Moody Blues, The - Late Lament Lyrics

Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
Another day's useless energy spent.
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white.
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion?

Moody Blues, The Late Lament Comments
  1. j.... ....

I just heard this on sirius. The radio said it was knights in white satin.

  2. A.... A....

    THIS IS POETRY!

  3. D.... H....

All of their music is fantastic!

  4. S.... K....

Am 65 + and can never ever forget this late lament!

  5. M.... B....

Love this video and no loud gong at the end was a pleasant surprise. Thanks Dan for another real goodie. :)

    M.... B....

Mr Blue Thanks for the compliments. Yes I used the version from album Prelude. I was getting patent infringement from YT using Days of Future Passed album, so to avoid this I used another version thinking they wouldn’t ban it from playing.

  6. C.... B....

All senseless words BUT its the gong that makes it true poetry.
Why would anyone edit the gong out of this?

    C.... B....

Senseless words? Are you that emotionally stunted?

    C.... B....

Steve Cravener - This is one of my all time favorites. It’s fantastic on its own. I love the way it’s woven musically with Knights In White Satin in the end. And of course the words are meticulously placed precisely with the orchestral arrangement. Just beautiful!
My personal opinion is that the gong punctuates the piece and should have been included rather than chopped off in this upload.
*Im sure there is a good explanation why it isn’t included such as embedded data in the down loaded file.

    C.... B....

@Chris Barnes OK, I falsely assumed you were bashing the song as so many do because they do not understand.

    I apologize.

  7. K.... P....

I am reciting this among other things at a talent show in May

    K.... P....

Don’t forget to breathe deep before reciting!!!

  8. J.... R....

    jodys land of nod
doug and ed gone seeing god
    scott laughs a new dog

  9. s.... ....

I so miss the ending gong - it's the perfect terminus for this sublime masterpiece.

    s.... ....

I chose the version from the Prelude LP instead of Days of Future Passed as I feared the record Gods would my video, their song, banned from being played for copyright infringement....

    s.... ....

    Too bad.

  10. M.... C....

I haved liked this part of Days of futured past. Since 1980 when I was a little 7 year old kid with wild curly hair.

    M.... C....

I remember back in the 70's ( in my early teens) listing to Nights in White Satin and hearing Late Lament and thought how cool it was to have poetry in a song....of course back when I didn't know it was the Moody Blues I was listing to...just knew the song....Thanks for the comments Matthew....

  11. M.... T....

the Beatles played in the shallows, The Moody Blues ruled the Ocean and Zeppelin move over the earth only the middle band played on 1 & 3 crashed and burned the blues are a calling not a playground # 2 hit the cord in their sojourn, but their music say's it better than I. Nights in White Satin never more, hey how did E. A. Poe = Parson's slip in pardon my tell tale heart. the three band's could be a modern paradox of the House of Usher. You Know.

Wow, I was shocked to learn just now that this came out in 1967. I was always under the impression it came out around 1977. They were way ahead of their time!

  18. 4.... ....

Written by Graeme Edge and recited by Mike Pinder.

No bigger tragedy then those who will not love and those who are the victims of those who should be loving them.

  23. P.... R....

Bed wetter people look back and lament, another sheet for the laundry needs to be sent.

  24. S.... G....

I turned 61 today Susan. I played 2 songs from the Moody Blues at my Mothers funeral! ⚘

    S.... G....

Totally agree Susan.  This is my favorite poem of All-Time.  I will likely recite it verbatim from memory on my death bed.

  26. N.... F....

My first day of high school in English classier had to write down a favorite poem. Many classmates were stumped but I wrote down Late Lament. Got an A ~

  29. M.... L....

One of my favourite songs by the Moody Blues. I've shared it on my blog post this week. - Margy

    M.... L....

thanks for sharing my video....the song really ties in the whole album....

    M.... L....

Thanks for allowing me to embed it. It fit perfectly with my blog post about the "gathering gloom" of stormy skies. - Margy

    M.... L....

    Nice....glad it worked for you.

    M.... L....

not really a song, have to listen to whole album

    M.... i....

Let's see you have a go then?

    M.... i....

wasn't quite sure how to respond to that comment...but you handled it perfectly....I think it sums up that album just right.....or... which is an illusion

  31. T.... M....

    Tops!!!

  32. T.... ....

There is nothing left to say now that I have read over all the other comments. Your last space visual seems to imprint everything onto me. Good job Dan!

    T.... ....

+TreasureLeaf I remember when making this one and the two pics I used when Graeme says Which is Right and which is an illusion, to have two pics that had illusions in them and let the audience decide the question....I still can't believe the amount of hits this one has...thanks again for the comments...you are making me want to do my next video...which has been in the works some what....

    Saludos

    "Late Lament"

    Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
    Another day's useless energy spent.
    Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,

Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white.
But we decide which is right.
    And which is an illusion?

WHERE'S THE GONG !??!  THAT IS JUST AS  IMPORTANT AS THE OTHER INSTRUMENTS !!!  YOU'RE THE SECOND ONE I'VE CHECKED AND IT'S NOT THERE, EITHER !!! I HATE WHEN PEOPLE DO THAT !!!  IT DOESN'T "FIT" IN THE NEXT TRACK...Oh, I see you  explained to Greg why... I still hate it not being there, although it's not your fault.

    b.... m....

You are right!  Now I need to fond another video to post on Facebook.  Dang it!!!

    b.... m....

It was edited out by mastering engineers.

    b.... m....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ_XDSeq2aE This version has the gong

  37. B.... B....

    1.16.14. No more late lament.

  38. 1.... ....

    thanks!!!

  39. 1.... ....

Greg this version of Late Lament came from the "Prelude" CD and not "Days of Future Passed" which doesn't have the gong like DOFP...

  40. G.... L....

"We decide which is right and which is an illusion"(where's the gong?)

    G.... L....

The gong is not here as it was the ending to the "Days Of Future Passed" album and not "Late Lament" as a separate entity

  41. 1.... ....

Thanks GA for the nice compliments...glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks Jill, I had a few pics saved for this video about 6 months ago and decided to do this video on Thursday night and posted it on Saturday
