Mitchell, Joni - Good Friends Lyrics

I have to come and see you--
Maybe once or twice a year--
I think nothing would suit me better
(Right now)
Than some downtown atmosphere ...
In the dance halls and the galleries
Or betting in the OTB
Synchronized--like magic
Good friends you and me
The sun goes down in Jersey
Rises over Little Italy--
We could talk it up 'til the block gets up
Swapping stories
Sitting around in some all night zoo
Watching it run like a movie
Synchronized--like magic
Good friends you and me
No hearts of gold
No nerves of steel
No blame for what we can and cannot feel
But now it's cloak and dagger
Walk on eggshells and analyze
Every particle of difference
Gets like mountains in our eyes
You say, "You're unscrupulous!"
You say, "You're naive!"
Synchronized--like magic
Good friends you and me
No hearts of gold
No nerves of steel
No blame for what we can and cannot feel
Sometimes change comes at you
Like a broadside accident
There is chaos to the order
Random things you can't prevent
There could be trouble around the corner
There could be beauty down the street
Synchronized--like magic
Good friends you and me
No hearts of gold
No nerves of steel
No blame for what we can and cannot feel
No nerves of steel
No hearts of gold
No blame for what we can and can't control
Good friends you and me
Good friends you and me

  4. s.... ....

Poor French TV back then! I HAD NEVER seen the video and didn't even imagine there could be one!!!! So grateful today!

  5. C.... Q....

Well, yeah, Joni Mitchell did a few good dance numbers. Pretty stunning in this case.

  6. J.... P....

Yacht Rock really ain't it 👍

  7. l.... ....

This album was a gem from start to finish.

  8. C.... B....

Shouldve gone to melbourne concert hall show

  9. M.... ....

Dolby's influence on this record is unmistakable, and welcome. Both are artists I hold close, and this track speaks to all of us who expect more from their friends than they can deliver. McDonald adds a wonderful dimension to this.

  10. C.... W....

I have a lot of good stories, looking for friends to share & work it out with forget those blues, laugh a little. Jonie my fav. Heartache needs friends, healing process everyone wants to be heard, everyone has stories to tell. Incredible video...

  11. M.... T....

    One of her best.

  12. M.... T....

I remember it was such a trip to get to see Joni on MTV when this aired in '85. I never could figure out, though, why they didn't have Michael McDonald play the male character in the video, instead of using some random actor. Maybe he was unavailable when they were shooting it?

    M.... T....

    He is her second husband.

  13. e.... ....

Looking to contact you about a Joni interveiw you have uploaded... wanted to use an audio clip on a tribute to Joni radio show... [email protected]

  14. G.... ....

    <3 Michael Landau

  15. J.... L....

I have been playing this video over and over. I love the song and the video. I love to see Joni smile, which she does a lot in this video. Love the programming Thomas Dobly did--you can really hear his influence. I would have loved to have heard a dance/club mix for this song! Any d.j.'s out there willing to work their magic?

  16. E.... p....

    hot damn.. I am so glad I’m 1950 s born...got to enjoy and savour the 60s, 70s and 80 s and even early,90s when
I was varying stages of young, hot, sexy, “woke” and sooo, energised. seriously GOOD times! t sure we will ever see their like again...

  17. P.... M....

Thank YOU 'sonicboy .. ' for THIS posting ... !

  18. K.... ....

Fantastic song, though I don't really think Jim Blashfield's direction style was entirely necessary; didn't seem to really know what to do with it here. ....was that John Moschitta Jr, though?

  19. T.... T....

The Dog Eat Dog album really isn’t that bad of an album. I can see why it was so panned because it was a drastic departure for Joni. But it was really only in instrumentation, the lyricism that she became famous for was still there. Joni along with a lot of artists from her era were just trying to compete with a completely different musical atmosphere to what they were accustomed to. The 80s was the first era that was image driven thanks to MTV. Difficult for an artist that didn’t focus on their looks as much as they did the music. Thus, very few artists from the 60s/70s saw major success in the 80s. But what she did make during that period was still solid stuff. I still think Wild Things was her best 80s album but Dog Eat Dog is a close second!

  20. R.... E....

This is still the best video of all-time so far!

  21. P.... M....

I was (as well) ALIVE thence ... what a wonderful ride/presence ... too bad it HAS to end/disappear SOON ... !

  22. P.... M....

    Another MARVEL ... !

  23. P.... C....

A beautiful, haunting song with just a touch of lyrical ambiguity, which is, of course, yet another of Joni's musical trademarks.
I'm ashamed to admit that back in the 80's I was a bit taken back and disappointed when Joni began wearing her hair differently, but ultimately I realized that she was still the same wonderful, incredible woman that she always was and still is------Euterpe incarnate.

  24. I.... ....

I have never seen this before, it is amazing. Thank you.

  25. M.... ....

Where's the I'm in love button.

  26. A.... W....

Great unique video by Joni Mitchell and wonderful background vocals by the great Michael McDonald at his finest.

  27. T.... ....

A great pairing and a briliant song and have never seen the video before . Really cool - thanks for posting

  28. G.... R....

Jim Blashfield, the director is best known for animation and film.

  29. E.... A....

Why is this no longer available to view (In Europe?) ??!? Desperate to see it again, one of my faves

    E.... A....

I checked the copyright restrictions for this file and it available globally. The only restriction listed is that it cannot be viewed on some types of devices such as mobile phones, gaming consoles and set-top boxes. In other words, it should work if you're on a desktop or laptop computer. Not sure about tablets. Also, if you're viewing it through an app, try accessing it through a standard internet browser instead. If you're doing all of these things and you still can't view it, it would have to be a glitch in which YouTube is not detecting your system correctly and hopefully it will resolve itself in time.

    E.... A....

Hey, thanks- yeah doesn't seem to responding on mobile device or desktop, shame! Thank you though.

  30. M.... B....

Joni eats Pumpkin Pie near the End!

    M.... B....

That moment was weird. She eats a piece of pie and then "sings" with it in her mouth.

  31. E.... P....

Always loved this song and it is a brilliant video.

  32. d.... ....

this song and its whole production sensibility makes me feel like I'm on cocaine. I feel almost compelled to start gurning and chewing on nothing

  33. D.... M....

    Pure Talent!

  34. h.... ....

Dog eat dog and Chalk mark are mid 80s twin lbums. The better twin being dog eat dog. A mother always has a favourite chile`

    h.... ....

Funny. I vastly prefer Chalkmark! To each their own.

    h.... ....

Well, vastly? Hm. Dog eat dog is so amazing With its 8os synth and guitar duelling that sounds like no other time period. Great older artists who did albums in 85-86 either scored big artistically or missed big time. so many missed, but joni delivered a true gem, and again in 88 the twin chalkmark. In 91 artists from the 60s and early 70s were beginning to cherish there pasttime and night ride home is a great album With nothing sounding 80s anymore. Joni is one of the Three best pop artists of all time. That is an amazing feat.

    h.... ....

And to think she herself already said she didn't like much of the outcome of this album production wise...come on Joni...this was the 80's and ironically the sound beautifully matches the lyrical content of the whole album...from a Joni (or a hardcore Joni fan) standpoint it might not be the typical Joni album, but really stood well to the test of time...for a 80's album!...

    h.... ....

    hasekdom ....
I must respectfully disagree.....I find chalk mark far superior for songwriting, and rhythmic complexity....both Jems

  35. c.... ....

the mighty michael mcdonald b.g. vocals.

  36. E.... T....

    Brilliant song, great video!

  37. R.... A....

    Fuerza Joni!

  38. u.... ....

I got this on Saturday on 7 inch for 99p, great song

  39. d.... d....

Bought this album during a warm, dry spring in Spain in 1986 while wandering around that country. Now I listen to it in the miserable, dark, cold spring in 2015.

This was music for artsy circles and educated women before artsy was even a word used by anyone.

    d.... d....

dampen damp yuppp. Great lp indeed. And you nailed it. Cold miserable spring! We always get screwed out of a spring here in ny, and always get an early winter too. I hate it

  40. g.... ....

    Surreal, great, wow!

  41. n.... ....

You can keep your Madonnas, and Gagas, and Minajs and Mileys. Joni is the real thing.

    n.... ....

ummm i'd still say Madonna can produce art...it's become slightly hip to bash her the past few years, but she's putting out better music than the Katy Perry's, Pinks, etc...she's on her what, 4th decade now?

    n.... ....

I do agree that if I had a choice between say Nicki Minaj or Joni, I’d pick Joni by a long shot. But that’s a very broad comparison. Considering Nicki Minaj, Gaga and Madonna are pop artists who don’t have as much influence in folk or jazz as Joni did. Joni’s more than a pop artist imo and that’s not to say those others aren’t talented. They are. They’re just in a league of their own. But if you wanna compare Joni to anyone else, I’d say compare her to her contemporaries aka the folk-pop-jazz artists of her era like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Carly Simon, James Taylor and Carole King. They were all pretty much doing the same thing in regards to building their craft and writing songs about their experiences. Their inflections and nuances, however, all had a uniqueness to them.

    n.... ....

    Joni is a genius

    n.... ....

nealae1234 Guess what to all the people putting down Madonna and her music..She herself is a huge Joni fan and always has been I had read in an interview! Hows that for irony! Lol I like them both but I ABSOLUTELY love Joni more hands down have been a fan almost 20 yrs and I started out really liking her folk work but have preferred the jazzier stuff for many years now. I really love all of her body of work . To the Queen!👑🎶💖.😀😁👍🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶The best Madonna albums I love are Erotica, bedtime stories, ray of light💕🎶

    n.... ....

Oh, don't you know it. Joni is, indeed.

  42. t.... ....

Btw, the picture of the both of them at :35 is awesome. <3

  43. t.... ....

Jim Blashfield did the art animation for this, just like he did for "I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz and "And She Was" by the Talking Heads. :)

    t.... ....

Don’t forget “The Boy in the Bubble” by Paul Simon, Michael Jackson’s “Leave Me Alone,” and “Sowing the Seeds of Love” by Tears For Fears.

  44. M.... C....

    Good... increíbles recuerdos!
