Moody Blues, The - King And Queen Lyrics

It's like awaking from a dream
All I remember is a lullaby
I couldn't tell you where I've been
A thousand images just flutter by

Takin' my time
In a white limousine
If I was the King
She'd be my Queen

And my thoughts are growing louder
And my mind has lost its way
And the flames are getting higher ev'ryday

My mind is back behind my eyes
And there before me sits a butterfly
And as I watch, she gently cries (And as I watch, she gently cries)
Can there be anyone who'll pity her? (Who'll pity her?)

How many faces
Have all of you been?
If I was the King
She'd be my Queen

And my thoughts are getting louder
And my mind has lost its way
And the flames are getting higher ev'ryday

My mind is back behind my eyes
And there before me sits a butterfly
And as I watch, she gently cries (And as I watch, she gently cries)
Can there be anyone who'll pity her? (Who'll pity her?)

How many faces
Have all of you been?
If I was the King
She'd be my Queen

And my thoughts are getting louder
And my mind has lost its way
And the flames are getting higher ev'ry day
And the flames are getting higher ev'ry day
And the flames are getting higher ev'ry day

Moody Blues, The King And Queen Comments
  1. S.... N....

I was born in January of 1970 and grew up on the Moodies. Nothing can compare

    S.... N....

I was born in January of 1980 and discovered the Moodies 20 years later. Nothing can compare.

    S.... N....

I was born 1964 and my first touch to Moody Blues happened early 70's. I heard then Days of future passed, on the threshold of a dream and seventh sojourn. Since then Moody Blues is been a part of my music.

    S.... N....

    Same here.☺️

  2. v.... ....

This should have been played more! Love this song..

  3. N.... R....

    Beautiful!

  4. P.... B....

How good were these guys that they could discard a composition/performance/recording of this magnitude... All three Hayward songs on Caught Live + 5 were great. What Am I Doing Here is fantastic also. K&Q is definitely the result of an LSD trip... or a very fertile imagination. Amazing piece of work and criminal that it lay in the vaults for nine years.

    P.... B....

    same with some other songs.
"Island" from "Seventh Sojourn" sounds like it should have been a James Bond theme song.

  5. J.... C....

Few artists can touch me as deeply as these men. Some disturbed boy at 'Vulture' disrespected them and said they shouldn't be in the RRHF . They should have been among the first there. Rare is it that tears come to my eyes from a song . When they do rise it's usually from the Moody Blues reaching my soul.

    J.... C....

Yes I agree with you very much. They are a group to touch the very depths of your being. And they’re still alive and playing for the world to see and hear. Anyone that says they don’t belong in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame needs to go get their ears checked.

    J.... C....

    That’s a lovely sentiment Joseph

  6. C.... F....

I love this so much. Born on the Moody Blues. I love them!

  7. M.... L....

    BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL

  8. c.... ....

I was at that amazing Albert Hall concert so I had to buy the LP then but as far as I remember it was not an official Decca release.

    c.... ....

Caught Live + 5 may have been Decca's 1977 response to a bootleg in that case?

  9. S.... A....

    "THE QUEEN &THE KING"........

  10. R.... P....

Just wanna get totally stoned to this. Forget the shit going on in the world today, just disappear with this tune resounding in your head !! Beautiful, serene, love the Moodies forever!!!

  11. I.... S....

    What an amazing tune

  12. o.... p....

    Those long, long legs <3

    o.... p....

    haha indeed

  13. D.... R....

Blown away the first time I heard this in 1977....still remain so in 2018.

  14. D.... P....

21st century what are we doing here?Listen good music!

  15. B.... ....

The way I understand it, even though this was a "bonus" cut on The Moody Blues "Caught Live + 5" album of 1977, which featured live concert footage from their very late 60s performance at the "Royal Albert Hall" along with this said song & 4 others, this particular cut, "KING AND QUEEN" was one of the many numbers that were shaved off and had to be cut from the "DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED" sessions, simply due to phonographic record time constraints and overall length limitations. Such a shame, as this beautifully composed piece would have been an excellent part of that masterpiece concept album.

But, ya know, in the big picture, I am kind of glad that fate had it's way in that scenario.

Today, in the "CD" age, recording artists can fit up to 80 minutes of music, that after a while, just becomes "schlock" that should've been shaved off in the first place. Just because you "can", doesn't always mean you "should". And in our todays...RIGHT NOW...in the limitless MP3, download and age of continuous streaming, the never ending flow of material, just becomes mindless and numbing. At least, that's the way this old fart sees it.

When I first received a copy of the "Caught Live + 5" record in '77, there was this priceless little gem, hauntingly known as, "KING AND QUEEN" and when I picked up the CD in 2007, there it 'twas again, in this new "digital" age we now live, breathe & thrive in. I was so moved by it, I featured it on in Volume #2 of my "THE MOODS OF SUNDAY NIGHT" weekend radio broadcasts that were in production at that time, featured on The Salem Radio Network, back in 2008.

Hayward's haunting lead vocal, Lodge's underwater, subsonic sounding style of bass emphasis, Thomas' extremely delicate touch on percussion, Edge's quartz watch-like timing on the drums and Pinder's deep, dark, murky, fog-filled-morning interpretations on the revered Mellotron, gave "KING AND QUEEN", I feel, a full undercurrent & underestimated unique style of substance and life, than any other recording of "today", can ever birth or be realized.

BolsaChicaRadio - I still have my "Caught Live + 5" vinyl, and then 20 yrs later bought it on cd (ripped for this video!). "King and Queen" is one track that has always stood out for me... and for the reasons you mention. Thanks for commenting!

    B.... ....

You're welcome good buddy. I have a YouTube page that I feature my past "THE MOODS OF SUNDAY NIGHT" radio broadcasts, but only have two, out of the twenty volumes I produced, uploaded at this time, unfortunately, the one that I featured "KING AND QUEEN", is not one of them...YET! NOTE TO SELF: Upload it soon!!!

The Moodys have been an incredibly established pinnacle of artistry for those who adore concept recordings of long ago and I believe will remain in that category until music's, end of time.

    BCRadio

    B.... ....

BC Radio - Thanks, I will have to check it out!

  16. T.... W....

No other band will ever be like the Moody Blues!

    T.... W....

    INDEED....😇😇😇✨🌟✨💕💕💕

    T.... W....

    Sharon Allison is true...

  17. M.... J....

How many faces have we've been ?

    M.... J....

    OMG - what a question to ask...🤔

  18. F.... ....

This track was on an album from the 1970s titled, "Moody Blues Caught Live, + Five". It was a track that didn't make it on to one of their previous albums from the late '60s or early '70s. LPs back then were time limited to around 40 minutes both sides. It must have been tough cutting "King and Queen" from the album. Great Moodys song!

  19. c.... r....

Somehow I missed this song along the many years. Music has always been so important to me and the moody blues music/lyrics always centers my soul:)

    c.... r....

the epitome of meaningful psychedelic rock - when some of us were not afraid to experience the ups and downs and fears and insights of "reality experienced from a totally different point of view". Most of us came back and were able to get both feet back on the ground, only after some, or many trials and tribulations, but a few never came all the way back down. It was an age of introspection and adventure and "questions". The Moodys (especially Justin and Mike) helped guide us in ways that we never fully understood, but their music reflects experiences that few could imagine today. Thanks for helping to take so many of us out of the "cookie cutter"/easy "reality box" and help us to look outside of the mundane world, and the simple, mindless ways of looking at life...

  20. J.... T....

Love being able to catch up on these songs I've missed for so long...I have the melodies in my mind for so long and trying to remember where and when they've come from, lost albums and archives and newly discovered oldies!

  21. M.... B....

Just magical music at its best from the past!

    M.... B....

I agree. I love the Moody Blues and their songs are timeless, just as good today as they were fifty years ago.

    M.... B....

Rosemary Scott  Yes they are so underrated and need to be knighted for giving us this wonderful music that will live on forever.

  22. B.... ....

I hope, at the moment of my death, I hear the voice of Justin, welcoming me home.

  23. r.... b....

    Teaching me gently since '69.

  24. C.... E....

If I was your Queen you would most certainly be my King! lol Love your music, Moodies!! xx

  25. M.... G....

Have they ever made a bad song I think not just pure class

  26. g.... h....

What a great band of talented men..... peace now.

  27. M.... J....

This tune was a late discovery for me [~1996? .... LORDY !!!] .... My 1st MOODY album (like many folks) was DAYS OF FUTURE PAST .... Took me almost 30 years to back-peddal to find this tune & GO NOW

  28. D.... ....

dreamy. Song takes you for a soft, velvety ride. Oh....moody blues

  29. C.... ....

This is one of my favorites -beautiful melody. Thank you 60s70sVintageRock for sharing ! I am so glad I found it...enjoyed the photos too !

    C.... ....

@Cynt - You are very welcome, it's one of my very favorites, too! Please help the Moodies to get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 by voting here every day! https://www.rockhall.com/fan-vote/2018-fan-vote

    C.... ....

@60s70sVintageRock- right there with you whole heartedly ! Yesterday, I spent some time on the R&R Hall of Fame site looking over the inductees inducted before the Moodies even get nominated. Mind boggeling ! Hope to see them in Orlando in 2018.

  30. D.... P....

Love the Moody Blues.  Justin's voice is unique.  Thank you.

  31. B.... B....

    simply the best +

  35. M.... O....

a jewel in this, the yoonyverse. but splendid !!! thank you, Moody Blues. you saved me.

  36. d.... j....

I've just been reviewing early Moody music ... AND public comments about such ...

Some folks have not been kind to the falsetto voices ... Sin embargo, (esp. in mid-50s to early 80s music) the falsetto voices actually MADE the tunes [eg: Frankie Valli, et. al]

Keep on loving the tunes and pass them on to our progeny who may or may not appreciate them (Today)

  37. P.... S....

Lodge's high vocals are a treasure xxxx

    P.... S....

Pia Struck it took years until I found out John Lodge had the falsetto vocals.
Wish he had performed send me no wine of the recent tour.
On the extended remastered album, the Moodies perform it live on a BBC program.

    P.... S....

His vocal range is amazing considering he has that low sexy speaking voice.

  38. j.... c....

I can listen to this song and "What am I doing here?" over and over. Just like everything from the first 7 albums. Just amazing.

  39. T.... B....

    Exquisite.

  40. G.... C....

One of my favourite Moodies songs - thanks for posting, made my day!

  41. I.... D....

    Beautiful song!

Been my favorite since I was 4 in 69, the single most beautiful stunning band to ever grace this amazing world. Hauntingly Beautiful!!!

  44. R.... D....

    G.... 9....

  51. R.... F....

Wonderful!  Just wonderful!  Thank you for posting!!

    R.... F....

@Ronald Flores You're welcome... thanks for visiting. :)

  52. D.... ....

Beautiful, this has always been one of my favorites from the Moodies.  It's meaning changes with the years of life,,,,

  53. f.... ....

    Rare Precious Beautiful INDEED!

  54. C.... W....

I can understand why the band never intended to officially release this track. But I'm glad the record company released it anyway!

    C.... W....

A simply beautiful song... imo, it is one of their best.  No less deserving of an official release than any other track on the 1968 'In Search of the Lost Chord' lp.  Still glad it appeared, albeit a decade later... and then again on two subsequent releases.

    C.... W....

I wanted to give my son advice and i told him to follow his dreams because that is why we are here. thanks MB's on this song

    C.... W....

@Cathy Wood I always think Justin sounds really out of it on this one :-)

    C.... W....

Island was recorded Feb. 14, 1973, about 3 months after Seventh Sojourn was released. I have a copy of a "Monitor Mix" that has the recording date on it.

    C.... W....

I can understand why this wasn't supposed to be released. Listen to the acoustic guitar - very messy playing, especially at the beginning. Not the best of Justin's performance work!

  55. m.... b....

wow ! never heard this before

  56. c.... r....

yes  the Moody Blues were  great ,but  Michael Pinder  was the band  early! and wow

    c.... r....

just my opinion 45 years later. Mike was connected with the heavens and his melodies were not from this planet and he was getting an urgent message  and Justin had the voice and emotion to show us this is a concerted message from the heavens. The visual stuff i believe comes from Hippie Chick where does she get this stuff?

    c.... r....

from the old hippie days -ask  Timothy Leary-lol-maybe a 'flashback' so to speak-either way it's all good!-they were pretty democratic on collaborations -I liked their solo music as well-Heyward +Lodge blue jays  and check out Natural Avenue from John Lodge-and Justin's  solo as well--Some got the message-but  they' - we all got high- in a far away time friend

  57. R.... M....

My favorite from the Caught live +5 live albums. A song to describe one's feelings toward a beloved one in a certain time and place

  58. t.... ....

This was not recorded until after "DOFP" - sometime before or during the "ISOTLC" sessions..

  59. B.... W....

A somewhat hidden gem. I love this song and it is a shame if it was never played live.

  60. a.... ....

will watch them tonight at agua caliente casino, rancho mirage, calif. :-)

  61. A.... ....

it's on the 'prelude' album...more gems to discover.

  62. w.... ....

they just had so much stuff coming from so many outlets of talent, the producers had to cut so much away, and i think u can tell from albums like To my C.C.C.C.
im kinda young to toot my whistle to much about them, but 1 thing is for sure. when i found my self waking up to a new world, guess what band i accidentally stumbled on.
im still trying to figure out what happen to w/e that was, and why it doesnt seem as prominent :(

  63. P.... ....

I dont know wy Justin wont play this song live...he's NEVER played it live :(((

  64. K.... M....

This is what they call a "B" side or preludes, but one of my favourite Moody Blues songs

  65. k.... ....

This is my favorite Moody Blues song of all time. I got the Caught Live Plus Five record way back when, and I must have listened to this song, and What Am I Doing Here, about a million times since then. Can't ever get enough!!!!!!

  66. W.... ....

one of the best on the TOCCC album too... :-)

  67. W.... ....

Was it from that recording session?! Wow. You're right - would have been one of the best tracks on the album.

  68. r.... b....

    Rare, precious and beautiful.

  69. J.... N....

One of a handful of MB songs from pre Days of future passed MB. Listen to "What am I doing here", pity there wasn't enough songs to make an LP.

  70. 6.... ....

If not, there's always Amazon. The merchant 'importcds' has it new, for less than others. I've bought from them a few times and never a problem ;)

  71. s.... ....

Never heard this before. I don't know how he writes all these incredible songs. This is beautiful. Heading for the Record Exchange to see if they have a copy of the cd.

  72. t.... ....

....there is no explanation , you just love it!!

  73. M.... ....

I believe that there just wasn't enough room on the LP. There was "an embarrassment of riches" in the songwriting department for the Moodies.

  74. b.... h....

    i love this song...it's so soft and fluttery...like a daydream...on a summer afternoons nap....

  75. J.... B....

So sorry to hear about your mom. New Horizons now reminds me of my dear friend who passed last year. Indeed the Moody's songs stir up so many emotions in us. It can be very bitter-sweet.

  76. J.... B....

I just bought the ISOTLC remastered CD. In the liner notes it says that in 1968 bands were very limited on how much material they could put on an album. Since there was so much other good material to put on the album, this one got cut out. It just goes to show that these guys were so talented that they had TOO many great songs to be contained in the standard format of the day.

  77. b.... h....

this has always been one of my favorite songs...now it reminds me when my mother passed in september and there were butterflies everywhere i went...and many tears...and even the rest of the song is how I felt...

  78. L.... ....

I totally agree!!! I would love to see them perform those songs live!!!!

  79. e.... v....

They could do this in concert in a suite with What Am I Doing Here and You Can't Go Home Again. Yes?

  80. 6.... ....

@GlenAnne99 - Yes, I'll never understand why it wasn't released sooner! It's one of my Moody favorites. Thanks for the comment :)

  81. G.... ....

Thanks for putting this up :) I've always thought it was a wonderful song...it's a shame it never really got the notice it deserved.
    Annie

  82. W.... G....

for 45 years they have been making and playing great music, I can't help to think of what the music world would have been like without their inspiration.
God bless you guys and keep on goin strong

  83. L.... ....

@threshold60 I totally agree, everytime I hear this song it sends chills down my spine...it is hauntingly beautiful!!!!!! :)

  84. t.... ....

This track still makes the hairs on my neck stand up. What a musical genius Mr. Hayward is. There must be lots of hidden gems like this that never got released.

  85. m.... b....

wow first time i hear it

  86. s.... ....

    Brilliant !

  87. b.... h....

I love this song...when my mum was dying in a hospital this year a butterfly landed by me outside on the terrace...at he eulogy I mentioned the butterfly...that's what this song reminds me of my life in transition...and mum's life...

  88. J.... ....

    musical genius=Moody Blues!!!

  89. W.... S....

how is it even possible to make such an amazing song?

  90. p.... ....

@elinorvonzahm I believe Solvinden is referring to In Search of the Lost Cord (ISOTLC). And I agree; these '+5' songs are amazing.

  91. e.... v....

I know what TOCCC is but what is ITSOTLC?

This song is as haunting as 'what am i doing here'

    e.... v....

In Search of The Lost Chord..someone put too many letters

  92. w.... ....

What I don't understand is how all these extra tracks (King and Queen, The Dreamer, What Am I doing Here) don't end up on the next album... Island is another fantastic out-take from the aborted post-Seventh Sojourn album.

  93. b.... h....

i can go to sleep now...thanx justin...

  94. B.... ....

I want to "like" this about 50 times, thanks for posting! LOVE it!

  95. j.... ....

    The Moody Blues' best album.

  96. t.... ....

Deserves much more recognition. Should have been included on one of the albums.

  97. a.... ....

My mind is back behind my eyes. With lyrics like this, it's not wonder they had to come out with "I'm Just a SInger". Everybody has their own idea about what the hell they were singing about. but they still get everybody's minds moving. Prophets? Poets? Philosophers? Cosmic? Yup. Cheers to all their other fans.

  98. c.... n....

    LOVE forever

  99. h.... ....

    .......Perfect......Such Magical Music......
