Mitchell, Kim - Battle Scar Lyrics

Been in jail for a thousand years
Found a fist in an empty field
Only quarters for meals
Feel the way I feel

Bust the busters
Screw the feeders
Make the healers
Feel the way I feel

Tried to understand the white man's fears
Make 'em bend but they wouldn't yield
Uncle Sam's time is only a greased wheel
Feel the way I feel

Best. Song. Ever. (to me, not looking for arguments)

What a song. Kim Mitchell is scheduled to play Batavia Downs Gaming, 7/5/19. I hope he has this song on the set list.

  26. B.... B....

May this particular RUSH fan doff my cap in Canadas general direction for this awesome powerful song. ( Geddy at 1.26 tho!! ) and would somebody be so kind as to post the lyrics so that I can finally put an end to making my own very x rated ones up....thank you very glad

  27. K.... T....

When I was done they felt the way I felt!

  28. J.... R....

The first time I heard this song I was 20 years old and afterwards proceeded to change into a horrible beast.

  29. M.... W....

Trailer park boys brought me here

  30. J.... S....

This is probably the last recording of Geddy singing in that classic Rush style. Right after this he totally changed his vocal style, I’m guessing to conserve his voice.

    J.... S....

He sang in his old high screeching style at the end of Freewill on Permanent Waves, also released in 1980.

  31. L.... S....

I love sharing this song, with my neighbors 😏

    L.... S....

    Thank you

  32. L.... S....

I never met a metal head, that didn’t like the intro, to this song. Instantly recognizable.

  33. N.... ....

Growing up in a rural area near Houston, we had an album rock radio station(KLOL), that had no problem playing 5 minute plus songs and this was in the rotation. In high school when this song hit the radio waves I had a 1957 Ford F100 stepside truck with a big block, 4spd trans and a pretty good audiovox stereo. Remember blasting this song hauling ass down the road. Great song, great times.

  36. R.... T....

Not sure who to credit the bass playing too. Max Webster’s bass player or Geddy. Best bass line ever though

  37. C.... C....

Geddy at the the 1.25 mark ..absolutely
    Classic vocals!!!!

  38. N.... F....

My god that fill @ 2:30. Peart the Professor of the drums 🤘

  39. c.... c....

This song a staple at keggers back in the day.

  40. J.... M....

And as I just learned Ray that both bands were managed by Terry Brown and there was a little competition between both bands that the first one to get their record recorded this track would be on that bands album. Max Webster won. But it was close. Almost could've been on Moving Pictures. Max Webster played this song a lot while on tour with Rush and at least Dirk said that Rush would like to record it with them. By the way it was recorded in Le Studio.

  41. D.... M....

I had the vinyl, still epic! Max Webster opened for RUSH in 1980/81 on Permanent Waves tour too!!

  42. L.... K....

I saw Rush over in Germany round about 1979 and there was supposed to be an opening act called Max Webster. Didn't have a clue who Max Webster was (wrongly assumed it was some guy named Max Webster lol). Must have gotten to the show too late to see the opening act, so I never gave it another thought until a few years later when I heard their name mentioned on FM radio along with this song. I immediately went out and bought the album. Woah! How come I never heard of these guys? If you go back to some of their earlier stuff, it almost sounds like a different band. Nothing like this one album. Interesting progressive rock, but not like this album. Kim was shredding before there was even a name for it. Amazing guitar work. I think this might have been their last album together. Kim took off on a solo career after that. Even then... still not like this album. I've often wondered where the idea came from for Universal Juveniles. It stands out as a gem among their entire catalog.

  43. G.... K....

Mitchell and Lee in particular bring out the absolute best in each other here. Phenomenal.

  44. D.... D....

Is it just me or does this album cover look like David Lee Roth pretending to be Eddie Van Halen? Yes I do know it's Kim Mitchell.

    D.... D....

Yeah, the unitard and the receding hairline, coupled with the athletic leaping lol

  45. s.... ....

Chills just from the memories of first hearing this! AND it's both bands, LIVE IN STUDIO??? Believe it or not I had FORGOTTEN that part! Damn, gettin' old sucks. Awesome. Just freakin' awesome.

  46. t.... ....

Great song, but Kim, we gotta burn that outfit -- that's some awful spandex.

  47. C.... ....

This made it to Pittsburgh radio for a minute. So did Might a
As Well Go For A Soda. My brother lived in Toronto at one time, working at the Molson brewery. Geddy Lee was his neighbor at one point.

  48. K.... M....

Max Webster opened for Rush during the Moving Pictures tour here in Indianapolis and I haven't been the same since. I truly do not understand why they did not take off here in the states. Thank you Kim Mitchell and Canada for some great music! (sorry we have to be such lousy neighbors!)

  49. b.... b....

I know the Battle Scar feeling to well.

  50. P.... S....

If I go deep into the deep recesses of my memory, I recall from a friend of a friend of mine who had a summer job at Phase 1 Studios around that time where this song was recorded in Toronto, that they experimented with the sound recording by taking the longest hall of the studio, somehow playing the music at one end, putting microphones every dozen feet or so down the hall and then mixed it together, including all the slight sound delays per microphone set, to get the incredible fat sound that you hear. Again, this was the late 70's and digital mixing boards and effects were not in use, it was still an analogue world so this is was certainly creative (interestingly enough, I believe Rush' Moving Pictures was one of the first albums to be fully recorded with digital technology front to back).

  51. j.... k....

"In the World of Giants" Smile our asses off.

  52. j.... k....

Listened on a walkman during class. Wow. Canadian Dio with too much booze.

  53. L.... S....

Larry feeds Kim mitchell and Myles goodwin-Talent-Genius.

  54. T.... R....

Saw Max Webster open for RUSH in 1977 and they were a trip...

  55. c.... ....

It's funny, the lyrics are honestly entirely unimpressive, especially compared to what you'd expect when Rush gets involved - only 12 unique lines - yet that somehow still manages to be enough for a full 6 badass minutes

  56. m.... ....

39 thumbs down? That’s 39 retarded people. Two of Canada’s greatest bands together. What’s not to like?!?

  57. R.... L....

In Toronto there were two kinds of people. Rush fans or Max fans. A friendly rivalry. Both kicked ass!!

  58. D.... H....

    Terrible album cover

    D.... H....

It's not good. But the music therein is great

  59. M.... P....

WTF! I bought this album in the 80s and would buy it again! Wicked awesome..

  60. D.... b....

thats niel pert forsure smashing them fills

    D.... b....

    Neil Peart yes

  61. D.... R....

Not to knock Rush out of the equation (they were very much there too) but Webster was the soundtrack to our parties growing up before The Hip came along to take over.  I love them both and am glad to have grown up in a time that I got to have the best of both worlds.

  62. S.... A....

They played this at my school. No one else noticed but me and a couple of other teachers

  63. M.... R....

This is why I LOVE CANADA!!! And they MASTERED the process of brewing barley, hops, and malt! Rock on, my Brothers from the Great White North! 🤘😎🍺

    M.... R....

    Cheers Brother !!!

    M.... R....

  67. K.... L....

  68. b.... ....

This should be Canadas anthem!!Love it Cheers

  69. k.... h....

YES ALL MEMBERS OF BOTH BANDS PLAYED ON THIS TRACK. WOULD HAVE HATED TO BE MAX WEBSTER'S DRUMMER THAT DAY...

  70. T.... I....

    What a kick ass song!

  71. J.... M....

So much to know. smooth and driving. this is awesome!

  72. P.... N....

This tune is a rare gem. I love it so much! Thank you for the up!

  73. T.... S....

naturally Pratt with his trademark drumfill.

  74. I.... X....

back in the early eighties a 400 watt amp hooked up to 6x9 Jensen tri-axle speakers really packed a punch with this tune

    I.... X....

hell yea! especially if they were in boxes with long speaker wires and you could take them out of the car and put on the roof to blow away the Highschool parking lot before school.

    I.... X....

Oh that's a riot, my best friend had that exact set up in a 76 Vegas hatchback

  75. T.... M....

I am a total RUSH FANATIC !!! That said, this MAX song is just phenomenal!!!!

    T.... M....

Listen to all their albums, they rarely missed.

  76. D.... J....

Geddys most flat out super wailing vocal of all time, and it's not even on a Rush record. That mankind is largely to stupid to get Max Webster is a great shame.

  77. R.... P....

Awesome song from my younger days 50 and I still rumble the house with this song.....

    R.... P....

I bout to turn 50 and just found this. I love it. Man, Geddy Lee, once he started singing..... I knew I just found some treasure. Been you tubing Max Webster for a couple days when this came on.

    R.... P....

    no doubt

  78. F.... M....

The idea of naming the band Max Webster was a play off of Jethro Tull and the idea of naming a band after someone who was not in the band.

  79. T.... H....

while playing with RUSH, bo- ya'!!!!!!!!!

  80. T.... H....

boy's and girls, this is how you do it!!!!!!!!

  81. B.... E....

Max Webster and Geddy Lee are working together in this song.

  82. H.... J....

Still such a powerful and awesome song after so many years

  83. D.... K....

I e think of people In jail when hearing this song. brings them a smile  I hope. rush and max . so cool

  84. D.... H....

    Fuck I love this song.

  85. M.... W....

Shit, i was there with my bro at the old forum in Montreal show back in the eighties. Gee.......Maxwebster was the opening act. Moving pictures tour for Rush

  86. M.... W....

Mixture of Maxwebster and Rush. You can really feel it! Great song. I like the chords a lot! Bands should this more often!

  87. D.... W....

    we all love

  88. G.... O....

The first time I heard Max Webster was on the radio in of all places- Clovis, New Mexico. I was in the Air Force and one of the local stations would feature a new album every week, and that's when I heard Live Magnetic Air.

    G.... O....

I was the DJ that played that album back in '79! It was a Sunday show I had called Sunday Buffet on KKQQ where they would turn me loose free form to basically play what I wanted for 6 hours....

    G.... O....

lash larue KKQQ! Holy shit! Small world! I was at Cannon from March 1979 through August 1982. Then I went back home to Rhode Island where I still live today.

    G.... O....

Still live here-went back on the air from '95 to '01 and then again from '05 to '07 on station KKYC with a show called Metal Shop and a theme show called Rock 101. Really loved turning people around here on to new stuff as well as playing requests. Some of my most loyal listeners were the ones from CAFB. Hope you are still discovering great old/new stuff...

    G.... O....

lash larue I remember I dropped a bundle on vinyl at Town Crier and House Of Color. And I fondly remember chicken fried steak at the Snazzy Pig! These days I listen to Sirius XM for my metal, on Octane, Ozzy's Boneyard, Liquid Metal and Hair Nation. On the local rock station out of Providence, we had a show called The Metal Zone every Saturday at Midnight, hosted by Dr. Metal. Unfortunately, he was one of 100 people who perished in the Station night club fire back in 2003 when Great White was playing.

    G.... O....

    awesome song

  89. d.... ....

Is David Stone on the keyboards here?

    d.... ....

    David stone from rainbow?

    d.... ....

    Terry Watkinson played keys.

  90. l.... h....

The BEST FUCKING SONG ON EARTH!

  91. k.... k....

this song has so much power to it

  92. A.... P....

Unfortunately, I never got to see MW, but caught Kim Mitchell, in a surprise set with Harbinger at the Gasworks(Toronto) in the mid eighties. A ~20 to 30 min set, what a great surprise!

  93. H.... v....

Awesome song. 2 Drums, 2 Guitars and 2 Vocalists. Rush with Max Webster. Great sound, great song!

  94. P.... ....

They were supposed to open for Rush in Mobile Alabama but broke up just an hour before the concert. Rush played the whole show. Great Show

  95. a.... ....

Lordy, this kicks so much arse. Two great bands going toe to toe and destroying all in their path. Love it! The guitars are just monumental and the vocals make the hair stand up on the back my neck.

    a.... ....

adam872 absolutely! Completely bad ass tune!!!

  96. V.... Y....

Actually saw Max Webster opening for Rush at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in 77 can't remember if Geddy lee sang to this song. Marijuana induced at the time.

    V.... Y....

The usual M.O. was it was Max's last song and Rush did join the band for it to segway into their sets.

    V.... Y....

maybe in 1980, this song wasnt out in 77

    V.... Y....

Geddy wore a mask when I saw them.

  97. O.... N....

I love the heavy metal vibe of this song. Also, it's one of Geddy's best vocal performances.

    O.... N....

+Olga Nesterowicz Kim Mitchell is also great!

    O.... N....

    The unofficial Canadian anthem!!!

    O.... N....

    Olga Nesterowicz

    O.... N....

I know right crazy it's not even on their album. It did lead to the lyrics for Tom Sawyer though as Max Webster lyricist Pye Dubois wrote those lyrics and gave them to Rush as a thanks.

    O.... N....

So rare that he got a chance to sing harmony, very cool.

  98. J.... C....

On: the line, " ...make'em bend but they wouldn't yield". It seems to me that the more unyielding laws are the more breakable they become. No? Just a thought. I think that history backs me on that point. At any rate, ultimately, we all to one degree or another, are doomed to repeat it.
