Monkees, The - Love Is Only Sleeping Lyrics
She looked at me
And the emptiness in her eyes was cruel to see
Then she turned away and said,
"Once I loved, but love is dead"
And I whispered, "Sometimes love is only sleeping"
She said, "I cannot cry
And I cannot give or feel or even try"
And her voice was hard and cold
Then her sweet young face looked old
And I whispered, "Sometimes love is only sleeping"
Through the endless days and nights
Could not help but wrap herself in sorrow (sorrow)
Through the endless days and nights
She waited for a shiny new tomorrow
She looked at me
And her smiling tears were warm and sweet and free
And the moonlight kissed her eyes
As it mingled with our sighs
And she whispered, "Sometimes love is only sleeping"
And she whispered, "Sometimes love is only sleeping"
Only sleeping...

those cuffs are the BEST - they need to be a thing again, like -- right now!
Micky is wearing a tablecloth with a hole cut it in for his head. No joke.
How can anyone downvote this video??? What a great song!
ok so i'm a child of the 80s who loved the monkees and still do, i totally forgot about this song and how good and cute they were, very underrated
I just realised that the Monkee songs I luv the most are sung by Mike. Also luv Davy on drums .
Micky's natural ongoing goofiness... you just can't fake stuff like that.
The riff and bassline is amaaaaaazing ..
2019 Rules forever 👍.
So good.
The guys all look soooo groovy (haha) all the time!!! Mickey's poncho material ... I love!! Curtain material!!! Cool
Tube amplifiers sound so different than the transistor technology.
This song made me fall in love with Mike, although it would be a few years before I realized it. I was a Davy fan before that.
At a meet and greet I went to with Micky I got to ask him if his poncho was really made from a tablecloth and he laughed and said yes it actually was, haha I love Micky! And I love this song!
Some `sources` have stated that Mickey's `Moog` was used on this track- but it `ain't so.
Can we talk about how white pants are made for Peter? lol
One of my favorite songs! Thanks!
Superb!
I am in love with Mike..
Groovy.
One of my favorite Mks songs.!!!
Music makes life so bearable and time just stops for a while.
Mike sure could sing.
Omg davy in the background tho
Well they certainly had good taste when choosing their songs. It doesnt get much better than Barry Mann & Cythia Weil in this case!
Good song performed well by Mike Nesmith. Mike did good work.
A 1960s Masterpiece.!!!
A lot of these 1960s and 1970s recordings will be around 100 years from now (and more).
One of my favorite Monkees songs.
I always thought that was a poncho or Dashiki that Micky was wearing, according to Micky, it was a tablecloth that he cut a hole in. 😆
I think I had a striped shirt similar to the one Micky had when I was a kid.
One of their lesser known songs.
One of my favorite Monkee songs, they sound like The Beatles. Considered one of the 1st music videos. I love the hippie clothes, compare this to "Last Train to Clarksville ", you will see how they changed, (in a year )
did mike write this one? its gorgeous.
No, I think it's Mann/Weil.
Regina Scruggs i had 2 monkee albums when i was a kid. i think this was on one of them.
Loved Micky's mad scientist schtick in this videol
2019 and their music are getting better and better
R.I.P. Peter Tork and Davy Jones! You're both together up in the amazing place.
That's a beautiful beast of a bass that Peter is playing!
And then there were only 2, Yesterday we lost Peter Tork, R.I.P.
Foi a 4 música do álbum help 1965 Paulo (vocal) Tiago (guitarra e líder vocal) Mario (baixo e vocal) Píndaro (teclado) stabile (guitarra) Júlia (bateria) João Ramos (violão) Mendonça (percussão) 1 música do álbum os futebolistas 2005 Paulo (bateria e vocal) stabile (guitarra e líder vocal) Mario (baixo e vocal) rico Salamar (violão) Tata (vocal)
peter's dancing in this video is so cute.
awesome
that guitar sounds sooo 60s I love it ,puts me back in time, mike had sum great stuff
love there music today music not fit to listen to i listen to it every day
Love the 5 Rainbow Room songs!!!
Damn! A marvelous pop song in which the verse is in 7/4 time. And this wasn't the only song back then that had time signatures other than 4/4. Present day pop? 'beats' and pitch correction. Mortifying.
Literally Vanessa Hudgens has a song in 5/4: https://youtu.be/2lp4gOcrhIY. Odd time signatures are still around.
Dolenz is so worthless.
Aren't they great?!!! Don't know if I'm happy that these guys are so talented that there'll never be another group of guys who are so cute, funny , cool and talented just like them; because I MISS THEM!!! Thank G-d for videotape!!!! They each had such unique/ original talent!! Mike...you werent kidding when you said that you guys brought the force of your characters to the show !! ( You know...when you told Don Kirshner off! lol)
this is the most progressive song the monkees ever did. GREAT SONG, isnt it mostly in 7/8
7/4, and it’s the riff that makes up the verse sections.
used to watch the show as a kid and still think they're cool! moe
Before their 80s revival, this is one of the few things I remembered about the Monkees . This song/vid was perfect for their psychedelic phase.
nice job.
I love Mike’s voice. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s so rich. On my list of favorite singers.
I think my soul lept 3 dimensions listening to this
HAVE BEEN A FAN OF THE BAND AND ESPECIALLY THE NESMITH WRITTEN OR PRODUCED SONGS. THAT GUILD THUNDERBIRD BASS TORK HAS IS WORTH A FORTUNE. THEY MADE VERY FEW UNDER GIBSON'S SUBSIDIARY NAME GUILD.
The Monkees > The Beatles
Freehardy dude Peter Tork is killing it on the bass and look at Davy Jones controlling the rhythm with those drum tracks! Ringo and Paul could learn from this video.
Great track. Their best album for me PAC&J
I was 5 when I started watching them I was amazed at the 66 GTO. But waited until they started singing with content. It's ok to visit your past you just can't live there.
Peter is rocking that bass!!
My favorite. Thank you
Monkees; nice marketing invention
all child punks bow down to thy high priests !
MIKE NESMITH , GREAT SONGWRITER, THIS IS MY FAVORITE... I WAS 14 WHEN I HEARD THIS. THANKS-
He didn't write this one, though. It's a Mann-Weill song. Nesmith is still a great songwriter!
1:57 bro i love the way he says that line
LOVE this song! Mike is fantastic and looks so handsome <3
The word's is to good to Come down man!!
I Think that wil make me sleeping!!
How cool is Mike Nesmith , very talented man , love them all and should have more respect, Mike Nez is the man imho !
Mock is actually wearing a tablecloth that he saw in a store, liked, and cut a hole in it so he could wear it as a poncho. He makes such goofy faces here!
Great song, love Mike's playing & singing, but very honestly, I was transfixed watching Peter move his hips & his booty! He was, and still is, my favorite Monkee (with Mike a close second), and still sets my heart aflutter! lol
wonderful ax lick
Chris Hemmer Drop d guitar tuning.
I like the opening guitar rift
Mike's voice is EVERYTHING.
I love Mike's Lead guitar work on this song!
i swear the monkees were 1000 times better than any band back then (and any band since). i love mikes guitar playing. he is the best guitar player i have ever heard. mikes songs were the best songs the monkees did, in my opinion.
I love me some Mike Nesmith. He and Mickey are best on lead vocals, imo. Did Peter ever sing lead?
He shared lead vocals with Micky on "Words", and with Davy on "Shades of Gray", and he also sang lead on his own on a couple of songs in "Head".
My mom saw Brian Jones in a London coffeeshop with cuffs like those!
Great song. Still one of my favorites
just brilliant what a hook
another stellar performance by nesmith
great MIKE
Micky better get that tablecloth back to Mom.
Why is Davy on the drums
as it happens, he could play the drums before the Monkees started...
Freya close
because micky was with that machine.
Freya close Unlike Micky, he actually could play.
enna1913
...ok......
Davy was actually a better drummer than IMickey and he learned to play guitar and bass also. These guys were singers and musicians, and got better at performing live. They are in my opinion much better than the so called grammy wimning artists and Rock and Roll hall of inductees of today.
@HopelessStrlstfan cool! I've never seen any of Christian's stuff
@Shondell Miller YIKES! You mean I screwed up Chris's name also!!!!! "Christian" not "Christopher." Got it!!!!! Not a good night for me and names!!!!
@HopelessStrlstfan 🤣
@Shondell Miller Mickey (having started as an actor and only _becoming_ a musician as a result of being cast) learned to play the drums specifically _by_ mimicking what was on the recordings. Watch any episode, and you'll see that Mickey is spot on. Now, it may very well be that (as others have pointed out) Davy was a good enough drummer to cover drums in the live shows whenever Mickey was out front. However, if he were, "...actually BETTER than the studio musicians, goin' off an doin' his own thing," I would expect _his thing_ to still operate within the confines of the drum set. In that video (as with this one) his movements are often nowhere near the playback...moving his hands in rhythms and _tempos_ that flatly _don't_ match the song. Moreover, in this video, he plays the high hat...which doesn't move when he hits it...during a part of the song where there is _no_ high hat present, _and_ (as mentioned before with regard to "Words") occasionally swinging at (and stopping on) nothing but thin air.
Now, I could be open to the idea that he was _actually_ playing, "...his own thing," during the video recording session, and we simply don't hear that _because_ of the overlaid playback in the finished product. Unfortunately, Davy...having _also_ been an actor since childhood...would understand the importance of LOOKING correct in performance. Whether you buy what I'm selling or not, the evidence upon which my conclusion is based is objectively observable and clearly demonstrable. It is thus perfectly rational to conclude that MAYBE he's not actually a better drummer than Mickey...at least not by the margin others in the thread seem to believe.
Again, saying this as a man who has loved The Monkees since junior high school AND who learned to play primarily by setting up _my own_ drums in front of the TV and playing along with MTV, VH1, and...you guessed it...the musical numbers within the TV episodes of The Monkees. Of course, as a musician and fan, I also realize that nothing we're discussing actually matters at this point. Regardless of who may have been better at what, _their_ legacy is secure...as demonstrated by the fact that we're all still coming back for more of the _band's_ music all these years later.
During one of their tours in the 1980s, Peter played an instrumental on guitar when Davy said “”hey Peter, you forgot, the Monkees don’t play their own instruments.”
Peter replied “That’s ok, this is Mickey’s guitar I’m playing.”
Any guesses what time signature they flip into (for example at "and the emptiness in her eyes was cruel to see")?
Madison Noble 7/4 is Rush time.
Great freaking song!
I'm not a musician so take it easy on me, but... Mike's guitar has twelve strings?
@Jimmy C
That is very interesting! I'm going to have to look some of that up. Thank you for the information.
+Jimmy C He only played with 6 strings on it. He must have liked a big neck
Gretsch 12-String Blonde Gretsch Guitar (Model 6076) custom made for Mike Nesmith. He liked Gretsch more than the more common Rickenbacker 12-String that was popular with greats like George Harrison and Roger McGuinn.
Joseph Trapani
George Harrison for the beatles?
@Joseph Trapani Sadly it was stolen a few years later...as of 2010 he hadn't gotten it back, was still looking for it.
si yea yea mexicano soy y arriba la paz :-)
love this song
mine as well
One of my favorite tracks from Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd.
Malcolm Lewis ...right ouuuuun 😎👍🏾✌🏾
Eu sei disso é que o governo federal para a gente tem de ser o seu nome e sobrenome Monkes
モンキーズ最高!
If you are old enough to remember, The Stone Ponies (whose lead singer was Linda Ronstadt) had a song out in the mid 60's called Different Drum. It was written by the talented man, Mike Nesmith, who is singing this song.
I was a senior in high school when the song Different Drum came out, but did not know Michael Nesmith wrote it. Interesting to know.
@Christine Gruenberg Mike wrote the song before the Monkees, and tried to get it used for the show but was turned down. He gave it to a friend in a bluegrass group who did record it, and Linda Ronstadt heard that record.
People seem to forget that Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were genuine songwriters.
Love the Monkees! Thanks for sharing. =)
the temptations and the Beatles are better
Pitty, I bet you have no friends.
Yes, insults are key to success.
brilliant song
the monkees were ahead of their time with the music videos, their tv show, and other things. love Mike's outfit, looks very handsome.
Peter SUCKED at syncing . Sadly he really was a real talent.
He still is.
If you look at Valleri, then you'll see terrible syncing. He is a talented man though
Mickey was a totally embarrassment . He was very creative but always played the fool even though he was a great rock vocalist.
Slightly different from the album version.
I also like Peter's guild Jetfire bass
Guild Jetfire you say? I read the comments to find out what bass that is, looks amazing, but the headstock borrows heavily from the Thunderbird.
Notice the Guild logo on his bass is covered on the headstock. Their contract with Gretsch wouldn't allow for any other brand to be shown on the tv show.
