Moody Blues, The - Go Now Lyrics

We've already said ‘Goodbye’.
Since you've got to go
Oh you had better go now.
Go now. Go now. Go now
Before you see me cry.
I don't want you to tell me
Just what you intend to do now.
'Cause how many times do I have to tell you
Darling, darling,
I'm still in love
With you now?

We've already said ‘So long’
I don't want to see you go.
Oh you had better go now.

Go now. Go now. Go now
Don't you even try telling me
That you don't want me to end this way
'Cause, darling, darling,
Can't you see I want you to stay?

We've already said ‘Goodbye’.
Since you've got to go
Oh you had better go now.

Go now. Go now. Go now
Before you see me cry.
I don't want you to tell me
Just what you intend to do now.
'Cause how many times do I have to tell you
Darling, darling,
I'm still in love,
Still in love,
With you now?

I don't want to see you go
But, darling,
You'd better go now.

Moody Blues, The Go Now Comments
  1. M.... L....

The 60s'-one great song after another! Thank God I was around to enjoy  and live it.

  2. C.... C....

My brother Mick used to go to the band's house in Roedeane Crescent in Roehampton near Richmond Park. He was a bit of a clown in school, a bit naughty - but not a bad kid - but often sent to the corner by the teacher - where he would say "go unzip a banana!" and make the kids in class laugh even when he was being punished. For some reason the Moody Blues took him to their heart and sent him on errands for cigs and sweets, or whatever when they were partied out and fans waited at their gate to get a glimpse or an autograph. We had an old piano at home, given to my sister by Joe the caretaker - who took his own life (RIP Joe). When i was about five or six, my brothers used to play the piano chords of "Go Now" and I got to share Joe's piano, just playing one bit of that iconic song "Go Now" - hitting the keys when/where my brothers Mick and Frank told me. I didn't realise the significance then - of Mick going and hanging with the band - probably being a clown, but bringing home those chords that they probably taught him. RIP Mick, my favourite brother.

First I heard this song in the album “Wings over America”, Soon my favorite Denny’s song it had been, but later, heard it on the Moody Blues version, I felt in love with the sounds of its piano.

  5. L.... B....

They don’t make em like they used to

  6. W.... B....

    95 people need a shrink

  7. B.... K....

My wife said to me, tonight, while she was watching T.V., "The Moody Blues did the song, "Go Now." I said, "Bullshit." She said, they just said it on 'Decades', on T.V." I said, "Bullshit, it was a mistake, or something." She said, "Look it up."
I've been listening to, 'Go Now!', for 55 years, and didn't know it was one of my lifetime favorite bands. Now, I do.

  8. L.... F....

Lol, how bad am I? One of my favorite bands and I never new they wrote this song! I thought their first hit was "Nights in White Satin". Talk about a 360 in music direction!

    L.... F....

Yeah, if you live in the UK and were to ask any of the population what the Moody Blues only number 1 was, I reckon that 95 percent would say Nights in White Satin..........but this was their only No 1 in the UK.

  9. R.... G....

    Their first and BEST

  10. J.... P....

I was in 10th grade when this came out.
I am now 72 and a grandmother..still love this song.

  11. n.... ....

Great song, but wonderfully appropriated by Spitting Image circa 1990

  12. G.... W....

Old blues number always seems of poor quality to me, but a great number

  13. K.... B....

    Piano is awesome

  14. r.... ....

True Story: My wife was killed in 92 after we were hit by a drunk driver. We married at 16 and had been married for 20 years at the time of her death. I heard this song one day on some show as it was ending. I got on YouTube and listened to it. The song took on a different meaning. I had heard the song many times before and never paid any attention to the lyrics. Now the words seem like it's about someone who's crossing and you don't want to see them go.

  32. K.... c....

    Spitting Image brought me here

  33. G.... U....

It's a great tune, but I really prefer the Moodies mark II.

  34. t.... ....

I loved this song from the first time I heard it in 1964 when I was 12 years old. Over the years it has retained its urgency, pain and power. Have often wondered what this would have sounded like if the original recording engineer had had a modicum of understanding as to how to put music on tape in such a way that the end product didn't have to fight through a wall of distortion to be heard. What a moron.

  35. J.... L....

I have this album on 1960's vinyl. Bought it in the 70's though.

  36. M.... S....

I know the Moody Blues did a lot of great work with their fusion and progressive rock but this song with more than a little of Birmingham meets Detroit is, IMHO, their best. It's emotional, more than a little gritty, and very painful. In other words, it's what blues grew into... soul.

  37. J.... D....

One of my all time favourites..... I LOVE THIS SONG

  38. T.... ....

"Go Now" was originally written by a guy named Larry Banks, who wrote it for his wife Bessie to record. She did it- well- in early '64. The great Leiber and Stoller produced it and released it on their own label, but it got totally eclipsed by this, the definitive rendition by far. The Moodies (pre-Hayward) were a modest "Brummie" (from Birmingham, also home of future luminaries Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood) blues band when they started out. This was only their second 45, but it was huge at home and a major hit here as well. Deservedly so, because nobody could sound convincingly "hurt" like Denny Laine did here. I just love the way he sings it and the off-beat "jazz-waltz" piano background. (Not many vintage rock hits were in 3/4 time.) The later Moodies were great in their own right, as arguably the best Brit "prog-rock" band ever, but Hayward- a fantastic singer/guitar player even today- wasn't into songs like this (he never does it live). No, this song belongs to the Moodies and Denny Laine till the end of time. It's both vintage British Invasion and blue-eyed soul all in one. Fun fact: After his long stint with McCartney's Wings, Denny moved to the U.S. and still performs today, mostly in small venues. Incredibly, he sounds exactly the same and still sings this song to absolute perfection every time. He can do it both acoustic and on piano- he knows the unique rhythm backwards and forwards. Great singer, great musician, great guy. I'd love to see Denny live! BTW- Of course, "Denny Laine" rhymes with "Penny Lane": "Denny Laine is in my ears and in my eyes...":-)

    T.... ....

Do you go out trainspotting on weekends wearing an anorak?

    T.... ....

@david Felix You must be a "Brummie"- or at least a Brit. Never saw the movie but I believe it was set in Birmingham. Denny (ne Brian Hines) was actually born on a ship near the Channel Islands- British waters.
Birmingham was also the home of "Lunch Box" (circa '56), the UK's first daytime variety show. Its host, Noele Gordon, became a legendary soap opera star on the long-running show "Crossroads" (circa '64-84?). She played the manager of a motel where hanky-panky happened all the time.
No, I've never set foot on English soil, but I learned all that right here on YouTube!

  39. M.... A....

This song played in my first date in my 64 merc. Comet. Steamed up the Windows at Devou Park, yeah !!!

  49. G.... G....

    M0:00DY BLUES!! *URYAAAAA*

  50. R.... M....

1964: The Moody Blues were Denny Laine (guitar), Clint Warwick (bass), Mike Pinder (piano), Ray Thomas (percussion, reeds) and Graeme Edge (drums). This lineup's only #1 for British Decca, a hit in the US for Bessie Banks in 1963; other singles, mostly covers of R&B songs, didn't do well and they were almost off the label by 1966. Laine quit and Warwick followed. They recruited a friend of Thomas', bassist John Lodge and a 19-year-old guitarist/singer, Justin Hayward. Assigned producer Tony Clarke, Decca ordered a rock version of Dvorak to demonstrate stereo in the UK; instead they cranked out "Days of Future Passed". Laine went on to Paul McCartney and Wings, where he did this one as a featured solo.

  51. b.... ....

The best song of the British invasion in my opinion,

  64. N.... L....

    I’m 29 and I’m here. Such a class song

  65. A.... W....

That throbbing piano line has never been topped in all of rock music.

    A.... W....

That classic piano backdrop was played by Mike Pinder, original Moodie and brilliant keyboard player who also brought the Mellotron (an early synthesizer) to rock. He played on all their hits from '65-'78. Today, Justin Hayward never plays "Go Now" live, because Denny owns it 'til the end of time. Denny's still got it- and he's a great piano player, too, as well as guitar! He does this song plugged-in, acoustic and on piano, too- he can play that exact accompaniment just like Mike did on the original! Heard him do it all three ways on YouTube and still does it to perfection.
