Modest Mouse - People As Places As People Lyrics

To answer a question
It'll probably take more
If you're already there
Well then you probably don't know
Well we were the people
That we wanted to know
And we're the places that we wanted to go
It's hard to get hold of
And hard to let go
Always something we look for
From the day we were born
Instead we're the people that we wanted to know
And we're the places that we wanted to go
Yeah we're the places that we wanted to go
We're the places that we wanted to go

Always asking a question
And I don't want to know
Like the wind across strings
That had finally let go
And the people you love
But you didn't quite know
They're the places that you wanted to go
Bark at the neighbors
And then bark at the dog
Sniffing the wind
Whimpering for someone to know
But we were the people that we wanted to know
And we're the places that we wanted go
Yeah we're the places that we wanted to go
Yeah we're the places that we wanted to go

It was not the intention
But we let it all go
Well it messed up the function
And sure fucked up the flow
I hardly have people that I needed to know
'Cause you're the people that I wanted to know
All this scrambling around
Hunting high and then low
Looking for the face love
Or somewhere to go
I hardly have places that I need to go
'Cause you're the places that I wanted to go
Yeah you're the places that we wanted to go
Yeah you're the places that we wanted to go

You're the people that we wanted to know
Shouldn't have to ask
You shouldn't have to ask
'Cause we are your real place

All I was doing in the summer of 1993 was house sitting in Hollywood. My Dad and Grandmother had to auction off the estate and all the belongings in that house and I was supposed to consolidate all of it. I looked stupid even back then. I wore tan shorts and T shirts and wore combat boots and a black biker jacket. At one time I gave myself a mohawk. I was also fat and unattractive and had a black beard. My friends from Monterey came to visit and I met Bill Edwards, a screen extra in movies. I just went for walks around Hollywood during the day until I got mugged at gunpoint. I stayed up all night and watched TV and slept during the day. That was pretty much what happened.

Have you ever eaten a yellow watermelon?

Now California has been lying to Seattle for 38 years straight! All they do is give Seattle orders and suggestions and the dumb shits believe all of it. No Seattleite is ever ever going to be a famous Hollywood star! I do not get why people believe this shit! I live din Hollywood and I wanted no part of being famous there ever! If I could not be famous in Hollywood what makes Seattleites think they will be? Especially these lily white girls from Northgate!

  8. M.... I....

  11. r.... ....

Modest Mouse brings me some sweet nostalgia but not of memories, of feelings. it is like a feeling of freedom that I haven't felt in so long.

  12. t.... n....

    M.... J....

  18. S.... B....

    Slightly demented romance
Still a romantic song for me bittersweet and all

  19. R.... W....

Despite the futility of life, (which I understood when I was young.) I was not aware of just how dense the physics was embedded into all the music I listened to.

After I started seeing subatomic diagrams of particles, and wave function examples of the QED in music and everyday life, my reasons to want to die turned into a negative value. I wanted to know what I was missing. That thought was persevered, but the depression I had wasn't better, it was far worse even.. I just keep asking myself.. But what if..

Despite the futility of life, our agony is truth, it's our connection to the living. I think of the world when I hurt, and keep on existing.

Some would see their younger self as cocky or ignorant, but as I get older I realize more often how important it is to be good to yourself, too. Kids make each decision the way they felt was right, with the information given by adults.
    Little Rob was a genius.

    R.... W....

What the fuck did I just read?

    R.... W....

never assign any music to a person, that person break your heart and listen to this music never becomes the same. i love this music but i cant listen to it without having the feeling that glass pieces are coming into my heart.

    e.... d....

    i.... ....

    yes sir

    i.... ....

I started really listening to them back when I was using and taking everything I could get my hands on as a young teen...a bigger success is coming back to their music a while later when sober. The once-stifled emotions rush up like a flood in the best and worst ways. Jaw dropping.

    i.... ....

    T.... E....

    Tertulio Eustaquio like a hurricane

    T.... E....

Tertulio Eustaquio issacs the best modern lyricist In my opinion the best since classic rock anoyway

  41. G.... G....

Doesn't this song kinda have a Feelies flow to it?

  42. D.... ....

I love finding songs like this.

    D.... ....

Death in a noose is a good name for a fuck boy who wouldn't even be there when the neck snapped.

  43. R.... E....

This song continues to carry me through tough times. Beautiful.

  44. y.... ....

Just made my own meaning from this. The people that we always wanted is the people we wanted in ourselves. We're all sniffling and whimpering for somebody to know, for places to go (note, places being can be an archtype for culture, personality, etc) and we're the places and the people that we wanted to know. Take that, Freud!

  45. O.... ....

It's not the intention, but we let it all go
Well it messed up the function and sure fucked up the flow
I hardly had people that I needed to know
Cause you're the people that I wanted to know!!!

  46. T.... E....

Yes I believe in some of them, I saw them in Washington in 2008 or 09 and i do remember this being part of the show. It was a big show tho, maybe some smaller gigs they may have not played it

  47. U.... Z....

Do they even play this in gigs?

  48. e.... ....

    Truly beautiful

  49. N.... C....

song: "and there were no places we wanted to go."
    advertisement: "come to australia!"
    bad advertisement placement

  50. J.... ....

Fuck the hgc 1x plus. If I wanted to hear about that surely I would have looked it up. Fucking youtube making money off a band that doesnt even want it.

  51. p.... w....

Im here, where i want to be.

  52. N.... B....

Omg, my friend told me about this song, I love it! I really do.

  53. G.... ....

  56. n.... ....

Man, this song is awesome, I wish they would play stuff like this on the radio instead of the crap they normally put on.

    n.... ....

Brendan Maloney The great demon Moloch (or greater appeal,it depends) needs to be pleasured!

  57. y.... ....

    A M A Z I N G N E S S

  58. y.... ....

@Guercinator I always thought the father resembled Bob Weir somewhat.

  59. V.... ....

I hardly had places that I needed to go
Cause you're the places that I wanted to go.
    <3 Kristina

  60. G.... ....

  63. H.... T....

    TREE MAN! :'(

  64. G.... ....

@W0nd3r4ids4369 couldn't have said it better myself

  65. W.... ....

For all of you who think this song has deep lyrics, listen and interpret some of their older works. Not saying this isn't a great song, it's just I'm a fan of Modest Mouse because of Lonesome Crowded West, This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, ect. This song may 'sound' better, meaning it's more clean cut, but their older songs have lots of meaning. And to all those fans who dislike their new songs, that's just a shame, all their music is fantastic.

    W.... ....

Their whole discography is definitely full of philosophical beauty, and the older stuff does win me over a wee bit more, but I can't help but bring up "Parting Of The Sensory". That song is perhaps the most beautiful musical meditation I've heard on death.

  66. p.... ....

@1Babyboy100 i'm sorry if this is weird, but you're not from Coeur d' Alene are you? because i knew a Nico here that passed away earlier this year....

  67. G.... ....

    @1Babyboy100 wait, wut? r u talking to me or a friend/family member?

  68. e.... c....

i love you Nico. and miss you with all my hart. and think of you more than you think ps .x.o.xo 4 ever

  69. c.... ....

    @ThousandthSkies

Yep. That's probably the best lyric written in the last decade. What a great song.

  70. A.... Z....

One of my all time favorites. This song makes me melancholy in the best way possible. <3
