Miranda, Lin-Manuel - Alabanza Lyrics
[USNAVI:]
She was found and pronounced... at the scene
She was already lying in bed
The paramedics said
That her heart gave out...
A combination of the stress and the heat...
Why she never took her medicine, I'll never understand
I'd like to think she went out in peace
With pieces of bread crumbs in her hand
Abuela Claudia had simple pleasures
She sang the praises of things we ignore
Glass Coke bottles, bread crumbs, a sky full of stars
She cherished these things, she'd say: “Alabanza.”
Alabanza means to raise this
Thing to God's face
When she was here, the path was clear
And she was just here, she was just here...

Miranda, Lin-Manuel Alabanza Comments
Abuela Claudia always reminds me of my grandmother, they are similar in many ways (Coincidentally she also didn't take the medicines that the doctor gave and kept saying "Paciência e fé" which is the same thing that Abuela Claudia said but in Portuguese)
I had this playing as the ball dropped, its 2020 now
2:41 When Nina started belting in the back, the song reminded me of I'll Cover You Reprise when Joanne starts singing
Oh my god. I was going through the In the Heights soundtrack, appreciating the sheer art of the musical. As an upper middle class white woman, this story is very distinctly not my story... and that’s okay. That’s great, even. We need stories like this, that represent the whole of the American experience. But it meant that, though thoroughly appreciative of the sheer genius of both the storytelling and music, I was a little disconnected listening to most of it. Fun characters. A wonderful setting. But not something I can really relate to.
Until this song. Hearing Lin’s lyrics in the beginning talking about the beautiful way in which this woman looked at the world broke me. Hearing the mournful tone of the singers reciting Claudia’s mantra has me sobbing. It hit me suddenly, but it hit me HARD.
Incredible.
my abuela is also not really my abuela, she kept every scrap of paper we gave her, she prayed for each of her grandkids every night, she kissed my cheek and she smiled and laughed with me, and she saw me. She actually looked at me and saw me, as a person. Abuela Elza, you don't have much time left, and you don't remember me very well when I visit, you don't remember much. But I'll smile and hold your hand and remember for us both. And when your time comes, and your pain ends
Alabanza Abuela Elza
oh, I wont be able to handle this in the movie theaters. I'll lose it
I just used this to teach my 3 sons why we always check on our elders during bad weather. We care as we've been cared for. This is our alabanza.
Me thinking: if the movie doesn’t make me cry at this song it’s not worth watching
Why do I love “Alabanza” so much? It’s so depressing, yet so beautiful.
anyone gonna say anything about how the tune to which they sing "alabanza" is incredibly similar to rent's "goodbye love"
why LIN , WHY WOULD DO US LIKE THAT , SHE WAS SO SWEET *sods*
It’s a terrible day for rain
Someone on tumblr said if you want to cry put on this song..
Never thought I'll come here to cry because this song will work with my own life
Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't speak any Spanish and I may be understanding what little I know wrong, but last Sunday at my church we had a bilingual service and señor seemed to be the word for God. Is this supposed to be the same context? Basically a prayer for Claudia?
I love Lin-Manuela and Mandy Gonzalez.
STAY ALIVE (REPRISE)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait for the movie next year
Me: I've finally been able to get through all of Hamilton Act 2 without crying, In The Heights should be pretty easy.
Atención + Alabanza : I'm about to end this man's whole career.
Thank goodness for abuelita don't living in Brazil
Madre mía que emoción chavales
I know that this is unrelated to the musical but I came here after Cameron Boyce's death and when Lin Manuel Miranda sang the line "she was just here" i thought of how cameron was literally just here. you can really connect with this song if you have lost someone, either a person you looked up to or saw on TV like Cameron, family member/friend, even someone you didn't know well.
Listening to this after hearing about Cameron Boyce's death....
Rip Cam
Alabanza a don Cameron, señor... 😢
I just saw a place perform this musical and this is the only song that I cried at
Well, I just woke up but now I'm ugly crying
This song is sadder and better executed than it’s quiet uptown don’t @ me
The way Lin’s voice breaks on the first “she was just here” breaks my heart every time
Lin love you to death man but this song breks my heart. Along with burn, it's quiet uptown, that would be enough and who lives who dies who tells your story. Most of all stay alive reprise
I just started crying. This is beautiful and so well written.
im sobbing
I’m not crying what haha
People always say that Lin isn’t a great singer in Hamilton, and out of the whole cast he is definitely the least talented, but his big thing that I only noticed after watching+listening to ITH is putting emotions into his voice. You can hear his anger and sadness even though he’s singing. I personally this shows a lot more in the show than in Hamilton, but yeah. That’s it.
Wait, people say that Miranda is the least talented? After 7 years of hard work on that soundtrack too. If anything I would give that title to Oke or Ramos mostly for Act 2 though since Philip and Madison are forgettable characters to me (the former of which I understand is a crime against Hamilfans).
Umm... no one says that? I mean, if they say that about his voice I kind of understand, but a) he can rap the best out of both casts (I understand Daveed Diggs raps the fastest but his flow is just not the same)
B) His emotion IS incredible in BOTH shows
Hold Up.
Does this just use a slower version of the chords from Paciencia Y Fey
*sobbing intensifies*
When he starts to talk about how Claudia cherished the little things, I get choked up.
"When she was here, the path was clear, and she was just here"
You see, this broke me. I started full on SOBBING when I heard this line, it hits extremely close to home. A few months ago we lost a really close family friend, and we had just seen him the week before, so the shock was so overwhelming for me and my parents, so that line really kills me
Omg nuuuuuuuu
This song is so good! I need to meet Lin nooowww! He is my hero and he is a great singer and rapper and song writer!
SAMe. 🙏❤
-K ɑ Ե ҽ Ӏ վ n- would you cut off your left arm and give up all your electronics like I would
We’re doing this for the annual musical in my high school Chorus class, we haven’t started on this song yet I know everyon’s gonna be in tears, even the ones who have seen the musical before
Meanwhile my chorus is doing Dear Evan Hansen, the underclassmen get to sing You Will Be Found to the seniors (by popular vote) and Musical Theater did Waving Through a Window week ago.
Lin’s voice is so full of emotion, everyone’s is.
At least she is with her Mama in heaven.
Hahahahahhhhh
*What's that cracking noise coming from my heart?--*
I-I didn't need this ;.;
Thanks I didn't my heart anyways
this song gives me chills every. single. time.
#ALABANZA
the last alabanza where everyone is singing is so intense and full and the cutoff is so perfect and sudden that it makes you hold your breath. what a powerful moment. sometimes silence is the loudest sound.
I just went to the musical a few hours ago with my acting class. This scene was highly emotional. But god the more emotion the better.
HIS VOICE CRACKS AT THE END AND I JAUT WANT TO CURL UP IN THE FETAL POSITION AND DIEEEEEEEEE
*HEEUUUAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHHHYYYYYYYYY*
Más allá del Sol
Más allá del Sol
Yo tengo un hogar
Hogar, Bello hogar
Más allá del Sol
So i decide to finish listening to in the heights on the bus. I thought it was a good idea. I was almost at school, 30 seconds in and im in tears
Of course everything lin makes has to try and make you cry of course it does.....
Tegan Oxley every thing
I adore this song
This song is like It’s Quiet Uptown, I burst into tears every time I listen to either one.
Leah Brouda As much as I love Hamilton its definitely my favorite, this song just has more of an impact, its quiet uptown makes me really sad, but not sad on the verge on the verge of tears sad ykniw this song makes me almost cry
Lol try you gotta die sometime from Falsettos
I remember doing this show for drama, and me and my friends were terrible people because for some reason every time we did this song we would laugh.
Everyone cope with sadness in different ways.
so underrated...
when i saw this in performance everyone around me was in tears it was beautiful
I watched _In the Heights_ about two months ago, a few weeks after my Tía Tolina died. Even though she was my great aunt, she was like a great-grandmother to me, because she raised my grandma and helped raise my aunts, uncles, and mother. She was such a beautiful soul, filled with love for God and the people around her. In her last months, she never wanted to take her medicine, and one day, she died. They said she died alone, but I know that God was with her and she went in peace. The actress who played Abuela Claudia looked just like my tía in costume and makeup, and when her character died, I cried, because I thought of my Tía Tolina. But now she's with God, singing her alabanzas with the angels and watching over us.
Alabanza.
Alabanza
P.S.: Sorry for your loss 😢

“When she was here the path was clear... And she was just here.” That line gets to me. I love how you can hear Miranda choking up as he recites it. It’s so Human.
This is the "It's Quiet Uptown" of "In the Heights"
@Nicole Hicks Not to me. You can make a comparison without having to say the one that existed first before the other since you're just saying they're similar
@And I- oop Except that they don't act independently of one another. This song may have influenced, IQU, but of course IQU did not affect this. If they were two totally unrelated songs, then perhaps your premise would stand, but as they are connected, your logic fails.
@Nicole Hicks No, it still doesn't make a difference to me in that phrasing. No matter which they said first it doesn't mean they were saying the one that came first influenced the other and implied the wrong one came first, they're probably just more familiar with it so they said it first, doesn't actually change the meaning imo
@And I- oop Ok. Enjoy being wrong.
@Nicole Hicks Ok. Enjoy being unnecessarily rude.
This is my fave out of all of them
I've listened to this song like 7 times in the past half hour I think I'm obsessed help
i'm there with you bro it's just so emotional
