Missing Persons - The Closer That You Get Lyrics

When you follow your dreams

You turn to find the light has faded
You wonder what it was you were reaching for
How quickly you have lost your way
It's always when you think you've got it made

You take one step after the other
At times you may not know which way to go
You open one door just to find another
Someday you will begin-begin to know

They told you, they told you
You didn't listen to a word they said
It takes so long to remember
But then how quickly they forget

The closer that you get
The harder that it seems
You never know what's next
When you're following your dreams

Dreams-find you
When you follow-falling
Dreams-remind you
In tomorrows-calling

(You never know what's next)

You take one step after the other
At times you may not know which way to go
You open one door just to find another
Someday you will begin-begin to know

You never know what's next
You won't ever know what's next
You won't ever know what's next
You won't ever know what's next
(When you follow your dreams)
You never know what's next
You won't ever know what's next
You won't ever know what's next
You won't ever know what's next
(When you follow your dreams)

The closer
The closer that you get
The harder
You never
You never know what's next
When you follow
The closer
The closer that you get

I see this band and this album have never got justice. The closest a full album of their best, this album, is available, is this collection, and their best song, a sleeper, "surrender your heart" is missing.. figures.

  15. JANXDPDX

it seems like the real 80's only lasted about 4 or 5 years

    James T Callahan

Very true, JANXDPDX...I would say the heart of it was from 1982 - 1986, for me, at least. While there was still a lot of great 80’s music that came out from 87-89 (Depeche Mode, et al), popular Rock music had moved away from the heavy electronicization we hear on this track (and album), which was characterized by the use of Simmons drums and FM synthesis. These tools and their subsequent developments became the facilitators of Rap Music, later to be termed ‘Hip-Hop’, and Club/Dance Electronica/House Music. Also, in my case, I had returned to my Hard Rock roots after 1986 and there was certainly some great music still coming down the pipe in that genre...until it was overpowered by the aforementioned. Cheers!

  16. Jennifer Maynard

Found this tape at some store in 1989 for 50¢. So glad I got it because it played non-stop in my tape player the summer of 89. My fave new wave band ever!

    James T Callahan

Jennifer Maynard Yes!! It’s a great summer album, in’t it? I bought it at Starwberries in Boston in 1984 at the end of my first year of college. It was a beach staple then and has remained a quintessential Summer favorite ever since. God Bless Dale Bozzio...she is a true innovator and creative icon of the highest order whose influence on later female pop artists is a vitally important contribution...she paved the way for the likes of Lady Gaga and many others.

  17. D. Nez

Missing Persons on top of their game. Bad-ass!

    M.G. Gallagher

    Oh, yeah.

  18. Jeremy Feit

    ShyGurl

  20. Glenn Brown

Along with 'Give,' 'Closer' is my favorite 'Rhyme' tune. In fact, this track and 'Give' sort of form one song as together, they open the album powerfully.
