Modest Mouse - Ohio Lyrics

Took a bus straight to Baltimore
On the way he took a nap
Dropped off a note that said "I'm giving this note back"
PS- There's a lot going on underneath
There's roots there's pipes, there's drainage leaks
You're on, you're wrong, Ohio
Truly sorry, I see clearly
Calmly crashing, I pace faster than anyone
Hinges rusting, they swing louder than anything
Truly lonely this place is flatter than it seems
I'm upset and I leave the doors wide open
Our hearts are used up, cracked and dry
Pulled the scabs off of regrets
We haven't learned to read our conscience yet
Truly sorry, I see clearly
Hardy hoping, I spend it all on game machines
Calmly crashing, I pace and I figure out again
One hand clapping, awake but napping
Rows of lights to illuminate lines
Why don't they turn them off and let us see night
Drove crazed grooming my lies
You can't look in on one way eyes, Ohio

You can't look in on one way eyes

  2. O.... C....

I live in the mountains, far from flat. Yet this place is in fact flatter than it seems

  3. J.... B....

"Isaac Brock sure is singing 'good morning' a lot in this song."
-thoughts of a Japanese person listen to this song, probably

  4. E.... T....

This is one of my fucking favorite bands, definitely. Their natural sound and dissonance is amazing! <3

  5. M.... B....

Am from indiana, feel like some of these lyrics would fit better with my state. Compared to indiana, ohio feels like a metropolis

  6. p.... j....

Truly lonely, this place is flatter than it seems

  7. c.... b....

I’ve driven across this country a few times and I feel like modest mouse captures the beauty of driving across this country with their music. It was so weird because we went on a random road trip from Oklahoma to California and I just bought my brother a modest mouse cd for his birthday and having no knowledge of their music we brought the cd on the road trip and it’s talking about highways bleeding onto other highways and feeling dirty sitting in gas station parking lots. Great times man I’ll never forget it

  8. c.... b....

    Ohiooeeeeiiioooeeeioooo

  9. j.... f....

This very well might be the best modest mouse song

  10. D.... C....

never has a man been so filled w/self-loathing regret and so effectively channeled it into more beautiful vibes for the rest of the world

"I'm upset and I leave the door open wide
Our hearts are used up, cracked and dry
Pulled the scabs off of regrets
We haven't learned to read our conscience yet"

  11. J.... V....

He must've written this about the flat shitty part that the rest of us in NE Ohio would like to secede from. I mean it sucks here too, but the western part is where the Mid-West begins.

  12. W.... J....

Christ almighty.... using that as an interjection... heard this song for nearly two decades but god dammit what is it about this band?? It can't be just nostalgia because I've heard this shit for ages and every song has been heard at different points of my life but it just... exudes feelings that are timeless, someone's soul has been sold to make this.

  13. S.... S....

What happened on his long long drive to Florida from Ohio?

  14. B.... R....

Easily my favorite song of all time. Never fails to make me tear up at the moments it has accompanied me through. Modest mouse saved my life more than once.

  15. A.... F....

Modest Mouse. A legendary band that will live infinitely..... No way to be modest

  16. A.... B....

    Cool song.

  17. U.... ....

this song is such Midwest autism.

  18. Q.... ....

    [Chorus]
    Ohio
    Ohio
    Ohio
    Ohio
    Ohio

    You're on, you're wrong

    [Chorus]

    [Verse 2]
    Truly sorry, I see clearly

We haven't learned to eat our conscience yet
    Truly sorry, I see clearly
Hardly hoping, I spend it all on game machines

Ohio sucks and I can’t wait to move but I’ll miss something about it. Not sure what really.

  20. C.... W....

I get the sneaking suspicion this song isn't about Ohio;)

    C.... W....

    hatan sail actually about touring and the effects it can have on your life and relationships. But also Seattle to Ohio. It's a long drive c;

    C.... W....

frogblast im sure that's a part of it. But once you know about isaac Brocks meth habit he had for a long time, it gives a certain amount of extra context for some songs."hardly hoping, I spend it all on game machines." Game machines are a huge part of tweaker culture. I realize there are multiple interpretations possible, but it makes me smile inside when I catch his little drug hints:) thanks for the response.

    C.... W....

hatan sail i know what you mean but in most of his songs when he references meth he's not very subtle about it but very likely "calmly crashing" 'I pace faster than anyone" i know when i was tweaking i can certainly relate to a few lines in the song xD

    C.... W....

frogblast it's all nice on ice alright

    C.... W....

    it's not day and it aint night c;

  21. B.... L....

love his raw, raunchy guitar tone specially on this song

  22. N.... M....

As an Ohioan I can tell you this is the only thing our state has over Florida

    N.... M....

As a Floridian who went paddle boarding in December with clear blue skies at 75F and a wax pen and some girls in itty bitty bikinis this weekend, I can tell you, you are full of shit.
Albeit lots of fucking crazy terrible shit down here I wont deny that. But to say its nearly equal to being landlocked in a fucking tundra... Yea bite me.

  23. S.... P....

Speaks to me way to clearly.

  24. T.... S....

I want to like this song, but all I hear is the cheerio song on the guitar riff. "The one and only Cheerios"

  25. A.... ....

Having grown up in Ohio, this song really says it all. Ohio is a beautiful, lonely place. I love it and hate at the same time.

  26. L.... ....

i didnt know isaac spoke japanese

    L.... ....

    LMFAO!!!!

  27. N.... P....

    True genius...

  28. J.... W....

this shit is so gay but I can't stop singing it

  29. H.... ....

    I Love all of You

  30. j.... ....

ohio do not know , but after hearing this song I think it should be a good place

  31. K.... M....

Ohio is a beautiful sad happy place

i should know, I live here my whole place

    K.... M....

it could be a lot worse, not gonna lie. ive lived here my whole life as well. at least we don't pay $12+ bucks for a pack of cigs like NY.

    K.... M....

East tennessee is similar, I've been to Ohio a couple times

    K.... M....

LMAO when cigarette prices dictate your life, it might be time to drop that nasty fucking habit. Pick up a joint.

    K.... M....

    It doesn't help.

    Give me a new life.

    K.... M....

ap2pat one could say that's also a nasty habit

  32. A.... H....

in ohio i learned whats right from wrong, learned compassion, learned to love, learned beautiful sex

  33. B.... ....

An underrated classic Modest Mouse jam.

  34. D.... B....

This song is awesome cause I live in Ohio and I've always lived here

  35. I.... ....

Before hipsters were given the label hipster, my hipster friends used to rave about this band, but this is the only song I liked by them. It has a feeling similar to The Meat Puppets.

    I.... ....

Your hipster friend was on to some good shit.

  36. S.... L....

I love this song and the state. They're both beautiful.

    S.... L....

I live in Ohio and everyone here hates it

    S.... L....

Yeah, Ohio sucks pretty bad. This is a great song though.

    S.... L....

+Don Beck I live in ohio too, I love it I've been a lot of different places all over the place and I still love ohio you get 4 seasons and the music Scene is. Great idk there is a lot to like here.

    S.... L....

I'm from Ohio and sad I wasn't raised there.

    S.... L....

I live above Ohio, Ohio is a boring wasteland of nothingness

  37. D.... W....

Greatest band of all time. They have this way about them that just make life better when I listen to them

  38. W.... ....

Ohio seems desolate and this song makes it worse lol 0_o.

    W.... ....

What? Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, etc. Sure it has farmland but so does California

    W.... ....

I live in Ohio, it's desolate, the father you get away from the 3Cs, Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati

    W.... ....

    "Seems"

    W.... ....

I've lived here my whole life and I can tell you it's pretty boring here, it gets really cold and really hot, it doesn't snow on christmas, and everything is really old at the time of writing this

  39. F.... A....

I'm from Ohio. And I love this song only for that reason. GO BROWNS

    F.... A....

@Fuad Abdullayev Only for that reason? Not beside the fact that is a truly splendid piece of music?

    F.... A....

This song is soso. I don't recall posting this. Lol

    F.... A....

Wait people actually live in Ohio?

    F.... A....

+Greg Saiki Hey man we can't all live in California

    F.... A....

Did you write this comment in 1990? (Browns joke lol, I don't even know if that's the right date the Browns started sucking)

  40. D.... M....

I click the repeat button alot for this song...once is just not enough!

  41. G.... ....

MM is my favorite cause they remind me how much I love the world, but hate every bit of it at the same time <3

    G.... ....

moist towelette and do you still feel the same? As for myself I've heard this particular song hundreds of times and i always hear it differently but the same as well. I love duality! It's in everything

    G.... ....

i got really into modest mouse in 2015, the same year that i consider the worst year of my life. what a drag, such great music plagued by horrible memories but i cant stop listening.

    G.... ....

Goborobo Oh, wow! This is one year old.

    G.... ....

Reminds me of 2011 very bad year for myself but damn this band helped me pull through. Now they're my goto when it's all crawling up the wall headed for the fan.

    G.... ....

    Best comment ever

  42. a.... ....

  43. K.... S....

"Rows of lights to illuminate lines. Why don't they turn them off and let us see night? Drove crazed, grooming my lies.... You can't look in on one-way eyes."

This song contains some of the best lyrics in Modest Mouse's discography, and that line more than any other in this song.

    Get with the times, loser.

  53. D.... J....

I feel the song perfectly describes Ohio in every way possible. "This place is flatter than it seems."

  54. x.... s....

As someone who lived in Ohio for 5 years, then got moved to Arkansas with no choice, Ohio is a godsend.

    x.... s....

LMAO that point in your life when Ohio is heaven.

    x.... s....

  65. o.... ....

    I love people from Ohio.

  66. J.... W....

    Cool story.

  67. m.... m....

    ohio sucks balls

  68. M.... K....

What a truly great song, with tremendous lyrics. How is there any doubt about this simple fact? They chose to call it Ohio, and made a masterpiece of it. "Pull the scabs off of regrets", "One hand clapping," and the truly great OHIO reprise, says it all. I work in music and would take this song into any moment and time. Modest Mouse is a play on words kids, because there's nothing Modest about these profound lyrics and music.

  69. r.... ....

    MMFWCL from ohio as well

  70. C.... ....

Aye bb gurl u want sum fuk?

  71. L.... L....

this is a perfect clue as to why this band is old news, very old news, has beens, and not ever that good when they were on their game.

    L.... L....

    That's.. like.. just ya opinion

  72. r.... ....

I could think of plenty of worse states to live in/be from.

  73. K.... R....

sorry man, was just having a bad day and saw the word juggalo. they just really piss me off for some reason. im a music lover and saw that you like the stooges. pretty badass. but ya man just was in a bad mood, sorry.

  74. B.... a....

First of all, I do not appreciate you attacking me like that. I have done nothing to you. Second of all, I am not a juggalo. This account is extremely old. Even if I was, why would you strike at me out of hatred for "my culture"? That is just senseless. Before you go around prejudging people, just know that I probably know more about music than you can ever hope to.

    B.... a....

Brooms and mops you shouldn’t say you no more about music than someone else... and even if you did know more facts about music songs and bands so what? Maybe that person can feel music more than you...and that can be far more epic

  75. K.... R....

you always hear wrong lyrics because youre a dumbass juggalo. cool that you people listen to modest mouse too, but i hate your retarded culture, and icp.

  76. E.... ....

    truly sorry

  77. U.... ....

Jim Jarmusch - "Growing up in Ohio was just planning to get out"
This song is what happens if you don't.

  78. C.... ....

    MICHIGAN MOTHERFUCKERS

  79. C.... ....

    Great song, shit place.
    People from Ohio are cunts.

  80. R.... B....

    solid tune

  81. A.... G....

    I hate Ohio.

  82. C.... ....

I love this whole album, it's just amazing.

  83. B.... a....

I always thought he said "Roseff likes to illuminate lines..." rofl. I always hear the wrong lyrics, x).

  84. R.... E....

My favorite part of the song

  85. R.... ....

    OHIHIYIYOSO!!

  86. W.... ....

    * Mesa Boogie amp, my bad

  87. W.... ....

The way they use barely distorted tones, like a really slightly gritty tone (Built To Spill, baby :D), doesn't really remind me of Weezer, AT ALL.

If anything, every Weezer song pretty much has a super fuzzed out Mesa Boogie guitar, and barely any cleans.

  88. W.... ....

Man, and I thought the Poconos blew dick in the Winter.

Ohio must suck overall lol. Dustbowl from the drought?

Trust me, I only dig the Poconos May to Sept, thats about it. New York's tons better.

  89. A.... G....

Something tells me from living in Ohio for my entire life that this song isn't really cheering on Ohio. Fuck Ohio.

  90. c.... o....

    been to ohio......it sucked

  91. S.... S....

Wow. This song makes me never want to visit Ohio. ....actually, this song makes me never want to listen to Modest Mouse.

  92. C.... ....

    Truly. Sorry. I see. Clearly.
    LOVE IT

  93. r.... ....

    1 in a hundred is 70 million

  94. O.... ....

Rows of lights to illuminate lines. WHY, cant they turn them off and let us see night?

  95. l.... ....

Modest Mouse in Ohio pretty soon, here. :)

  96. j.... ....

the thing that makes me happiest about listening to modest mouse is thinking about how isaac was able to move forward from these bad times he wrote about. it should make everyone in a similar position hopeful for the future

  97. X.... S....

From Ohio. Fuckin MM rules!!! Too bad about 1 in 100 people lile MM!
