Mitchell, Joni - Coyote Lyrics

No regrets Coyote
We just come from such different sets of circumstance
I'm up all night in the studios
And you're up early on your ranch
You'll be brushing out a brood mare's tail
While the sun is ascending
And I'll just be getting home with my reel to reel
There's no comprehending
Just how close to the bone & the skin & the eyes
And the lips you can get
And still feel so alone
And still feel related
Like stations in some relay
You're not a hit and run driver
No no
Racing away

You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway

We saw a farmhouse burning down
In the middle of nowhere
In the middle of the night
And we rolled right past that tragedy
Till we turned into some road house lights
Where a local band was playing
Locals were up kicking and shaking on the floor
And the next thing I know
That coyote's at my door
He pins me in a corner and he won't take no
He drags me out on the dance floor
And we're dancing close and slow
Now he's got a woman at home
He's got another woman down the hall
He seems to want me anyway
Why'd you have to get so drunk
And lead me on that way

You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway

I looked a coyote right in the face
On the road to Baljennie near my old home town
He went running through the whisker wheat
Chasing some prize down
And a hawk was playing with him
Coyote he's jumping straight up & making passes
He had those same eyes just like yours
Under your dark glasses
Privately probing the public rooms
And peeking through keyholes in numbered doors
Where the players lick their wounds
And take their temporary lovers
Their pills & powders to get them through this passion play
I'll have no regrets Coyote
I just get off up aways

You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway

Coyote's in the coffee shop
He's staring a hole in his scrambled eggs
He picks up my scent on his fingers
While he's watching the waitresses' legs
He's too far from the Bay of Fundy
From appaloosas and eagles and tides
And the air conditioned cubicles
And the carbon ribbon rides
I'm spelling it out so clear
Either he's going to have to stand & fight
Or take off out of here
I tried to run away myself
To run away and wrestle with my ego
And with this flame
He put here in this Eskimo
In this hitcher
In this prisoner
Of the fine white lines
Of the white lines on the free free way

Mitchell, Joni Coyote Comments
  1. P.... B....

Oh hell, JONI MITCHELL. A woman who was born and wired to look straight through the bullshit and write honest songs about it.

  2. J.... H....

Jack Pastorus owns this song. Top 3 Bassists of all time. Too bad he had a death wish. Phenomina song

  3. P.... H....

The bad ass bass on this

  4. M.... J....

I wonder what Sam Shepard thought of this song, since he's the Coyote

  5. s.... h....

to me , her best song,

  6. G.... M....

Love this haunting, magical song that takes me back to my youth and my impossibly handsome coyote guys that I could not resist. I love the soul of Jodi Mitchell.

  7. j.... s....

I once listened to song on repeat for days. She seems to have touched a many soul in a special way. I'm always in awe pondering how is it possible she can make me feel the way her and her music makes me feel. I would hope she reads all the comments people have left adoring her on youtube.

  8. D.... P....

so great that she shared this time on earth with us

  9. C.... B....

Her song out of the ordinary.how could she sing it well.wow

  10. M.... C....

..Jaco Pastorious on bass ...that was magical ....thank you Joni

  11. A.... D....

    Jaco on bass????

  12. A.... S....

Thanks for posting one of the most magnificently beautiful songs ever created.

  13. A.... V....

I think this may be her best song ever. It’s incredible.

    A.... V....

It's certainly one of the highlights on the album 'Hejira'. Superb lyrics, awesome vocals and fantastic instrumentation.

  14. W.... L....

I like Joni. This isn't my type of music but I keep always coming back. Why?

    W.... L....

If i may venture a reply, because pure genius cannot be denied, no matter the genre of music!

    W.... L....

@jakollee I appreciate the reply. 😍😉 I'm inspired by Joni. She is truly a genius. I actually saw her live in 99. She was a boss then. Unbelievable talent.

  15. M.... S....

A remarkable poet with a broad range of language who can also tell a story. Not to mention her fantastic voice. When everything comes together as they do on this song, WOW! It always knocks me out. Always. Specifically, I love watching Joni sing "Coyote" on the Band's movie "The Last Waltz." She just disappears into the words and rhythm as if there is no one present except herself and the music. A beautiful moment.

  16. C.... F....

yup Rolling Thunder - fab clip - also Scarlet Rivera is a close musician friend guesting on my up coming debut - watch this space for 'Wild Wild Things' duet with Julie Felix - dues for release late 2019 - www.foskettsfolkfactory.com

  17. D.... H....

This whole Album shuts down anything done in the last 20 years by fevocalists.

  18. N.... B....

    RIP Jaco

    N.... B....

    A genius unlike no other.

    N.... B....

@Anita SmithHe left this world much to soon

  19. J.... T....

Who else came here after watching her play this on the Dylan Rolling Thunder Revue documentary on Netflix?

    J.... T....

    I did it. :-)

    J.... T....

    John Tucker yeah;)

    J.... T....

Yes. This was an awesome part where Dylan was playing guitar with her singing in that back room. Ridiculous footage

    J.... T....

    John Tucker me!

  20. J.... G....

    very cool

  21. n.... r....

Great opening line "No regrets coyote".

  22. j.... b....

That's the best bass tone ever.

  23. P.... D....

So love the way Jaco plays on this with one of my favorites, JONI ! I had the amazing fortune of Jaco jamming with me in my bedroom in Pompano, Fl. My sister called me to tell me he was sitting in with Copland Davis at a club on Federal Highway. A night I will never forget. The last thing Jaco said as he was leaving that night was, "Hey Phil, thanks, you're a great guy - Keep Practicing"! Well, at least he didn't tell me I sucked.

  24. J.... S....

sorry you got raped dear.it was dangerous for guys rtooo

  25. B.... M....

For the under 60/65 crowd who dont know squat or was there in the day how this road tune/times of the day rural west coast tune relates to. Too bad after Hejera Joni got off track with overdose jazz influence, and voice downhill from there from chain smoking. In my mind her signature/early 70's tune is 'Help me'. 'Song from Sharon' and 'Black crow' another great Hejera tune. God if I could only go back to early or mid 70's.

  26. C.... B....

Fell in love with Joni when she was a guest at the Bands, last waltz

    C.... B....

Me too! Saw her in the last waltz and went straight to my local record shop and asked for every record she'd made. I wasn't disappointed. Wonderful music.

  27. I.... d....

How can I love this song so much

  28. A.... a....

    Jaco & Joni star crossed...

  29. j.... h....

This song used to get airplay on stations in Chicago when it came out. I was a teenager then. When was the last time great music like this was heard on the radio? 20, 30 years ago? I haven't turned on my car radio in decades.

  30. I.... F....

Very much soul in this music!

  31. R.... S....

    RIP Jaco ..What a loss....

  32. m.... ....

Jaco is the best bass player of all time. So so SOOO beautiful. Love that cat, miss him dear.

    m.... ....

    Resplendent.

  33. V.... ....

I want to cry when I hear these harmonics. RIP

  34. D.... C....

Joni Mitchell was a painter. Somehow, I feel this explains how she is/was so in touch with her emotions, and how she is able to make her feelings come across so well in a song.

  35. M.... P....

with regard to her 75th celebration, it's most sad that she seemed to be half there and half not. i hate brain injuries where magnanimous individuals don't get to reflect on their own accomplishments.

  36. f.... d....

this music can never be duplicated --

  37. f.... l....

The song kicks ass because it is a love song to Sam Sheppard

    f.... l....

    uh, Neil Young I believe...

  38. M.... P....

as a person who generally doesn't resonate with poetry, this touches me in so many ways.. . and that's just the lyrics. the muscianship (especally the bass, shout out to Jaco!) and her cadence takes it to a completely ethereal level.

  39. D.... H....

pop music almost pornographic now. no subtlety...no literacy. just in your face. this is poetic sexuality of the most sublime essence.

    D.... H....

this wasn't considered pop music then. If you want like for like, compare it to the pop music of 1975/1976. It wasn't aimed at teenagers and it certainly wasn't popular, it had low sales compared to her previous albums

  40. P.... M....

    Pure class Joni!

  41. L.... M....

    GENIUS!!!!

  42. M.... P....

Every thing from the delicate intricacy of the music, to the genius of the metaphors to her theatrical cadence. Pure brilliance. I just heard this song for the first time in my life last night because I'm an avid Prince fan, from childhood, and she was mentioned (again) in a blog dedicated to him. She was one of his abject IDOLS. I can't stop listening to it.

    M.... P....

    Ms Phoenix269 good 🌹✨

  43. V.... ....

    jump up and down..

  44. K.... F....

On your knees, bastards, pray to Joni and Jaco!

  45. F.... W....

    Such a talented artist

And you're up early on your ranch
You'll be brushing out a brood mare's tail
    While the sun is ascending
And I'll just be getting home with my reel to reel
    There's no comprehending
Just how close to the bone and the skin and the eyes
And the lips you can get
    And still feel so alone
    And still feel related
    Like stations in some relay
You're not a hit and run driver, no, no
    Racing away
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway

I looked a coyote right in the face on a highway between Pahrump and Baker today. Slowed my bike down , asked for directions.........no answer.........just a stare.

  53. t.... ....

I was not much than a kid when I was raped while hitch hiking.  Afterwards I played this song non stop as part of my healing. Maybe that makes no sense, but that song was a solace to me.  And maybe that's not what this song is about at all--but--"he pins me in a corner and he won't take no....'why'd you have to lead me on that way.'.."  Which is what he said, almost word for word when he started his assault. So whatever these lyrics mean for real, thank you Joni for this song, which will always mean something so deep and dark to me, and yet so affirming in ways I can't possibly explain.  Amazing how music like this can cut so deep, and then offer a way to heal over that most deepest of wounds.

    t.... ....

Very sorry for what happened. The song is supposedly about a brief affair with playwright-action Sam Shepard, who was married at the time and was actually seeing another woman when he met Joni (the meaning of the line "He's got a woman at home/He's got another one down the hall")

  81. d.... ....

My son goes to a Barenaked Ladies concert and gets to talk to the band members afterward. While talking to Jim Creeggan, he tells him, "You're my second favorite bass player." Creeggan looks taken aback, sort of defensive and says, "Well then, who's your favorite?" Son: "Jaco Pastorius." Creeggan's attitude immediately changes with a big smile, "Wow, you think I'm almost that good?!?"

they don't know how to play. so many classically trained musicians from this era.

    J.... S....

Look up Jessica Pratt and Julia Holter. Two genius songwriters of today who both happen to be women. Stop dismissing all the good music from today because the only crap you hear is the bullshit that's fed to you.

    thanks, i'll look them up!

    No podemos entendernos.

    No regrets Coyote
We just come from such different sets of circumstance
I'm up all night in the studios
And you're up early on your ranch
You'll be brushing out a brood mare's tail
    While the sun is ascending
And I'll just be getting home with my reel to reel
    There's no comprehending
Just how close to the bone and the skin and the eyes
And the lips you can get
    And still feel so alone
    And still feel related
    Like stations in some relay
You're not a hit and run driver, no, no
    Racing away
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway
We saw a farmhouse burning down
    In the middle of nowhere
In the middle of the night
And we rolled right past that tragedy
Till we turned into some road house lights
Where a local band was playing
    Locals were…

"He's staring a hole in his scrambled eggs," best line from a fantastic song.

    S.... B....

very few audience attendants appreciate the gravity of this song and it takes a special type of listener to enjoy it.

    S.... B....

That's the line I always remember.. LOL

@David Higginbotham "He picks up my scent on his fingers while he's watching the waitress' legs" - sums up the male psyche in one image.

  93. W.... M....

I love this song.  I first heard this in Korea in 78.  My room mate had the album and as soon as I got stateside a bought a copy .  Still have it, and the CD too lol.

This reminds me of my young self

Love Jaco on this, he makes the already incredible song by Joni even better! And yes, Jaco is as much the "Florida Sound" as Jimmy Buffett!

wow so true. This period for me is the ultimate mix, beautiful vocals and some amazing instrumentation

  96. R.... E....

    Quite the gem.
Strange that her best songs all start with the letter "C". In no particular order:
Circle Game Carey Coyote Clouds (aka both sides now) Conversation and last but certainly not least...Court and Spark

    R.... E....

Help Me and You turn me on...I'm A Radio are also fantastic. I think they are 2 of her best, even if they were commercial.

    R.... E....

    Don't forget Cactus Flower <3

    R.... E....

AliAdenwala You mean Cactus Tree. Whatever the title, it's still one of her best, though👍. Easily the best on a debut I find to be otherwise quite boring. But I love the seven albums after that one. They're undying classics. Along with Joni herself❤️
