J'aime la musique des Moody Blues, on ressent de l'émotion, du sentiment en l'écoutant, il faut avoir un sacré talent pour créer de telles choses. Merci pour le partage

    p.... g....

    +pacreau gérard Je vous remercie!

    p.... g....

    oui oui

  49. R.... D....

History, for sure. Sad. I believe in hope. I pray for peace, but it seems mankind will never learn.

  50. m.... ....

    I love this one!

  51. C.... R....

Ah, The Moodies. Not only pioneering symphonic rock, but pretty much inventing the goth vibe, as well. Plus, Justin Hayward is probably the most criminally underrated singer/guitarist ever.

    C.... R....

    It's true...they were all underated

    C.... R....

I wouldn’t associate them with goth, at all. They’re much more upbeat.

  52. T.... V....

Wouldn't it be great if they pulled this gem out and performed it live in concert.  Sadly they never will as they pretty much have played basically the same set for countless years.  Still great live but just wish they'd mix it up a bit.

  53. c.... f....

agreed !john lodge is very underated bass player...glad to see someone thinks like me!

    c.... f....

@cat fan54 his little hammer-ons are a huge part of my own bass catalogue. A huge influence on me. Perfect combination of groove and melody.

    c.... f....

Not only has John been largely ignored as an excellent bass guitarist .... Several of his compositions/lyrics have been overlooked ....

... AND his charisima/personality is rarely mentioned

  54. s.... ....

Another great bass line by John Lodge. Probably the most underrated bass player ever!

    s.... ....

Loove his bass line on Dear Diary.

  55. o.... ....

This has, probably for 35 years, been one of my favourite Moodies songs. I love the chords and the whole tone of the song. I love playing it (Dm Dm7 G etc).

    o.... ....

@occasionallyHere Justin is often quoted as saying that the record company repeatedly asked him " why cant you just write another ' Nights' " . This is it , in my opinion. Should have been a huge hit.

    o.... ....

@richard tofts agreed... but like hayward has said ,so should have 'watching and waiting'' least i think so...

    o.... ....

I love that one too, but its not quite as instantly engaging as " what am I doing here" . I also love " I never thought I'd live to be a hundred " ( the second version on the album ) frustrates the heck out of me. That 30 seconds of guitar is just sublime.

  56. s.... r....

    their masterpiece ..love it

  57. L.... K....

Never listened to the post 7th albums. I should try them!

    L.... K....

Still a highly professional band with some very good songs, but that extra magic element had departed when Mike Pinder did. For me, it wasn't the same band.

  58. D.... K....

They are by a good stretch my favorite group. The Who comes in second.

  59. W.... B....

One of the most beautiful songs ever...no other band has ever come close to the style and mystical lyrics of this fab band. I have loved this band from the 60's through today and tomorrow.

  60. R.... R....

Among my top 5 bands I would say, and I know a LOT of music. The moody blues are indeed immortal in their music.

  61. a.... ....

I love the Moody Blues. They were never like anyone else.

  62. C.... ....

This is a truly beautiful song. The lyrics are so meaningful like the very best of the Moodies songs.
    Lovely!!
    Thanks for posting this!
    Tony.

  63. k.... ....

Whooo! I can look down and there won't be any comments about how *number* of people don't get the song.

    YES!

  64. W.... S....

not many people even know who the moody blues are..when they say who are they i smack em :) thats an insult. prelude and DoFP are the 2 best albums although its hard to pick an all time fave from them. i was born into the moodies and il die into the moodies

    W.... S....

I was a Moodies fan starting in 1969. It's true, some people don't even know about this group and their music and others only really know them by their top 40 hits. But it's songs like this one and "Never Comes the Day", "Simple Game", etc. that really reveal the heart of their music. I am proud to say that I made sure I educated and exposed my children to their music early on. My 30 something daughter has seen them in concert and both 30 something kids know their music when they hear it. The Moodies are gifts from above and completely original.

  65. R.... R....

    @1allanbmw perfectly said.

  66. 1.... ....

I remember when the album came out in 1977 with this song and a few other songs that had been penned and recorded 10 yrs earlier, how I thought, even at the tender age of 18 how amazing the production quality was, just as "Day's of Future Past" and everything else post 1967 Moody's was. I still sit in awe at their music, foresight and creative talents. Truly this particular song is one of those "lost" treasures, for only the most devoted fans.

  67. k.... ....

    this song is a masterpiece!!!!

  68. 2.... ....

I agree with you... I love to listen to almost any song of the moodies and lay back and let my mind drift with the music. Most of their best stuff was written when they were young.
Saw them on t.v. last night singing at the Royal Albert Hall. Don't know how old the recording was. If it's current, they are still singing great.
Thanks for posting this beautiful music.
By the way do you have any of the Justin's songs from Songwriter?
